Painting my bathroom

HI! I'm new to the site and have a question. I recently remodeled my bathroom and now need a new color to paint the walls. The first color, which is a sage green, does not work well with the shower/tub tile. The tile is rialto beige from Lowe's and it has a pinkish/peachy tint. Not really what I was hoping for. The floor is a neutral dark brown, the cabinets are dark cherry and the top is a light granite. I was wanting a dark brown for the walls but not sure if that would work. Any suggestions on how to tone down the pink/peach in the tile? I have only three strands of hair left trying to make this decision.

You're not willing to embrace the pink/peach? There's usually a bit of that in light granite, and it's flattering to the skin.

Perhaps a pale, warm gold?

I would offset the pinkness with taupe brown shower curtains, then do the walls a palladian blue which is so mesmerizing that no one will notice the blush in the tan tile. You could even use a darker towel in the browns too. On a wall opposite the tile put an artwork which has beautiful colors. The human eye will go directly to color before it looks at anything else in the room so don't put anything colorful near the tile but pop it around the rest of the room.

The best way to deal with humidity in the bathroom is to install an exhaust fan. But on to your question -- you are re-painting walls that are already painted, is that right? I don't think plaster walls require anything special -- I use Kilz primer followed by semi-gloss paint. If semi-gloss is too much for you, a satin or pearl finish should be fine. There are also additives you can add to the paint to avoid mildew (ask at paint store). My dad does that since he refuses to use anything except flat finish paint. I go with semi-gloss and no additive needed since it is very scrubbable. If there are mildew spots now, I would spot treat with bleach first. If not, you should not even need primer unless you need it to hide the old color. Plaster is actually superior to drywall IMHO in dealing with moisture. It won't grow mold like drywall. Good luck!

The black stuff flaking off is usually mildew and the finish coming off the frame. You can use Zinsser PermaWhite Kitchen and Bath paint for your bathroom. It is only available in light pastel colors, but is resistant to mildew. It covers well and comes in Eggshell, Satin, and Semi-gloss finishes. I would use the Satin because it has enough sheen and is scrubable. The peeling paint needs to be removed and I would thoroughly clean the surfaces to be painted. You should prime the bathroom with a good primer. I would use 123 to give a good solid surface for the paint to adhere. You can also use Zinsser Peel Stop once you have removed as much of the peeling paint. It will bond to peeling paint. The reason you have peeling paint is usually due to the moisture in the bathroom. If the bathroom is not vented properly, the moisture will cause the paint to soften and peel.

That's really similar to the Cognac cabinets we recently installed in our bathroom. They look nice. We originally used SW Sea Salt but recently darkened it with the next shade on the strip, Comfort Gray. I love the way it looks with the cabinets and stone in the space. Here's a couple of pics. It's a greenish gray but looks blue gray in some lighting. Very spa like.

I am about to turn this into a game of "it looks like to me!" It looks like your tiles have a green cast to me. I would take one of the turquoise-ish colors off the shower curtain (if you are keeping it) and get a lighter version of that color for your walls. Look at Sea Salt by Benjamin Moore.. A brighter color is going to brighten the room.

I second Palladian Blue for the walls. Your tile, cherry cabeinet and Palladian Blue.

I like the idea of peach to compliment all of those colors. As pretty of a color as green-blue/blue-green is, everyone is painting their bathroom in these tones. The quickest way to date a room is to follow the trend, so if it were me, I wouldn't paint the room blue-green.
