Installing Range Hood and Stainless Steel Backsplash

Will be installing the range hood this weekend but I have a couple of questions if someone could answer them. I purchased the spagna vetro 30" SS hood but I was wondering what the distance should be between the bottom of the hood and the top of my freestanding range. I've read that the bottom of the hood should be 60" from the floor. Also should the stainless steel backsplash be installed first and then the range hood?

The spagna manual states 28-31" above the stove top.

How big is your stainless back splash, and where did you source it from?

Range hoods have to be functional, and what contributes to that are:
- how powerful your range is and how you cook, so simmering is one thing, searing steaks produces a lot more that needs to be taken out
- how powerful the fan is
- how big the collection area is of the hood - where rising smoke/steam can be caught before the fan pulls it out. This is based on depth (top to bottom) and width and depth - if the hood is not over your front burners, then you'll have a problem. Your hood doesn't have much in the way of a collection area.
- how close the hood is to the cooktop, the closer it is the better it will work

Based on my experience, I'd strongly suggest installing the hood without the backsplash so that you can adjust the distance from the cooktop based on trying it out. We ended up dropping ours an inch and a half from the first place we put it. Once you're happy, do a more permanent install.

It really depends on the particular brand of range. On some ranges, the island trim serves as the oven vent and on some brands you can replace the island trim with a higher riser that also serves as the vent. You need to check with Viking about your particular range.

I can't figure out how to copy and paste on the iPad, it just takes me back to this thread so I can't see exactly which pattern. But anyway, there is probably a prefabricated tile you can use. You can probably find them for less somewhere, but these are pretty reasonable when you consider how long it will take to cut all those tiles and smooth the edges. you could maybe get a fabricator to install the SS backsplash and to attach a shelf? A number of folks here have gotten their backsplashes fabricated for a very reasonable amounts out of SS. This way, I would imagine, you would be able to do the wood mantle with vent inserts. BTW, in my experience, the SS hood with the shelf was a lot cheaper than getting a wooden mantle for the hood and then buying the insert. And I did not have very expensive cabinet line either (Decora cherry, not cheap by any means, but it's no Woodmode or Crystal). So you may want to shop around. cheers, Yana

Is this normal to have caulking right at the top? Keeps grease from accumulating back in a difficult to clean recess. Hopefully the caulk extends the full depth of the joint (or the two pieces of metal are otherwise isolated from one another) so vibration from the range hood doesn't cause a rattling noise. Find out exactly what caulk was used. (To determine if it is a paintable caulk; silicone caulk, as a rule, is not paintable.) Looks to me like white silicone caulk was used. Maybe there is some good way to remove it without risking marring the stainless but I don't know what it is. IOW's this is most probably a learn to live with it situation. Good news is that in a couple of weeks you probably won't even notice it anymore. FWIW, I don't think it looks bad but a gray caulk would probably have been a better choice.
