One that comes to mind requires 8 weeks in a splint. I was opening a jar of home made plum jam and instead of using a proper opener I used a table knife, broke the jar, cut the back of my hand just above the knuckle and also cut the tendon.
The cut was really not a huge deal, 5 or 6 stitches, but that splint was a royal pain. It was spring and I was trying to plant and carden with one hand, I baby sat for several days with #1 grandson and changing a diaper with one finger in a splint wasn't fun....nor was washing my hair with my hand in a plastic bag...
Thank Heaven it wasn't my "naughty finger!"

Aside from countless minor incidents - cut fingers, splash or steam burns etc - the only serious thing I've ever done was to set the kitchen on fire which resulted in injury for someone else, not me!

It went the way of most kitchen fires - the pot of oil left to heat up, and being forgotten. It burst into flame, and my then-partner grabbed the pan and hurried with it, still flaming ceiling-high, to tip it all outside. As he threw it, the oil and flame splashed back on him, and he was quite seriously burned, especially on the legs. Took months to heal.

The kitchen had to be repaired and repainted etc (luckily I had insurance), and I've been paranoid about cooking with oil ever since.

At the time I had the guilts quite severely, but in the end it turned out to be a sort of pre-punishment for things that guy did to me later! I ended up losing my house completely due to him a couple of years later, and he also deliberately destroyed my car (not insured), and inflicted serious injury on myself and my son and took legal proceedings against him. Maybe it was his punishment to me for 'burning him', who knows? He ended up in prison for fraud and other offences eventually, so I guess we're even.

My most serious kitchen incident happened when I was temping as a "lunch lady" about 10 years ago. I was slicing cheese in an automatic slicer when someone came in and startled me. My hand slipped and I cut the tip off my thumb. That resulted in my first (and so far only) trip to the hospital in my adult life.

The most recent was stabbing myself in the fleshy part of my hand between the thumb and index finger while trying to cut the skin off a stubborn salami. That was entirely due to my own stupidity in not following one of the basic kitchen rules and not cutting away from myself. If the knife had landed almost anywhere else on my hand it would have touched bone, it went in that deep.

The funniest (afterwards) was the exploding potato incident. I was making caramelised potatoes to serve with pork roast and used canned potatoes. They turned out to have water in the center, which expanded when they heated up, and the potatoes exploded. As we all know, oil and water don't mix, and oil is part of the caramel glaze. The explosions were made worse with the water getting in the hot oil and I was showered with little bits of potato and burning hot caramelised sugar. Ended up with a bunch of small but very painful second and possibly third degree sugar burns on my face and hands. Also ruined my best pair of jeans. Naturally, I have not used canned potatoes since.

Several times. The first time I had prepared my breakfast on my smooth ceramic top stove, then I went to the ladies room. When I came back, I saw that my perfectly beautiful, clean new stove top had crumbs on it. I swiped the crumbs off with my palm, forgetting it was still hot. That one got me second degree burns on my right palm, and some pretty strong pain drugs.
Then last summer as I was taking the very tight, very stubborn lid of my pressure canner, I got steam burns. These were so bad that the skin on my two fingers actually slipped down my finger.
Needless to say, I am pretty careful now. Too many bad owies for me from heat.

I am one that it isn't a holiday baking season if I don't forget that pans just out of the oven are hot. I always seem to grab at least one. And me and knives are a fight too. It is so bad my 4 year old loves to help in the kitchen and she is always saying, "Mama don't cut yourself" or "Mama don't burn your self". She is like my little guardian angel reminding me to be careful LOL>

Other than the minor burns removing pans from the oven, I have to say I have had no serious injuries. Perhaps because I am slow and methodical in the kitchen ? I am always amazed how the chefs on TV chop veggies ... :)

Once as a teenager when none of my folks were home and my girlfriend and I decided we wanted to cut a watermelon. I removed a large knife from the drawer that my DM called a butcher knife. I sliced into the melon and drew the blade down right into my other palm. It left a scar about an inch long which I can still see. Yes, it needed stitches.

Then again about 25 years ago. At that time I wore some ballerina type slippers that ladies used for square dancing at the time. They had elastic all the way around the top so they fit very snug. I had fried something in the kitchen and needed to pour the grease from the pan. I grabbed the first available container which was a Mason Jar and poured the hot grease into it. The jar bottom promptly broke out, the grease pooled on top of my foot and it was the emergency room for me.

Since that time I've tried to be more careful in the kitchen and have only had minor scrapes and cuts that I can remember.

Bobby! ROTFL! Sorry to laugh at your pain. You can't make stuff like that up! As I have admitted before, I'm rather clumsy. I've gotten any # of burns and cuts (but no place unusual). I did give myself an electric shock putting away the dishes once. I was putting away a pot lid underneath the kitchen sink, which knocked into the junction box. Some wires in the junction box were not insulated. The pot lid knocking into it caused a spark which arked (sp?)across the pot lid and threw me back against the refrigerator across the kitchen. Scared the He!! out of me, but I wasn't injured. We called our friendly carpenter friend who came right out and fixed the problem and told us the wires weren't insulated!

One thanksgiving I was making the dinner for DH's family. DH came into the kitchen to make an instant coffee. I stepped back and tripped over him, falling and hitting the back of my head pretty hard on the counter on the way down and burning myself with the hot cup of liquid I had in my hands. He had knelt down (one leg stretched out behind him) to watch the level of water he was using. I knew he was back there, but never would have guessed he would have his leg stretched across the entire room!

I have also spilled hot liquid taken from the microwave on my feet. Thank goodness I couldn't feel them!

The funniest I think so far (and it wasn't a real injury meaning it required no treatment and left no scar) and I do it every once in a while - meaning I haven't learned my lesson yet.

I take something out of the oven with the mitts, then take the mitts off and tuck them under my arm for a moment. SCORCHED ARMPITS.

What a funny question to ask! I just broke my little toe 2 days ago. I would like to tell you that the kitchen counter jumped in front of me. But would you buy it?

You are right Boo... you can't make that stuff up. After I hit submit I was wondering if anyone would question the authenticity of my post. I'm still hurting "down there" as I sit down to breakfast. I can't take a picture of that area! I am glad to hear some other stories, though they sound painful. I guess the only reason it pays to be a klutz in the kitchen is for the stories that can be told. Also, maybe we learn lessons from smaller experiences that prevent more serious ones!

I will use the excuse of "oldtimers", because I forgot about a childhood accident. I had to light the pilot in mom's stove, I turned on the gas and then went to look for a match :( Singed eyebrows and hairline .. I was lucky the matches were close and it wasn't worse !

I put the potholder on my right hand and pulled the casserole out of the oven with my left hand. I blame the before dinner drink on an empty stomach for that one.

Lots of minor burns from touching hot pans out of the oven. One hot oil splatter burn on my wrist. One hot butternut squash soup splatter burn on my forearm.

One scrape of the thumb knuckle on a box grater.

2 weeks ago I felt something stuck to the bottom of my left bare foot. I absent-mindedly tried to rub it off on top of my right foot. I look down and there's blood oozing out of my right foot.

The thing stuck to my left foot was still there - I looked and it was a tiny piece of blue glass. I had scraped it across the top of the other foot.

Later found the culprit - a blue glass with a chip on the bottom.

My MIL used to go barefoot in the house long ago until once - we were at her home and she had a small party. One gal dropped a wine glass on the tile floor - shattering it. A few days later, MIL stepped on a piece of the glass and had to go to a podiatrist for a few treatments. Now she always wears her sneakers in the house.

Think I'll start doing the same. (An excuse to order more house mocs from Lands End, bwa-ha!)

Hmmmm, nope, never really hurt myself in the kitchen, other than the usual burns and sliced fingers. Now the dining room - there's another story. Put my right hand through the (closed) patio door and severed the reflexor tendons in all 4 fingers.

IÂve had two rather unceremonious injuries in the kitchen. I have a ceramic cook top in my kitchen and tend to forget that it stays hot forever after cooking. As a prelude to my first injury story let me say:
1. IÂm tad bit height challenged.
2. My "chest muscles" arenÂt as perky as they used to be so things tend to point south.
3. I donÂt wear a bra when IÂm at home and some times I donÂt even wear a shirt.
4. The controls for my stove burners are at the back of the stove.
So guess which part of my anatomy I burned?

Second injury:
1. IÂm clumsy.
2. I lived 20 miles from the nearest hospital and ambulance service is based about the same distance from my home.
3. I was home alone with my daughter who was 8 years old at the time.
I was trying to separate a pair of vacuum sealed precooked chicken breast packages using an Exacto knife. I slipped and the knife imbedded itself to the hilt in the inside of my Left wrist just below the palm of my hand. I stood there contemplating if I had cut anything vital. I didnÂt dare move for fear the knife would move and cause additional damage. I also wasnÂt too keen on the idea of removing the knife for fear of something vital spurting all over my kitchen. So I calmly called to my daughter to get a towel and a belt. When she brought me the items I handed her the phone and said "If I pass out call 911." I pulled the knife from my wrist. There was plenty of blood BUT it wasnÂt spurting so I wrapped my wrist tightly in the towel, secured it with the belt, grabbed my daughter, jumped in the car and headed for the ER figuring IÂd at least cut the distance the ambulance had to travel if I didnÂt make it all the way to the hospital. Holding my arm elevated out the window of the car, I had my daughter dial my husband on my cell phone. While she held the phone to my ear, I told my husband what had transpired and that I was headed for the hospital. As we drove, my daughter kept talking to my husband with the thought that if I did need an ambulance he could assist with locating me. IÂm proud to say I made it to the ER though a tad light headed. Luckily the knife deftly missed all critical parts of the wristÂs anatomy. Yes it was only a deep "flesh wound". After several stitches, my daughter and I met the rest of the family at a local restaurant for dinner. Traumatized by the event, my children confiscated my Exacto knife set! Ten years later IÂm still the butt of their humor every time I pick up anything remotely sharp.

Hey but at least I've never burned my butt.....well at least not yet! :-)

Other than trying to burn everything in the kitchen two episodes come to mind... When I was 17 I worked in a small cheap hamburger place... The owner was so cheap that instead of buying a French fry fryer we used a big pot with a basket... The apartment sized stove was in the back room right next to the door... I had just bought a long sleeved uniform with French cuffs... When the cops came in for coffee they would sit in the back room... As I reached over the stove to open the door.... Yep, my sleeve caught the handle of the fryer and as the pot was heading for the floor I reached out to grab it... My left hand was one gigantic blister by the time I got to the doctor... ( I couldn't leave the restaurant until the boss came back and ended up paying for the doctor myself... Lost the job because I couldn't work. )... Now for the gross part... The doctor bandaged the hand to prevent infection... On my second visit the bandage had dried out and stuck to all four fingers, the nurse was in a hurry.... Ripped it right off...

My second 'accident' happened about 25 years ago, when I still worked, and was everyone's fault but mine... My neighbor ALWAYS left his garage lights on, the lights were so bright they would light up my entire kitchen, the night in question he had them off... Hubby didn't have anything better to do than complain because the dinner dishes and pots were still in the sink... I told him I'd do them later... He took it upon himself to do them... The pervious days dishes were still in the washer.... Hubby couldn't be bothered putting away the clean dishes... As he rinsed off the dirty dishes he put them in the washer, on top of the clean dishes... As everyone knows when you have a lot of pots and pans you can't fit two days worth into a regular washer... He piled all the dirty dishes and pots on top of the clean ones, on the bottom shelf, and couldn't close the door... He prompt shut off the light and went to watch TV... Yep, I walked into a dark kitchen, tripped and landed on the dish washer door and my arm landed on the upturned knifes... 21 stitches.

OMG, more accidents than I wish to admit. Cuts, burns, glass shards, fires, more burns, pot holders that were burned or with holes and no knowledge of that, forgetting potholders altogether, slicing fingers with knifes, knuckles with the mandolin (never mind taking the minute to get the guard), but my worst....

Years ago I had just moved into an apartment with my then one year old son. Between the moving and unpacking boxes, I decided to pop a frozen pizza into the oven. Preheated the oven (much longer than necessary), went about my business emptying more boxes. I open the oven door to place the pizza in and realize I was supposed to light the pilot, so what do you think I did? The "blast" threw me across the floor into the back wall, ignited much of the tissue paper in some of the boxes along the wall, singed my eyebrows, eyelashes and any nose hair i might have had and left me temporarily blind. My shirt was also on fire adn there was some type of film that developed over my eyeballs.

All I could hear at that time was my baby screaming and crying and I could not even see him to know if the fire or blast had affected him. I could only follow by sound and do the "stop, drop and roll".

My downstairs neighbor came running up, called my SIL and she came running (and I mean running) 20 plus blocks since her husband had the car, to rescue me. I spent a few days in the hospital and it took a good week for my sight to come back and I had to draw on eyebrows for quite some time.

I could never get my kid to go back into that place, he would tense up/freeze when we approached it, so I moved out just as quickly as I moved in.

We stayed with my SIL/BIL for a few days and the first thing my one nephew asked was "why would you light a match with all that gas build up". Geeze, wish I had even given that a thought!

Needless to say, to this day, I have never, ever lit another pilot light and I think I can safely get through life without having to ever do it again, on any type of appliance.

I was canning once I was blanching sweet corn ,spilled a bag of boiling water down over my thighs.Oh my I never undressed so fast since.

It's burns for me too. I think the 2 that I remember the most were the worse. I was blackening fish on our new grill. That sucker could get up to 700 degrees. I put a cast iron skillet on and blackened the fish to perfection. I had oven mitts on to remove the fish from the pan, but came back to remove the pan without the mitts! I grabbed the handle, it hurt so much I couldn't scream and didn't want my guest to see what a real clutz I was. In my defense I think wine was involved! I spent the night with my hand in ice every chance I could with no one knowing!
And the last time was just a few weeks ago. I was helping my DS with a wedding. And I was removing a restaurant pan from a commerical oven. What I had put in the oven was about to burn, but I couldn't find any oven mitts. James told me just grab a towel. So sure enough I grabbed a towel and the pan, the towel fell in the oven. Again, not wanting to be more trouble, I bit my lip and went on all night with a blister the size of a golf ball. At one point right after it happened, I said to James why don't you have oven mitts, everybody in the kitchen thought that was hysterical, I failed to see the humor. It wsn't until the next week that my DH told him about my burn. He felt really bad, but then looked at his arms and hands and realized where her gets "it" from!!!!!

I've read that b4 and always heeded it...lol. Additionally I always try and remember to put on my glasses when frying it too. Sometimes it really pops a lot and far.

My worst kitchen tragedy was once when I was bending and twisting to put a large bowl in the fridge. My back went out, and once I got the bowl on the shelf and the door closed, I lay down on the floor in excruciating pain. BF offered to get help and move me to the couch. I resisted, and he ended up calling the ambulance and I ended up in the emergency getting some help for the pain.
I had a lot of bad lower back pain for years, other emergency room visits, and a lot of physical therapy b4 finally getting back surgery and getting it fixed.

To this day I do not bend 'and' twist, am very careful of my back, and preach to others when I see them abusing their backs.

Take care of your back...it's the only one you will ever have.

My kitchen accident sure pales in comparison to so many above.

Wow. I must be very careful in the kitchen, I've few injuries and none of them severe. I have been known to grab a pan from the oven in a hurry with no mitt or use a wet one. Ouch, but nothing that ever even blistered. Steam burns and sliced off finger nails are pretty much my worst injuries. My most recent injury was incurred trying to use tongs to remove canning jars from the boiling water. The tongs pinched my finger nail in half in my efforts. And the hot water splashed back up. Double whammy.

I've cut myself badly on the mandolin so many times, that DH has threatened to throw it out.

I love the thing so much because it really helps speed up prep time. But I seriously believed it has developed a taste for blood.

Yup....this last Spring and of course RUSHING!!! Cut the whole top of my left thumb off with a big knife while making ceasar salad...Ambulance and all right to the hospital..it took 6 months for the numbness to go away...I learned a hard lesson because 2 of my 4 little ones were home and they got scared half to death I of course tried not to panic but when I looked I got really queezy!

I turned my gas oven on to pre-heat the broiler and left a cotton pot holder near the steam vent. It caught on fire, but I grabbed it and trew it in the sink, where (luckily) there was a lot of dirty dishes soaking in water. I wasn't hurt, but badly shaken.

Earthlydelights, your story was just terrifying. Thank God you & your son were OK.

Moosemac, I love you! I have been very, very lucky and have never had any serious kitchen incidents but I did have a close call with the griddle on my new, gas stove, paired with me making french toast first thing in the AM while wearing my jammies & no bra. As I leaned forward to put the slices at the back of the (24" deep) griddle I realized that this could possibly end very, very badly. I vowed never to cook without first having coffee (and a bra).

My first actual accident was due to the fact that every single knife in my mother's house was dull to the point that the handles would probably cut better than the blades themselves. So here I am married, with my nice new knives and I learned right away why you should never cut down towards your finger. Did you know that knives with actual sharp edges don't just bounce right off skin?

The mandoline with the taste for blood...love it!

Worst was cutting my finger while trimming meat off a steak that had been cajun seasoned.

Yes, and I tend to have "unique" accidents because that's me!

I slipped on a wet spot on the kitchen floor once and fell through the glass part of a storm door, requiring several stitches in my arm and I still have a good scar.

I broke my big toe dropping a 5 pound roll of frozen hamburger onto it.

I've grated the ends of my fingers and my knuckles, cut myself on broken canning jars in sinks of soapy watter, burned my tongue from tasting hot chili, I regularly touch the hot oven grate when I'm removing something from the oven and just last night I grabbed a hot baking sheet that was sitting on top of the stove. I have a nice blister on the palm of my left hand right now.

And, every year I burn my arm in the same place when I can tomatoes, from lifting the lid on the canner. Every blasted year. Sigh.

And that's why the only houseplant I have is an aloe. It lives in the kitchen!

Good Grief! I'm not sure I'd ever return to the kitchen after some of these injuries! I guess hunger is a powerful motivator!
My injuries were much more routine, a couple of cuts that required stitches, box grater injuries that made me a convert to the microplane and lots and lots of burns, only one that was serious. I have the scars to prove them, but gratefully I'm not one of the real walking wounded!

I've had the usual little cuts and burns, but the worst was about two or three years ago when I grabbed the handle of a skillet that had just been removed from a 400 degree oven. I had to sleep on the sofa on my tummy with my hand in a pan of water and a bag of ice in the water. Needless to say, I always, ALWAYS, put a hot pad on skillet handles until they have cooled.

Bumping this up so the High school kids can find it!!!
