Can you replace a drop-in sink with an undermount sink (granite)?

Hi,

I am not very knowledgeable about kitchens, and you all seem to be very knowledgeable, so I'm hoping to get some help here!

I am not looking to do a complete kitchen remodel but I would like to update a few things in my kitchen. I currently have granite counters and a drop-in cast iron sink. I would like to replace the sink. I'm considering a Blanco silgranit sink, but I would also like it to be undermounted instead of drop-in.

Is this possible? Is it a huge endeavor? I've googled, and see yes, no, and maybe as the answers, so I'm a little confused. Can I tell on my own whether it's possible, or would I need to call a granite fabricator? I can't tell how big my cutout in the granite it for my sink - is there an easy way to figure that out?

I had a similar post just yesterday. The consensus was that I would have to have the edges of the granite redone.

Yes, I understand that the edges of the granite would need to be done.

But I think that is a relatively minor issue. From what I've googled, it seems that the cutout for a drop-in sink is usually larger than for an undermount sink, so it is/may not be possible to put in an undermount sink if you already have a drop-in sink. I'm trying to figure out if/how I can figure out how big my cutout is in the granite for the drop-in sink without removing the sink. Then I might be able to figure out whether the cutout is too big for my new sink.

The other thought I had was if the counter is already in place, how do you get the undermount sink in place? It would have to go through the cabinet, right? My cabinets have a wood piece (?frame) running between the double doors, so I'm pretty sure the sink wouldn't fit in that way.

I think I'm answering my own question, but I'm hoping that there is a way that's not too complicated to accomplish this.

babyboomer1001: 100% silicone is perfect caulk between a sink flange and the bottom of stone. Polyseamseal and other Latex caulks are not; they do not have the adhesive stickiness or flexibility of silicone. It's best if you can pull your sink, clean the sink flange and stone bottom, recaulk with silicone and reinstall the sink. If this isn't reasonably possible, use a stiff plastic shim or plastic laminate to gouge the caulk out, clean the gap with acetone, and recaulk with silicone. Ignoring a leaking sink flange can have catastrophic consequences if your top has been "rodded" or reinforced with steel. If the fabricator used the wrong rod and/or the wrong bedding the rod can rust and blow up your top. I've fixed about 8 of these so far and it runs around $1,000.00-$1,600.00.

Warning-my brand new double bowl w/ built in drain bd. silgranit sink got a crack that leaks! Best guess is it had a hairline crack and when poured hot pasta water in sink to drain it cracked! Heard a "POP!" They are sending a new sink, but warranty doesnÂt cover installation. They said from now on I should run cold water to mix w/ the hot when draining things. This sink is supposed to take the heat, but 2 people at Blanco said to do this. I would not have bought sink promoted to be so strong if I knew it needed TLC. I've NEVER had to do that w/ ANY sink I've ever owned, and I've lived a LOT of places. And this is the most expensive sink I've ever had! IÂm writing this to share w/ readers, and to find out if anyone else has had this problem.

I think that's just because most people don't use the braces to install. :) (Why, I'm not sure---we decided to do it after my in-laws had a horrible experience getting their old undermount out, and I was surprised to see that our sink actually came with the hardware to do it that way---and yet people mostly don't!) It didn't seem especially difficult (we did it ourselves and just followed the Kohler instructions) so there may be other reasons people don't go that route. I think it's more common for undermount sinks to be epoxied in and rest on the sublayer of the counter, which makes it very difficult to get them out without damaging the counter. I should also add that we don't have all that much going on under our sink (no disposal, wall-mount faucet, etc.) so possibly people either want to maximize the space in the sink cabinet (not that the braces take much space) or just feel that it won't matter because getting the sink out with all the plumbing and such below would be difficult anyway? (We'd need to take out our P-trap to make room to lower our sink, but that's pretty simple to do---could be more complicated if you had a disposal and additional plumbing connected to it.) Kohler does sell the hardware we used separately as the Kohler undermount sink kit---it's designed for their sinks, but it has a pretty simple setup so I imagine it would work fine for many other sinks too.

Yuck! I would confirm with Blanco, but I believe there is no stainless steel sink that exactly matches that cut out. Perhaps either the Blanco One or the Blanco Performa have a bigger cutout then the low divide sink that you currently have. What is your countertop made of? Some can be cut on site. If neither of those works, you may need to go to another manufacturer. I think that one of the Kohler sinks (brookfield?) will fit the cut out-but you have to actually have Kohler send you the template so that you can see if it will fit the cut out. It's very annoying. (And installing a cast-iron sink after the fact is not going to be easy unless you're willing to go with a drop in) I have the Blanco silgranite sink in white and I don't ever get any marks like your pans are making. What kind of pans are they?

open cabinet, take out stuff, crawl in there on your back with a tape measure, straightedge to get a vertical from one edge to measure from and a flashlight, you should be able to see the edges of the granite or at least get a pretty good idea.... it will be almost as much fun as crawling around in attic making sure I could put AC vent where i wanted it but not quite the same with out the fiberglass.
