Cabinet Doors look funny

Hi everyone,

This is my first post even though I have been pouring through the forums every day for advice and help.

I think the bottom cabinets on the left look funny. My cabinet guy says the cabinets need to go this way because of the finished side of the box. But the doors don't match the upper cabinets. Am I crazy or do the bottom cabinets look backwards? Should I ask them to change it and move the hinges? I think this is going to drive me crazy!

They look backwards to me too and I think it would drive me crazy also. I would ask him to change them.

Yea, that'd drive me a bit nuts, too.

Other then that, beautiful kitchen! Can't wait to see the finished work.

I agree, the darker one looks richer. Is there enough light, since the cabinets and floor seem darker? It looks like the lighting would be fine, with the windows and the lighter countertop. I have a Caesarstone light countertop, (Nougat), and I can say that red wine does not stain. Of course, I have not left it for hours on the counter either. The one caution I have is when I left an empty can near the sink overnight. I think it was sitting in some water (near where I keep a sponge) and in the morning there was a light rust ring. It did take some scrubbing to come off. I don't leave cans sitting there anymore.

I think if you have a few other texture contrasts in the kitchen it will create a little echo of the matte vs. really shiny, which would look awesome. My hood is a combination of brushed and polished, for instance. Or you could use frosted glass in a cabinet door, and clear in a window. Perhaps use some dark shiny and matte light tiles (or vice versa) in a backsplash. That kind of thing. One or two things, not everything.

daisychain01 - thanks! They are the KC seashell. Alabaster seemed too white for our existing countertops (Cambria Canterbury quartz). But I wonder if I would think the same now looking at the whole picture! Things that we did a year ago I would change a bit looking at it now. But oh well! We're having some header (architraves?) put in, and even though they aren't frou frouey at all, I still wonder now if they are too ornate. But whatever. We had no baseboards or casings for close to a year, so anything looks ornate at this point!

Herbflavor- the purpose would be either for glassware/China items (if I make it clear) or miscellaneous storage and paperwork if I make it a solid door. Next to the to-the-counter is open to the family room and dining area. As of now we have just standard uppers and that is the collection of junk corner ;). Moving fridge down down the run isn't an option - I like the placement for when I prep. The pantries at the end are the end of the aisle that opens to our garage area. The Windows are on the opposite wall facing the fridge. Basically the picture is done with the back to the window (and sink run) facing the refrigerator wall.

I agree -- get it changed. It would drive me nuts! Partly the appearance, and partly I'm sure I would always be reaching to open the lower ones the wrong way, especially if I'd just opened a top one! It was either the error of the KD (assuming there was one?) who needed to make sure the door swing (hinge side) and finished side were correct for your layout, or the error of the cabinet company (who may have done it wrong). I'm assuming your "cabinet guy" didn't make the cabinets, he's just installing them, right? If he can switch the doors (might have to drill new holes for hinges?), he should. Any associated cost (if new doors are needed, for instance) should be the KD's or the cab company's, not yours.

Thanks so much! I am so glad that I am not crazy. We did have a KD and she ordered the cabs, so it is probably a mistake from her or the cab company. The guy installing the cabs is pretty nice and he said that he would re-do the hinges for me. I'll definitely ask him to change it.

It's not so much the looks that would bother me (my kitchen was done 8 mos ago so you do develop perspective), but the fact the door would hit the decorative post to the right when you open it and I'd worry about them getting scratched up over time. You could either switch the door or adjust the hinges to avoid the door opening fully.

It looks like he installed the cabinets backward. In my experience, men will frequently try to tell you that it has to be that way just so they don't have to fix it. As long as fixing it won't interfere with anything else that has already been done, you should ask the cabinet installer to make the doors open the correct way. We had something similar in our old house, and it was very simple to remove the door and flip it around, but we had the old-style visible hinges. I don't know if there would be a problem with the new hidden hinges.

well, it all really depends on what you'll be doing in that area which is to the left of that base cabinet. Maybe you'd want it to open that way because it might hold items needed in that space.

Think about what you'll be putting in that cabinet and then decide to change it or not.

Ok, this may be just too obvious.

Are the two base cabinets on either side of the jutted out portion the same size?

Could you not just switch those two doors?

Drilling the hole for new hinges is not the issue. He could just flip the door upside down and be done with it. THE PROBLEM is now you have a hole where the knob is presently installed and it will have to be filled and painted.

As with Clg7067...I didn't notice it either until you pointed it out. However, now that I see it, it would probably bother me too!

Hopefully you can do as Raehelen mentioned...switch doors!
