It has been mentioned recently that there have been too many meat dishes posted. Here is one using mock chicken, which I think even fanatical carnivores can enjoy.

Recipe is basic and not complicated.

Mock chicken is available from Chinese stores. Sliced and browned in oyster sauce cooked with rosemary and a tea spoon of liquid smoke.

Gravy is veggie stock with fish sauce added, cook with mushroom and diced tomato and 1/4 cup of red wine. Sprinkle with ground pepper and sesame oil.

O.K. Let me rephrase that! I have read on the Growing Spaces forum about some people in the PNW having problems with rain coming in through the open solar vents. I believe that the solution was to have a rain deflector built over the opening. The last that I had time to look, most of the ones located in Oregon were coastal. I'm 30 to 40 miles from the coast as the crow flies. Here is a Google photo link! I'm actually to the right of where they're putting the arrow! The photo isn't really up to date either. I've expanded the ponds and tried to naturalise the watershed back to a more natural state. I've been doing what I can to control erosion! The difference between the basic purpose that they use it for and my needs are the temperature requirements. I don't need to keep it at 80F all winter, but I can't have it dropping below 60F or so. I did originally plan on having a hothouse built inside of a greenhouse from the beginning. That was put on the side for a while and might have to be worked in again. It would be more efficient, as not all of my orchids require constant higher temps. Many of them actually need a variation and/or a seasonal dormancy. I want to have a lot of space. I know how easy it is to outgrow something. I also plan on growing vegetables all winter and will use it to overwinter plants from outside. I have huge pots of lemon grass, citrus, etc. I eat virtually all organic. I was raised that way anyway. I stopped eating all fast food years ago because I got so ill from it. Lately, I have been finding out that there are many things that I'm very allergic to. Virtually everything that has been processed. I always thought that I was sensitive to GM foods. I'm finding out that it's pretty much all glutens and several other common things. The gardens do well all summer, but I want to grow a lot for the winter as well. So, I'm trying to kill as many birds with one stone as possible. One of my primary concerns has also been about earthquakes. I know that it's just a matter of time before we have a big one. I'm not paranoid about them. I've spent my whole life living on the Pacific Ring of Fire around the world. We had a major fire here four years ago. It demonstrated how easily my area would be cut off from the outside. Even the major roads are tenous at best! I like to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. And somebody coming from say, Hong Kong because the political climate changed there might have lots of money to throw into setting up shop without having found out everything about what they were doing yet. Other than that you can stop following me around the site and targeting me anytime. Misspelling my screen name makes your intent transparent - as if it needed to be shown. Howdy, Folks. I've heard if one hangs a dead crow on a fence near their garden it will keep other crows away. My next door neighbor has had to replant corn three times. Each time it breaks ground crows pull the plant. Yesterday he shot one and hung it on the fence. I've not talked to him and yet don't know the effectivness . This morning I had my coffee and a bagel on the back porch. I kept looking at the dead crow and thought of Poe's, The Raven (remember? Nevermore, Lenore?). When I came to the computer I was inspired. I'm using the Caribou blend. I didn't want to grind it myself. I told them I wanted it ground for the paper filter type of maker. It came ground very, very thin. I thought it should have been lightly coarse. Am I wrong? That coffee is okay but for my taste buds no much more than less expensive stuff. Gurley, you caught me, didn't you. Yes, I live at Candler. I have updated my will in a simplistic fashion for the present. I've found the local N.C. probate office accepts an informal will if signed and no witnesses. There were changes I wanted to make to the old one and that was convenient for the time being. I'm preparing two file folders. One has original documents and the other copies. The other will be furnished a daugher whose named Executor (they don't use Executrix any more). Some of my things require explanation such as an insurance policy which has a face value higher than actual value. I need to include a letter explaining I borrowed some money on the policy years ago and just have never paid it back. Otherwise I think it would be confusing to them. I plan to pay it back if and when I sell a lot. It is dry in WNC! I'm sure it is elsewhere, too. I'm mowing every couple of weeks rather than weekly. It sure makes one think about global warming. But, I have seen it this way even with ground cracking only for the rain to begin and come almost daily until Fall gets here. I still drive the Miata maybe once a week. It's still fun. It came with a supposedly cancelled XM radio. I generally don't try to listen to music because of noise, it being a convertible. I was at a stop light and began messing with the radio. I got an XM channel with 30's and 40's music. It was good listening. I heard later XM has sample days trying to get new subscribers. I wish everyone well. I'm sorry the topic has slowed so much. I agree about her probably having people to shop for her. but at the same time, how annoying to not just be able to click on a site and check out but to have to get someone else to buy everything for you! I guess you could create an alter ego, but then do you have to have all the item you buy shipped to somewhere else besides your home so people don't know it is you? And then have someone pick them up for you and bring them to you? Seems like a lot of unnecessary hassle, esp. since I think she has a newborn or very young baby.

That is sold in Asian stores as "Mock Chicken" . It is like seitan. For many centuries it has been used in many ways in vegetarian diets by the Buddists. You can go to a Chinese vegetarian restaurant and find amazing things they can do with this stuff. They can simulate beef, fish, shrimp, duck, pork, etc.

Imagine fried pork chops that's vegetarin.

The Thai restaurant near my house makes the best mock duck Pad Thai with it. Absolutely delicious.

Dcarch, now that "As the World Turns" ended after a 54 (?) year run, I feel more open to letting your 'mystery posts' offer me the excitement I need to get me through the week. Your formula troubles me a bit, though: We've been losing sleep since Sept 13 wondering what that the goop on the fruit plate is. You know, "the black stuff [that] will require a thread of its own" which we've not seen to date. Over a week now itching to know what you need a dozen pounds of garlic?! Oh, the humanity!

Seitan - I bought it the day I read your post. Will cook with it. And will report back on it.

Jim - If I didn't want to be nudged out of my familiar ways I'd have no need to frequent this forum. Seitan is by no means the first thing I've purchased on a whim, nor will it be the last. I trust our forum members. Even dcarch, sometimes.

Just to be sure there is no misunderstanding, my post was intended as friendly kidding, including kidding myself. I thought it was in the spirit of your funny reference to "As the Worlld Turns". I hope the quite serious tone of your response doesn't mean you were displeased.

Sorry Jim - According to my phone records I spent over 1.5 hours on the phone talking to (yelling at?) Verizon Wireless last night. I guess I only had but so much humor left in me!

As for the seitan, I don't think I'll be reporting on it any time soon after all. Last night I took the box from the fridge to read the ingredients and I guess never put it back. A call to the company this morning confirmed I should not use it.

At $4.69 for 8 oz I think I can spend my food money more wisely. Not to mention how the woman at the health food store inexplicably jumped down my throat when I simply asked if they sold it in any form other than cubed. I have NO idea what that was about, but it didn't leave me wanting to shop there again!

OMG! I had the same experience 4 days ago, although no need for yelling on my part. The tech rep was competent and polite It was an ordeal but my new router is working. On a previous occasion I spent 1.5 or maybe 2.0 hours on the phone without a solution to the problem. Anyway, I no longer have to rely on my neighbor's wi-fi. The inconsiderate guy wasn't providing a strong enough signal, so I got fed up with his service and got my own. ;-)

Sorry to hear about the demise of the seitan. It sure looks good in dcarch's pics.
