Is your granite full of pits?

Three of our granite countertops (uba tuba) just got installed. Two of them are 3' X 2' and have a few pits that I deem acceptable. The third is for our hutch/phone station (where we will be writing). It is 1' X 6' and has several fairly deep/wide pits throughout. There are about 6 of them alone in a 3" square area. The sawdust from the installation keeps getting caught in them and it is difficult to remove completely. Our contractor told us this is "normal" and perhaps they can epoxy them to make the counter smooth. Just wanted to hear what others have experienced.

My granite does have pits, but I would expect that with an exotic granite like mine. Uba Tuba should not have that many pits. Some pits are normal, but they should not be so bad that sawdust hangs up in them!! The installer should fill them for you.

Granite, Marble, Limestone, Slate - et all - have pits.
This is a natural quality that happens in stone - this is
why it is refered to as "Natural Stone".....

The best advice I can give anyone working with any natural
stone - is to look at it really well - BEFORE - you approve
it for use in your home. The time to decide if a stone has too
many pitts in it - is BEFORE the slab gets cut... (of
course this is not helping Aflowerfreak...)

Pitting happens - even in Uba Tuba!

We had some pitting on the edges - we have a 1/4" round edge - not sure of the right name. The fabricator fixed them well enough with epoxy. I thought it would drive me nuts but I really don't notice it any more. We're pretty careful about not putting hot stuff direct on the granite but other than that we really use it. We bake a lot of bread, kneading direct on the counter, and my family is not to good about cleaning up after themselves and no, we don't have any pitting. You can cut on granite but you will KILL the edge on your knives. Using a cutting board will protect the blade way more than the counter, LOL. I love my granite.

From what I can tell, full tile backsplashes in kitchens are a fairly recent trend (with some exceptions -- see the 1928 bungalow thread -- though that was more a tiled room than a backsplash per se). When your corners aren't quite square, it makes countertop installation easier if there is a 1" thick backsplash to cover any gap between the countertop and wall. That said, I agree with the pp's that the short backsplash currently looks a bit dated. That might change in time. After all, I don't know anyone in real life who has put in a new kitchen with no backsplash at all, but I have seen some beautiful no-backsplash kitchens on this forum... maybe that will be the next trend. [grin] I haven't decided about the backsplash for when/if we redo our kitchen. We are old enough and have been in our house long enough to take the long view, so probably we will do something that's either relatively timeless (i.e. white tile) or easily changed.

We also have a wine cellar Crystal so I tend to stand and look at the view and drink wine :oP That's the cartoon version of our view, but if you look at the pic with the stove, on the right is the side of that window and you can see it's pretty much the same view. We're about three stories up above the lake, but the house is right on the lake (it's a five level townhouse). We have that view from two sides of the place. That view is really how I got myself into this remodel mess LOL The place was a vintage cheap 1980's townhouse...and I'm turning it into something else I hope..just because of that stupid view we HAD to have! So this thread now comes into play as we continue...I'm thinking of doing a full marble backsplash in the bathroom after seeing a couple of them here. Some of the lovely curved transitions from short backsplash to high are pretty fabulous.

My ubatuba has very few pits in it and not so deep that stuff gets caught in them. That third slab for your hutch/phone station doesn't sound right to me, but obviously azstoneconsulting/Kevin knows a lot more than I do.

I have a few small pits in my ubatuba, but nothing that would cause it to fill up with gunk. I would think having them filled would solve the problem nicely.

Another thing to add to the "Stone Advice" thread...examine your slabs for pits!

We have 3 slabs of AB Premium (name the granite yard used) and I haven't noticed any pits. If any granite/marble/etc. can have pits, then I guess we got lucky...one of the few bullets we managed to dodge!

You are so right!!!
I would add this - IF a person is concerned about pitting -
(Baltic Brown - I'm looking in your general direction)
You should not only examine the slab while it is on the
vertical "A" frame or pole rack, but ask to see a suitable
specimen of the same stone layed FLAT - ie HORIZONTAL...
THIS is how you will lok at your stone when it gets to your
home - so look at an example of the same stone in varying (sp?)
types of light sources too.

I always say -

IF a customer KNOWS what they are geting -
They WON'T be SHOCKED when it gets to their HOMES!!!

Remember -
Many Fabricators (me included) hold by the philosophy
that the time to reject a slab is BEFORE it gets
put on the bridge saw (or in our case - the water jet)...

Once it gets CUT - it's yours - so MAKE SURE you KNOW
what you are GETTING - pits or no pits...
