Would you rather have wind, snow or 20 below?

The wind we've had this winter is unbelievable! It woke me up one night. I thought we were having a tornado. One day last week I heard what I thought was my plow man back again and I wondered why. He had been here a day or two before. I went to the kitchen window to see and it wasn't him, it was the wind.

We've had varying amounts of snow every day since Friday. If the snow would fall to the ground and stay there I would vote snow but it doesn't. First it blows from the NW and piles up where I have to shovel it and pay the plow guy to come. Then in a day or less it blows from the S or SE and moves that same snow back where it came from. I shovel, he plows and everything is fine.......for a day or 3. And it starts all over again.

Now we get to the 20 below part. The weather man just warned us the cold was coming back Monday. That's bad enough but to add the tornado wind to it is just miserable. I've gathered quite a few frozen eggs lately. My dog thinks it's great.

None of the above......which is why I love on the beautiful central coast of California.
But the lack of rain in any appreciable amount is sad.

I don't mind a bit of snow (under 4 inches or so)... but I hate the wind and I'd hate 20 below (which I do not believe I've ever experienced).

Maybe layer some different textures -- some american hollies crosses like Foster and Savannah don't get too high and are very beautiful and not that shiny; a weeping yaupon, and arborvitae would complete the picture? The native plants would handle the soil well and keep it together I would suspect. I can't think of groundcovers that will knit up the ground besides somewhat invasive things like liriope and pachysandra... Sounds like a lovely place. Rose

We pretty much prefer to ride alone but occasionally will ride with a few friends who've we've ridden with for years. We occasionally go on large organized rides, but not too often, and it's usually for some charity event. The largest organized ride we've ever been on was just a few weekends ago. It was a ride for the Make A Wish Foundation out of the Elk Grove Harley Shop (CA). There were in excess of 4500 bikes on the freeway at one time. Man-oh-man, the sound of all those bikes (Harleys, BMW's, rice rockets, Hondas, they were all represented) starting up at one time is unbelievable!!! It was a fully escorted ride and all entrances were blocked off by CHP before the first bikes passed. As cars started catching up with the last quarter of the bikes it got a little dicey but most of the riders said back there said it wasn't too bad...except for all the cars who had drivers on cell phones. :(( Gazania, the Pacific Coast route is awesome on a good day. A lot of people are picking up B as the better location, but several things you have said about A make it sound like the better location -- rising real estate values, $100K below the price of B but $200K less than the price of a similar renovated house in the area and an odd ball in terms of not having been renovated while the other is an oddball because it is "half-baked modernist." You can get into some serious money if you start trying to do a facelift on the exterior. I'd want to know I could give it better curb appeal as well as update the kitchen -- and both can get expensive. I do like the architectural details in A -- the transom, the window -- can't see a lot else. From what I've seen and heard here, I'd probably like the overall house and get more satisfaction out of doing it. I'm not clear from what I'm reading here whether you would be living in the home while the work is done. I wouldn't be able to use that kitchen at all -- I'd get a wash tub and use a camp stove out back until it was done. Better now than in January. The adjoined houses don't appeal to me as much -- maybe it's a Texas thang -- wide open spaces and all. ;-) Make sure the legal issues are fully resolved (final orders, appeal times have run, titles cleared -- everything). Do you know why A came back on the market? If it has to do with property condition, wouldn't that need to have been disclosed? Did someone buy it and decide they didn't have the time, money or patience to redo it or did the original sale fall through? I'd want to know all I could there. You may get a honey of a deal. Houses that re-list tend to not do as well the second time around, and this house has been looking for a special person from the start -- one with patience and TLC or a big budget for a teardown and the desire to add another multi-million dollar home to the neighborhood -- which is more likely with the market rising there. It's an interesting problem to have -- will be interested to see what happens.

I am the target market for your house: mid 30s with 2 kids who can afford it. Other than the kitchen which is a complicated puzzle, there's a few other things I would recommend to update your home. Dining room: remove the wallpaper and replace the blue curtains with floor to ceiling sheers. Currently the room looks busy and the beautiful view is obscured by the curtains. The items on the mantle look too small and the picture looks too small above the fireplace. Make the fireplace look grander with a much larger work of art above it and nothing on the mantle. Living room: get crisp and tailored cream colored cotton slip covers for the couches along with new decorative pillows. The ones on the couches look beat up. Remove the single clock on the mantle and the TV trays. If you have any wood side boards or other wood furniture you can put the TV on use that to place the TV on instead of the metal stand and pare down the components and speakers. The stand doesn't go with the decor. Remove the clocks and candle sconces as well since they aren't on trend. Formal Sitting Room: It feels like a room with too much furniture and no purpose. Many buyers from my generation aren't interested in a formal sitting room next to the entry. I would either make the piano the focal point instead of sticking it in a corner or restage it as a formal gentleman's office if you have the right furniture. A lot of homes being built of that size these days have a formal office in that spot instead of a sitting room. You want your target market to envision themselves living in your home. You have beautiful furniture and things but they are things that appeal to a different generation than the ones that are the target market for your home. Members of your generation are usually either downsizing or moving. Check out the websites for Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel to get a feel for the aesthetic of your target market and you'll see the difference. Unfortunately a lot of people looking at homes don't have vision or creativity so you have to help them along.

I don't like the cold, I don't mind the wind we do not have any trees in our yard, but this would be first if we had trees in our yard, and you know what snow did to our area this past week. I live in Georgia. So for me it is cold. I will stay indoors and cover over with lots of blankets.

I live in Florida and I HATE cold weather, but to answer your question - snow would be what I'd pick. Wind scares me and the cold keeps me indoors, which I don't like.

A little snow is fine.
Never been in 20 below..rarely at 20 above..

We've actually had less wind than usual too..

We often get wind, snow and 20 below. :) I've seen it -60C here with the wind. If it was *just* 20 below (which works out to almost -29C for us), I would be okay with it. I can handle that, just layer up. I don't mind watching it snow. That means it's not too cold outside. It won't snow when it's too cold. Not a fan of the wind when it's winter. Makes driving very difficult.

I hate the wind, and I hate severe cold weather. I love watching it snow. Don't like to drive in it, though.

20o below isn't that bad if you're dressed for it and the wind is calm. It's a normal temp for us - though not for weeks on end like it has been - and people go about their business as usual. No decimating grocery stores for bread, milk, and toilet paper. We all have garages full of snow shovels of all types, so there's never a run on those either. Lake Superior, which I am very close to, is frozen over - something that historically only happens every 20 years or so.

50o below is okay too as long as you're aware you're freezing to death. That's rare, but it does happen and you just have to bundle up, go out and see what it feels like.

I would rather have snow if I have to pick between the three of them. I don't like wind at all, especially if there is snow on the ground. -20 degree weather is not fun either.

Moved to the UP of Michigan last summer and would have to say I'd pick the wind without the 20 below. however we are getting a lot of both.

Snow, hate the cold and since I've been through 2 bad hurricanes the wind terrifies me. I like a nice breeze but if it makes a noise it's too windy for me. On windy nights I don't sleep much.

We've had a bitterly cold winter in Southwestern Ontario. several -20C Temps and lower. I love it. Our city crew has been super busy fixing broken water mains, the furnace companies have been fixing/replacing furnaces that won't start.

But when it's this cold it's sunny, and the roads have been dry, so driving is perfect. But when it's this cold I don't start my car The milder temps bring the snow, and we often get snow, drizzle and freezing rain. Ugly.

This picture is from an hour north of us. These are the snowbanks I remember as a child.

Hard to say as we just had another big snowfall with freezing rain and another is in the forecast for Wed. and I hate the snow/ice. I also absolutely hate the cold - but then the strong winds made the house shake - and caused the snow to cause whiteouts. Since our dog is a snoweater - I guess I am going to go with the cold - as long as the furnace does not break down. I hate winter.

I'll take snow. For as much as I love winter, I do not like the wind when it's very cold. I can take some pretty cold temps, but the cold kills my ears. Even when my ears are covered. Guess it's due to horrible sinuses, allergies, head problems in general. (that didn't sound right at all did it? haha)

I like snow. The wind scares me and the extreme cold keeps me indoors. We have had mostly wind and extreme cold this winter. When it snows, only get 1 or 2 inches.

I love winter but this year we broke all records for snowfall. We have had it all - the bitterly cold, the wind and the snow and I went through all this with a broken window in my attic which meant my house always had a chill no matter how hard my furnace tried to keep up. Thankfully that window was replaced a few days ago and the temp in my house has remained steady. Didn't help that my thermostat was next to the attic stairs where the draft would hit it. So glad my 46 year old furnace is one of the good ones. More snow this week and cold temps.

It's good I picked snow, because it's snowing now and we have a lot drooping the branches down. I don't like heavy snow. Loved the powdery stuff a few weeks ago. This is sloppy and heavy.

You forgot to tell 'em of one of the outstanding benefits of tourism in your area in winter (here, too, sometimes) ...

... that visitors can be given the opportunity ... and even shown how to walk on water!

Just like Jesus was reported to have done ... but it wasn't that cold, there!

If I had to choose, I'll take the snow. Bone chilling cold is dangerous and hard to deal with. Really high wind is no fun. The potential for damage and injury is high. That leaves snow.

I'm just tired with it all......
It's -5 here in CO Springs, with ice and snow on the ground, I just about froze walking from my car to the door last night because the wind was so strong and COLD.

20 below with no wind and no snow. As my husband says, you don't have to scoop or snow blow cold! That said, I'd prefer to avoid all three :-) but that's hard to do here in the U.P.!

Mothertee, are you willing to share where you live? I'm in Laurium, on the Keweenaw Peninsula, way up at the tip top. Been here for almost 6 years now!
