What kind of warm long underwear for GS in snow?

My grandson is going to Wash. DC again next week (Feb. 13) with Junior States of America and needs to get something Warm! This kid has grown up in FL and hasn't really known cold and snow! This will be a good opportunity to find out before he goes to Dartmouth in the fall.

I know there are new things now that are better and more comfortable than the old fashioned long johns but what are they? I see so many different kinds online. He has to get a new black suit (he's outgrown his old one), hat/cap and scarf, new shoes, warm socks. My DH just sent him some money.

I just read the thread about falling down and the things to wear on your shoes and the socks over your shoes. A kid will probably think it's fun to fall in the snow/ice. :( He's pretty mature though.

He is the Director Of North Florida at JSA so he will be in charge of a lot of things in DC

How long will he be there depends on what you buy. I would not worry about long johns etc unless he will be outside for long periods of time. He should be able to buy clothes there, if he looks around and even checks out the thrift stores. If he is FL he probably will not be able to buy what he needs there, unless he contacts some of the snow birds from the Midwest/East. Wish I could help more, but here in ND winter gear is different. Also he needs rain stuff, waterproof shoes, etc. Hope others can help and hope he has a great time.

I bet he will be indoors most of the time, and might get too warm if he wears a lot of layers.

What my kids wear for OUTDOOR activities in the cold is Under Armour. It is a brand of compression pants and shirts. They keep you very warm, but wick off sweat. Don't get a cheap off brand, but Nike also has some good stuff.

David, Fair enough. Yes, Ive seen the dustbowl, and know about "The Year Without a Summer", and I also know that the last time the earth was as warm as projected in 100 years, the forest prairie line was not near OKC down to Dallas, but much further west near Lubbock Texas. It is also thought that the over all winters were milder. Which actually gives me a big of hope so to speak. Though,hard data is lacking during that time. And FTR, I do think the current issues are partly caused by the natural cycles of NA climate. Specifically negative PDO, La Nina during a negative PDO, and unusually warm Atlantic (actually warmer than would be indicated by past climate) Have been saying that from the start. BUT hardly all of it. There was no May snow in Arkansas during the 30's. Nor did the Arctic ice melt as it is now. What's more, many of those records are now being broken. Lastly, those extremes tended to be one sided i.e. drought and heat, not lurching back and forth from one en to the other with basically no transition. I appreciate, you coming back to clarify, but I do disagree that we can't know for sure. inge, Do nothing is exactly what it sounds as though you are saying. It's thought that the Chinese lose more than 10% of their annual crop production due to reduction in sunlight intensity sunlight alone due to pollution, and that was in the 90's. Pollution has gotten far worse since then, so the number is certainly higher now. Where is there not pollution? Where do people not live and travel to and from? Some claim the atmosphere is too big to affect. If that were true why does it only weight on 14.7 pounds are sealevel? That is all the mass of the entire atmosphere above you at the very bottom of that atmosphere. Hardly an insurmountable amount The biological/climate system is only a thin skin around the earth, exactly where we live. Sorry to hear about your shoulder surgery too, DTD. I'm sure you will make a lot of progress with PT and hopefully be ready for the gardening season in the spring. Sounds like you picked the right time to have your surgery and recovery. :-) I was just looking over this thread again. This year, we are thinking along the line Bill is thinking tooÃ¢ÂÂ¦lol My husband does all the shoveling lately but this year he's dealing with Tendonitis on his elbow and even using the electric shovel, is problematic. It has to be lifted and moved often enough to become a problem when your arm is not 100%. And even the adaptations for shovels for ergonomics don't seem to be workable. So as much as I enjoy the snow, we're really glad we haven't had much of it so far too.

I used Clorox Clean-Up then switched over to Tough Jobs Bathroom Cleaner with Bleach when my mother-in-law, who has Alzheimer's, lived with us. I know they're not made for fabric but the combination soap/bleach made a tedious job much easier. Rinsing, soaking, disinfecting, borax, Biz, Clorox, Oxi, Oxydol, detergents with bleach, etc. First, I tried the new undies route, with pads, but the Alzheimer's was more advanced than we thought. Resorted to the Depends. The ones we order for her now are more like Pampers. Laundry IS personal. At least we're talking about actual dirty laundry on an actual laundry forum. Colored panties might not hold up to the toughest cleaners and you may notice some skin reaction if they aren't thoroughly rinsed. I always washed my MIL's undies separate or with her washcloths which were about the same...sigh.

Agreed...some of the snowfall figures for Japanese cities are staggering, when you consider how high the average yearly minimum temperature is. There are places on the west coast that average several FEET of snow per year, but hardly ever go below 25F. Must be a terrible, slushy mess all throughout winter there. (but in the mountains, of course, the snow is presumably more powdery) The difference is again due to the factors mentioned above; when the US east coast has rain in winter, it's usually because a system is pulling up warm air from the Gulf. If this so happens to interact with enough cold air and form a cyclone, you get a nor'easter. OTOH, west coast of Japan is getting snow caused by incredibly cold Siberian air passing over the warm Sea of Japan. It never really stops because of the Siberian High pressure system, that influences weather patterns all the way over to the various 'stans. It's like a non-stop version of Lake Effect snow. Due to the almost 4X greater surface area and much, much greater depth, it doesn't substantially freeze though, as most of the Great Lakes can.

I lived in the DC suburbs years ago. It can be mild during the winter. He needs to read the forecast to see what he will need for the few days there. He ought to have a warm hat, outer coat, scarf and mittens at least. He should plan to layer his wardrobe, and wear a nice, warm undershirt.

Check out outdoor sports stores. They have really good stuff, including the underarmor.

I'm not sure he will need long underwear for D.C. but it wouldn't be a bad idea for Dartmouth. D.C. weather is similar to here. In the day time, temps can be anywhere from 40 to 70. At night, 30's, 40's or 50's.

I checked our weather forecast for next week--it's going to be in the 50s during the day; 30s at night. So I wouldn't worry about long underwear or ice. That's warmer than usual for this area, which will be to his benefit.

You certainly have a young man to be proud of!!!!

Than you all! I'm sure he'll be fine with those temps. It gets that cold in Naples, FL. I texted him to get a new suit, a warm cap and scarf and gloves or mittens and he needs new shoes. He's a good shopper and he will wait until he gets to New Hampshire to buy whet he needs for winter at Dartmouth.

Yes, we are all so proud of him ~ all the family members! He's smart and knows how to study and plan his time. He's been taking college classes since he was in middle school and all through high school.

He's not really sure at this stage. Ideally He'd like to become a diplomat or an ambassador. My DH tells him to become an engineer, any kind of engineer. They are the highest paid now.

He's going to Beijing for a month this summer with the JSA

You must be so proud of him, Dorothy. He sounds like a great kid. I remember reading when he was admitted to Dartmouth. I get so sick of people talking about how bad the youth of today are, and it's just not true. There are many examples, of which your Grandson is one, of fine young people.

I recently read an article on how great merino wool is for warmth purposes, especially when traveling. It's a wicking type of material but unlike synthetics it doesn't retain odor and needs to be washed infrequently. I found some at TJ maxx and love it. He probably won't need it for DC, but he will for those long winters at college. Good luck.

I think you have a misconception of the climate of DC. Don't load him up with long underwear or snow shoes.
