So many tops - so few pants WHY?

It occurred to me last week: I have about five pairs of pants/jeans. It's is ah hard to find ones that fit and look good that I don't shop for pants until I have to. Tops, on the other hand, are easy. I can look at one on the hangar and tell if it will fit. Which leads to closet clutter! I must have had 100 tops on hangars. Most are solid colors, sometimes 5 or 6 in different shades of the same color.

I decided to fill up one trash bag to donate nth at went very quickly. Now I'm doing a second pass, which is taking longer. My goal is another full bag my Friday.

My larger goal is to never get into this situation again. I won't fall into the trap of buying tops just because its easy.

Now lets talk about shoes. I wear a women's 11. When I was young that was a very hard size to find so I developed the attitude of "here's an 11, I'd better buy it since its so hard to find!" 11 is very common now but I still seem to have that "attitude of lack." I am also filling up a trash bag of shoes to donate so some other size 11 woman can get the thrill of finding her size. My goal - only buy shoes I need, no matter how often I find my size.

Well you have the fact that size 11 shoes are much easier to find than they used to be. However, if after children tyour foot spreads to a 12, well, that's better than it used to be too or I'd be wearing men's athletic shoes and clogs for everything.

Sounds like we have similar clothing and shoe experiences.

I have more tops than bottoms too. My 'uniform' is a colored t-shirt and pair of jeans or shorts, depending on the weather. Having an ample bosom, I get stains on the front that get away from me, and I eventually discard the top.

When one of the crafts stores puts their t-shirts on sale, I usually buy a dozen or so.

I guess that ample bosom keeps the stains from getting on my pants!

I'm afraid I'm one who spends alot of time on Flea Market Gardening...I also do the posting there 2 days a week ...I joined Facebook for my family ...& have enjoyed it immensely since I can stay in contact to easily w/old & new, close-by & far away friends/family. I do check Garden Junk weekly (at the least) but it takes me double the time to post pics on the forum cause of the need to put them in Photobkt or another program first ... w/Facebk they can come right from my computer picture files. But I do love Garden Junk & appreciate all the many ideas & people on the forum ...so I'm trying to post sometimes! The amount of misinformation on gardenweb boards over the years is very annoying to me. So many people talking out of their a--. It is a rare case that someone is authentically, forgivably mistaken. As pineresin is when he states no large S. semprevirens are found outside zn 8 & 9. "z8 is a tad marginal for Coast Redwoods" LMAO! In fact, there are two 90' coast redwoods in zn 7b Williamsburg, VA, and has been since around 1955 when they were planted. I personally saw that tree after 0F in 1994 and it was uninjured. Lightning, hurricanes, and inept college landscaping crews are the greatest threat to those trees now, if 1979 and 1985 could not kill them off. One was seriously damaged by Katrina. Furthermore, one of the best informed horticulturalists in the Washington, DC, area, discovered a large old CR tree in a 7a suburb of DC. He has a Pineresin level knowledge and there is absolutely no chance he was mistaken. I think he said it was around 40' but I could be mistaken. Such a tree would have survived well below 0F as recently as 1994. He tried to get Hines to micropropagate it as a hardy coast redwood but could not get them interested. (he is personal friends with higher-ups at Hines, and has introduced other plants through them) People don't seem to understand/appreciate that in the last several hundred thousand years the Earth's climate has experienced a great deal of variability and that most plants have resistance to conditions well beyond those in their current native ranges. Pictures have been posted of the test Wollemias in DC, after around 7-9F (sorry Pineresin you will have to translate) and some were almost uninjured appearing. That is probably 10F colder than the minimum in the current location where W.n. was found. I grew for many years a Fuchsia regia from the Orgon mountains of Brazil, a 9b roughly like the climate of J'burg, ZA, yet this plant tolerated 0F with ground frozen solid 6 inches deep. Such conditions would not have occurred in its native range for at least several thousand years, probably. Not all plants retained the genes that either purposefully or surreptitiously permit such survival of course.

We have a corner fireplace. At the time we were considering a floor plan, we had one particular book of plans that had many like this. I went back and forth about whether it was better furniture/seating-wise to have the fireplace in the corner or on the flat wall with the TV over it. I also wanted a mantle as opposed to a TV cabinet over the fireplace. A problem we had with our last house was the TV was over the fireplace, center wall, and everyone had to look up to watch TV. We now have a 46" flat screen at eye level, surrounded by bookshelves, a corner fireplace with a mantle and space for a nice painting or something. Very similar floor plan to yours, but I like yours better; we did not think out the layout of the MB thoroughly, yours is much better with the closet as a buffer. I do like our dining room being 'open' to the rest of the main space (we have half-walls and columns). We also have windows in the family room with a nice view, but we probably have things a little too crowded, to the right of the fireplace, making it a little more difficult to select window treatments that won't infringe on the fireplace or interfere with the door to the deck. angemoore - Here's how to add location info: Go to Your Houzz in upper right of every page, click Edit Profile, and on the left side click advanced settings. Well down the advanced settings page is a blank labeled Climate Zone for Garden Forums along with a link to find your zone. If you add info on your state or the nearest large city you will get even better information since zone only relates to average coldest winter temperatures. You can do this by adding it to your Profile Information under First Name (Publicly Displayed) on the first page under Edit Profile. Then return to the top of the page and click Done Editing.

It makes sense that you have many more tops than pants because you can also wear tops with skirts, which I would expect to be more comfortable than pants.

I have the opposite problem from you with shoes - I wear men's size 7, which used to be easy to find, but now many brands do not make anything smaller than an 8. For athletic shoes, I can buy women's size 9, but that is unfortunately a very popular size for women, and so that is often sold out. I've known a couple of men who wore size 5 (they were about 5'4" tall), and so I don't know why size 7 should be hard to find these days.

Lars--because I also wear a men's size 7 (though I'm a woman), I know this:

Size 7 is a youth size. That's why so few men's shoe places carry it.

You can find it in the kids' section sometimes, but it sells out rapidly. For basic shoes, like sneaks or casual oxfords, you can easily buy shoes from Lands End kids' section.

When my sons wore 5 to 7, it was nearly impossible to get shoes for them! Now two of them wear 14 and its impossible again. At least the one that wears an 11 is easy to shop for!

I have to tell you a funny story from this weekend. I went shopping with a friend. I was so excited because I found a pair of pants tha fit perfect & was a size smaller than I normally wear. I was not wearing my glasses while shopping.

I get home and unpack the bag while wearing my glasses. The pants weren't. Size smaller - they were a size bigger than I normally wear! I just couldn't make out the tag without my glasses!

Moral of this story - wear glasses when you shop!

No Mommabird, the moral ofa guide the story is size is just a number. If you'd had your glasses on you probably would not have even tried on those pants, and would've missed out on a pair that fit perfectly.
