Granite edge around undermount sink?

After months of second guessing, I have finally chosen my granite (honed absolute black) but there is one more decision I have to make. I have chosen the half bullnose edge treatment. Should I have this around the sink as well? The granite fabricator's showroom has the half bullnose on the display and I love the look and feel. It seems "softer" to me.

I have looked all through the FKB and it seems that most people have a more standard edge around the sink. Is there a reason that more people don't use a different edge around the sink?

Normally a flat polished edge (like weissman's pic) is used for an undermount sink. Make sure the top edge is "eased" so it isn't sharp and more susceptible to chipping.

You will have pots and dishes hitting the edge so you do not want an edge that is too fragile.

Well, congrats on making that big decision!

I don't know anyone who has a shaped edge around the sink, so can't comment on that. I'm including a pic of our plain edge with a full bullnose, so you can see that there's not a lot of room around the sink edge for faucet, soap dispenser, backsplash etc. If you go with a fancier edge would that take up valuable real estate, let alone, I'm not sure if it would make it more or less prone to nicks at the edge.(I wish my reveal were a little more negative, but am OK with it).

It's normal to have a plain edge around the sink. I've never seen it done any other way.

The day before yesterday I was at the home of an admitted OCD customer who had called me to shine dulled granite. I took one look and refused; there was nothing wrong that a razor blade scraping soap scum couldn't cure in half a minute. You don't start trying to match factory gloss without a very good reason. His 1/8" "pencil" sink edge profile had the inevitable chips. Remember, this is a retired couple with a 6-year-old top, no crazy teenagers here. I explained that removing them would very slightly alter the consistency of the profile and he was good with that. It took about 10 minutes. I made a previous polyester deck repair look and feel much better for another 10 minutes or so. He was very pleased, despite my less-than-$300.00 minimum fee. I cannot overemphasize. You will pay your fabricator a premium for a larger sink edge radius profile, or you will pay me to grind chips out (and look at a slightly distorted profile forever), or you will stare at and feel chips in your edge. First I would like to thank you for the time you have taken to draw up the schematic. As you can see from my first photo there is a white marker line towards the back of the sink. You can see how much of the back flange had to be cut away. Take notice of my faucet how I had to put part of that flange back up there to get my faucet to stand true. Also notice where they put their brackets in reference to where the sink outline is. The brackets are on the inside perimeter of the sink. My biggest concern is the structural integrity of the sink. The manufacturer of the sink will not warranty it so if the sink was to fail I would have to get another sink to fit the same opening and also modify it to fit. Which again will affect the structural integrity of the sink according to the manufacturer. My biggest concern is that there was plenty of room to install the sink without modifications had the hole been correct. There are six brackets holding the sink in place two on each side and two in the back corners nothing in front. We sent to sink & template to the fabricator and still it wasn’t correct.

Can you replace a drop-in sink with an undermount sink (granite)?

Yes, I understand that the edges of the granite would need to be done. But I think that is a relatively minor issue. From what I've googled, it seems that the cutout for a drop-in sink is usually larger than for an undermount sink, so it is/may not be possible to put in an undermount sink if you already have a drop-in sink. I'm trying to figure out if/how I can figure out how big my cutout is in the granite for the drop-in sink without removing the sink. Then I might be able to figure out whether the cutout is too big for my new sink. The other thought I had was if the counter is already in place, how do you get the undermount sink in place? It would have to go through the cabinet, right? My cabinets have a wood piece (?frame) running between the double doors, so I'm pretty sure the sink wouldn't fit in that way. I think I'm answering my own question, but I'm hoping that there is a way that's not too complicated to accomplish this.

Okay, I am on a roll with the questions these past few days. SORRY! So my latest q: I had been planning on undermounting my Shaw sink and having a 1/4" reveal. All the pictures of such sinks really sold me on it. HOWEVER, I hadn't focused on that damn laminate edge that is now torturing me. So now I'm thinking that perhaps I should be doing an upmount? Otherwise will there be an odd location where the lam edge ends but the top layer continues over the sink? Any pictures would be welcome.

We decided to have an ogee edge everywhere when we had our counters put in about 6 years ago, and I have been very happy with that decision. The granite people said they had never had a request for that before, but according to them have had several since. It does of course add to the cost.

Mine has a quarter round like the rest of the edges. I like it better than a regular eased edge. It didn't cost any extra. Most shops just do an eased edge around the sink, though.

My guess would be that the fancier the edge, the harder it is to clean it, and with a bullnose etc it might be difficult to reach underneath the edge to remove mildew. I guess pretty much all except eased edge might have this problem.

Another reason must be cost; because fancier edges are more expensive.
