A few greenhouse pictures

Between nursing bigbaby and making supper I managed to squeeze in a couple minutes to download some pictures taken at the greenhouse today.

To refresh your memories and for the newbies; my brother has a greenhouse that I work at in the Spring of the year.

We got in a new variety of Echeveria yesterday.

These cool variegated sedums were in the same shipment.

This is a new variety of calibrichoa we're trying this year. Coral with a red eye.

An aloe is in bloom already.

Earlier this week I stuck some cuttings.

There is hope that Spring is coming even with school closed today, 6 inches of new snow on the ground and a howling wind outside.

Well, I'll try again. Had a long post with suggestions and compliments (great photos and a wonderful greenhouse!) (try more gesneriads and how about some begonias, especially some of the less-common ones that get people to say THAT's a BeGONia?!) but it disappeared before I could even hit 'preview'. Aargh! I can't see your ribbon plant clearly enough to be absolutely sure, but I think it's what people around here call 'tapeworm plant'. I call mine ribbon fern, but it's proper name seems to be Homolocladium platycladium. One site called it Muehlenbeckia without a species, and since it was the UCLA botanical garden I'm insecure. It isn't actually a fern, and if you look close, in early spring I think, you'll see tiny flowers at the joints, and I think I've occasionally seen berries, tho' that may be on something else. I forget. Do that a lot. Somebody told me a long time ago I should pick a plant family and stick to it--you can't possibly know more than one very thoroughly. Well, but that's what makes it fun!

This is the first time I've grown one. Only a few seeds out of 25 even germinated. Hot? Scotch and Habs are around 500K scovilles...give or take a few K. The ghost is over 1 million. Yeah...it is hard to believe. I plan on making salsa for the a-holes in the office who complain that my current salsa is not hot enough! Should be interesting. My hab hot sauce can already make you see things that don't exist. Just the mist in the air gets everyone and the dogs to gagging! I washed all the utensils and food processor up after finishing. Must have left a lot of grinded up pepper mash on everything. The hot dish water opened up the pores of my hands and wrists allowing that crap to seep in and take hold. For the next several hours, I felt like I was arm wrestling with a blow torch. Almost wanted to saw my hands off. So I will be treating the ghost chilies with lots of respect!

Harry Beautiful plants and the pots. You are able to get them to color up beautifully...don't need any blooms! Harry is real expert, he can grow great succulents in about anything! For most of us, drainage is must. burnttree, what do you mean by pot holders - more decorative containers? (usually called 'cache pots'). To elevate pot with drainage holes with a planted succulent is a good idea - it will keep them sitting in excessive water. Don't forget to empty cache pots, especially important after the rain. I don't even have any saucers or communal trays underneath pots with succulents while outside, so if it rains, I am confident that water will drain away. If using clay pots, small amount of the water could evaporate thru it which doesn't happen with plastic pots. But if the container is glazed, there won't be any evaporation. Rina

Spring is not far off! I'd love to be able to work in a greenhouse! Is calibrichoa also known as 'Million Bells"? That was one plant my sister couldn't kill.

Oh, thanks....I really needed that, what with the snow and blowing outside. That calibrichoa is lovely, as are the sedums.

I love those coral calibrichoa. I especially like that there's no need for deadheading like petunias.

Those aloe blossoms are beautiful and I never knew they bloomed!

Thanks for the pics. We need a shot of color about this time of year.

Ron, is the calibrichoa the same as million bells? I had one like that year before last, then couldn't find it last year. I loved it in my terra cotta pot.

I corralled the grandson and he picked out flower seeds and we went into the greenhouse and planted today. I have itchy fingers and decided to start some of the cool weather crops, spinach, lettuce, chard, etc, as well. It was so nice today, I couldn't stand being inside the house. The greenhouse was over 80* and lovely!

Thank you Ron. I needed that! We were supposed to drive down your way today, for a friend's retirement party tonight. But it's not looking so good at the moment. Worse up here than down there... Spring will come and we will forget all this snow and ice and cold. Right?

Bummer. I could hardly look, Ron. Guess you recall the "greenhouse incident" here last year. The rubble is still laying in a heap at my folks' house. *sigh*

I have several of the sedums you have,but i must look for that million bells,love the color of it.

In the first picture,is that plant on the right a firecracker plant??

Oh Wow, thank you all for the compliments. i really enjoy working in the greenhouse. Especially on a day like today when it's cold and there is so much snow outside.
Kathi, in the first picture on the right, those are pencil cacti cuttings. They are a Euphorbia.
