Vinyl 'wood' next to real wood--here's a pic

I decided on sheet vinyl in a wood pattern for my new laundry alcove, but worried about how the floor would look up against real (old) wood. I'm very pleased with the result! Here's a picture. The vinyl floor was just put in yesterday, and we have yet to install the strip that will join the two floors.

The alcove is in a rather dark corner, so most of the time the floor doesn't look as bright as it does in this picture. So I think that helps, too. But overall, I'd say "not bad at all."

Hey that does look good! My cousin has a vinyl wood floor and it is nice, easy to clean. I think it's nicer than laminate. ( especially for a laundry area where you may have leakage)

I've heard they make vinyl planks that look alot like wood flooring...have you seen those?

Actually, that's what I bought first. The salesman and the product literature claimed the planks were 100% waterproof. But after I got them home and read the instructions, I stopped at the point where they said to clean with only a lightly dampened mop. They cautioned not to get the planks wet. Huh?? Back they went to the store.

I really don't see the appeal of the wood look ceramic tile, but it must be popular, because everybody is making it. Just me, but I wouldn't like to put it up against real wood. If you like it, then go for it. You're the one that has to live there, not anybody else.

Sheree, I have vinyl "tile" in the kitchen (and wish I had the above wood look instead) and real wood just beyond it. My elderly dogs tend to drip after drinking water, and I've told myself "water is the enemy of wood" so many times that it's practically become a mantra. Most of the time you can find me with a microfiber cloth in my hand, wiping up drips. I'm so glad I don't have real wood in the kitchen.......

I have been thinking of vinyl wood also but wonder if it outgases like some plastics do that bother me. $254,000 in my area buys a one bedroom condo with a kitchen too small to eat in, a small dining room, a small living room, one small bedroom, and one small bathroom. I know one townhouse owner who sold her townhouse for over 1/2 million dollars 2.5 years ago in my neighborhood who had pergo floors in her living room that were gorgeous. Her home sale helped my appraisal when I was refinancing. I wonder if Pergo outgases? I have allergies to certain plastics that outgas like vinyl shower curtains and allergies to particle board. But I want wooden floors but I fear them getting ruined by my little dogs and my home office traffic.

Either match the hardwood or go back to carpet. Since this is a rental, you will want to stick with the cheapest, easiest floor to replace = carpet. And be OK with the traditional idea that rental flooring has a life span of 7 years. Yes. In 7 years you will need new flooring. Only hardwood or stone will get you away from that concept. In a cold climate, wood is better than stone. But again this isn't going to come cheap. If you need cheap and warm, then carpet is your best option.

Wow! That looks fabulous. I kept going back to the first pic looking for the vinyl!

Did you install it over anything? Or did you strip the old floor off? What is the brand and color? I have linoleum tiles in my basement that I want to cover with something kid proof. TIA!

I was afraid someone would ask me that, Auntie Ellen! LOL

I got the flooring at Home Depot, and I must have burned out a few brain cells staring at the different patterns, because all I can remember is that it was a premium grade. However, I'll probably be back in HD today, and I'll get an answer for you.

As for what's underneath, it's heavy plywood. The old floor was rotting badly so we took it off.

Hi Alisande!!!! Love your new floor!

I am thinking about the vinyl planks when I replace my laminate (not for a few years). There is a interesting thread about the Novalis brand with lots of pictures over on the flooring forum.

I'm glad the vinyl planks work for a lot of people. They really do look good, at least in the store. I haven't seen them anywhere else.

Alisande, it looks great! Your floor upkeeping job is going to be so easy.

I have the Novalis vinyl planks -- Golden Oak -- nest to my maple floor -- Maple Syrup -- and they look just fine together.

My vinyl planks get wet all the time and they've been sticking just fine. I think they're over a year old now. Love 'em!
