What kind of warm long underwear for GS in snow?

My grandson is going to Wash. DC again next week (Feb. 13) with Junior States of America and needs to get something Warm! This kid has grown up in FL and hasn't really known cold and snow! This will be a good opportunity to find out before he goes to Dartmouth in the fall.

I know there are new things now that are better and more comfortable than the old fashioned long johns but what are they? I see so many different kinds online. He has to get a new black suit (he's outgrown his old one), hat/cap and scarf, new shoes, warm socks. My DH just sent him some money.

I just read the thread about falling down and the things to wear on your shoes and the socks over your shoes. A kid will probably think it's fun to fall in the snow/ice. :( He's pretty mature though.

He is the Director Of North Florida at JSA so he will be in charge of a lot of things in DC

How long will he be there depends on what you buy. I would not worry about long johns etc unless he will be outside for long periods of time. He should be able to buy clothes there, if he looks around and even checks out the thrift stores. If he is FL he probably will not be able to buy what he needs there, unless he contacts some of the snow birds from the Midwest/East. Wish I could help more, but here in ND winter gear is different. Also he needs rain stuff, waterproof shoes, etc. Hope others can help and hope he has a great time.

I bet he will be indoors most of the time, and might get too warm if he wears a lot of layers.

What my kids wear for OUTDOOR activities in the cold is Under Armour. It is a brand of compression pants and shirts. They keep you very warm, but wick off sweat. Don't get a cheap off brand, but Nike also has some good stuff.

David, Fair enough. Yes, Ive seen the dustbowl, and know about "The Year Without a Summer", and I also know that the last time the earth was as warm as projected in 100 years, the forest prairie line was not near OKC down to Dallas, but much further west near Lubbock Texas. It is also thought that the over all winters were milder. Which actually gives me a big of hope so to speak. Though,hard data is lacking during that time. And FTR, I do think the current issues are partly caused by the natural cycles of NA climate. Specifically negative PDO, La Nina during a negative PDO, and unusually warm Atlantic (actually warmer than would be indicated by past climate) Have been saying that from the start. BUT hardly all of it. There was no May snow in Arkansas during the 30's. Nor did the Arctic ice melt as it is now. What's more, many of those records are now being broken. Lastly, those extremes tended to be one sided i.e. drought and heat, not lurching back and forth from one en to the other with basically no transition. I appreciate, you coming back to clarify, but I do disagree that we can't know for sure. inge, Do nothing is exactly what it sounds as though you are saying. It's thought that the Chinese lose more than 10% of their annual crop production due to reduction in sunlight intensity sunlight alone due to pollution, and that was in the 90's. Pollution has gotten far worse since then, so the number is certainly higher now. Where is there not pollution? Where do people not live and travel to and from? Some claim the atmosphere is too big to affect. If that were true why does it only weight on 14.7 pounds are sealevel? That is all the mass of the entire atmosphere above you at the very bottom of that atmosphere. Hardly an insurmountable amount The biological/climate system is only a thin skin around the earth, exactly where we live. Hialt, I have built some very simple and low retaining walls along one side of a sidewalk. The ground slopes and I put steps in the walk every 8 feet. The low walls match the steps in the flower beds. In other words, the steps are only about 8" high, so the walls are only about 8" high (but extend into the ground for another 4 - 6 inches. I dug a trench about 6 inches down and 18 inches wide I think my walls are about 5 feet long. Laid stones the size of cantaloupes in the bottom of the trench in 3 rows. On these 3 rows of melon-sized stones, I laid 2 rows of stones, on those 2 rows, I laid 1 row. Between each layer, I shoveled in some pre-mix concrete. The concrete works better for me with these rough stones than mortar. Thats all there was to it. The stones are basalt which is very easy to find around here. Youll hear how you need to pour a footing of concrete before you build your stone wall - - but, my "stone wall" is only 12 or 14 inches tall. They've been there about 10 years and frost has never moved them. Rows of 3 stones, 2 stones, 1 stone - bags of premix concrete, a little water and then stir with a hoe, shovel between layers of stone - - easy, peasy. Sounds like a fun trip. Breckenridge is a fun place. I was just out in CO skiing a couple weeks ago. Were they board boots, or just snow boots? I actually prefer to have my tennis shoes with me when I am skiing. After a day on the slopes - the light shoes feel SO GOOD! And they are much easier to fit in your day locker. Most places have the snow scooped off. Tennis shoes are fine. Unless it warms up - then it gets slushy. He would be renting board boots if he is renting a snowboard for lessons anyway. Or did he have his own equipment? I like to rent - it is such a pain to haul that stuff very far. I hope he gives skiing a try also. Skiing is much easier than boarding - but boarding is fun. It helps to be YOUNG! :) He should definately have a helmet on - but if he is in lessons they will make sure he has one on.

I agree with what Suzieque posted. You're an instigator, Glenda, whether you realize it or not. Many times you have posted something vague, and when folks ask questions, you get your tail feathers up and come out swinging. I agree, hugs are wonderful, and are to be cherished, remembered, and kept close to the heart. But your grandson would have given you huge, happy, loving, heartfelt hugs in response to your gift to him even if he'd given you a gift (cheap gift or expensive gift, or somewhere in between). His hugs in those photographs were in response to the fishing boat you gave him -- they should not have been, and I don't believe they were - his Christmas gift to you. It's even posted, somewhere not too far above: "Posted by glenda_al (My Page) on Tue, Dec 28, 10 at 23:20 If U cannot say anything nice about my gift giving DONT, darn it. I did what I did and that is it, pure and simple! Leave me alone!" So, you were all huffy about perceived reactions to YOU GIVING A GIFT TO YOUR GRANDSON, when, in fact, this entire discussion was started by you with the subject line My gift from GS: it's flat and oval And you could have easily avoided a whole lot of this if, when you finally responded to all of the requests to find out what it was that your grandson gave you, you had said something like, "he, his father, and his stepmother all gave me..." and said what those gift were. Instead, your response as to what your grandson gave you was this: "Hugs, big hugs! That was it. I appreciated that." It's really not fair to call foul when you started it.

I lived in the DC suburbs years ago. It can be mild during the winter. He needs to read the forecast to see what he will need for the few days there. He ought to have a warm hat, outer coat, scarf and mittens at least. He should plan to layer his wardrobe, and wear a nice, warm undershirt.

Check out outdoor sports stores. They have really good stuff, including the underarmor.

I'm not sure he will need long underwear for D.C. but it wouldn't be a bad idea for Dartmouth. D.C. weather is similar to here. In the day time, temps can be anywhere from 40 to 70. At night, 30's, 40's or 50's.

I checked our weather forecast for next week--it's going to be in the 50s during the day; 30s at night. So I wouldn't worry about long underwear or ice. That's warmer than usual for this area, which will be to his benefit.

You certainly have a young man to be proud of!!!!

Than you all! I'm sure he'll be fine with those temps. It gets that cold in Naples, FL. I texted him to get a new suit, a warm cap and scarf and gloves or mittens and he needs new shoes. He's a good shopper and he will wait until he gets to New Hampshire to buy whet he needs for winter at Dartmouth.

Yes, we are all so proud of him ~ all the family members! He's smart and knows how to study and plan his time. He's been taking college classes since he was in middle school and all through high school.

He's not really sure at this stage. Ideally He'd like to become a diplomat or an ambassador. My DH tells him to become an engineer, any kind of engineer. They are the highest paid now.

He's going to Beijing for a month this summer with the JSA

You must be so proud of him, Dorothy. He sounds like a great kid. I remember reading when he was admitted to Dartmouth. I get so sick of people talking about how bad the youth of today are, and it's just not true. There are many examples, of which your Grandson is one, of fine young people.

I recently read an article on how great merino wool is for warmth purposes, especially when traveling. It's a wicking type of material but unlike synthetics it doesn't retain odor and needs to be washed infrequently. I found some at TJ maxx and love it. He probably won't need it for DC, but he will for those long winters at college. Good luck.

I think you have a misconception of the climate of DC. Don't load him up with long underwear or snow shoes.
