What's your opinion on O'Brien? (Downton Abbey)

Do you think she could be the guilty party in the murder of Vera? She took great satisfaction in letting Vera know that Bates had returned to Downton. But later she had a guilty look on her face about how things turned out. Could she have felt bad about it and killed Vera to make amends to Bates and Anna? Or maybe Sir Richard is behind it all because of "the scandal"?

But we can't forget the soap incident.

And Thomas is such a snarky twit. But do I see some change in him, you think? One thing I don't understand is the friendship between O'brien and Thomas. What do you they have in common other than trouble-making?

Sheesh! As soon as I posted this I realized that this past Sunday's episode is still waiting for me to watch after I only caught a few snippets here and there. Maybe I'll have a few thoughts on my own questions after watching it. LOL

I think O'Brien may well have done in Vera.

The only changes I see in Thomas is desperation to get a job.

They are two bad, evil people who recognize a kindred spirit in the other person.

As mentioned above, Season 1 is available for streaming at pbs.org, at least for a little while longer. It is also available streaming on Netflix. As an aside, why is it that all the shows we like in our household are on Sunday night? I can only Tivo two at one time, and Downton unfortunately didn't make the cut. I'll have to see if I can find another time that it is shown.

I normally don't lurk on this side of Home Decorating, but I peeked in and saw this thread. It gives me a chance to vent about this series. I'm a die-hard Upstairs/Downstairs fan and I tried watching Downton Abbey when it first aired but did not enjoy it. Almost every scenario they came up with was done and done much better in Up/Dwnstrs. After saying this I continue to tune in now and then and am amazed at how the writers think that staff would be interacting with the upstairs as much as they do in this series. Maids being asked for and having their advice taken? Staff conversing and engaged with family members so casually? I don't think so. Besides, Richard is such a weak version of Mr. Bellamy. lol I do have one question for avid fans - who did Mary have her indiscretion with that caused all the scandal?

Bates is innocent. The prostitute was a former house maid at Downton when it was a hospital for Officers in WWI. She had a baby with one of the officers who would not acknowledge the child. The officer was killed in the war. His parents wanted the baby but not the mother who refused to give him up if she couldn't see the baby. The Lady who asked about her is Matthew Crawley's Mother.

Vee, sorry, I only just noticed your post to me about Death Comes to Pemberley. I don't watch Downton Abbey so haven't been following this thread. I can't remember what I said about the book either but the TV show looks interesting and I shall see if I can get an advance DVD download as I don't know when it will be shown here or it may have been on Foxtel satellite which I don't have. I don't get the time to watch everything I'd like on "Free to air" as it is! I have heaps of programs that sit in the recorder....

I think O'Brien feels guilt over the miscarriage and the trouble she brought to Bates with Vera. I think the show is trying to make us believe she knows something about Vera's murder. I suppose Sir Richard could have arranged it...Vera was really angry when she realized he had tricked her....hmmm how will we stand waiting for a year? If the story were a book, I would go buy it!

I finally got around to watching the last episode and have changed my mind about Thomas possibly having a decent side to him. Sunday night I missed the part about him taking Isis just so that he could "find" her later and gain favor with Lord Gratham. Actually thought he was concerned enough to actually go out looking for her. Ha! Should have known better.

Fun2BHere said she never considered Vera may not have committed suicide. Did I miss something else along the way that would have us believe it was suicide?

Vere said she would take him down with her..sooo??? Maybe it was a carefully planned suicide to put the blame on Bates. I wouldn't doubt that Sir Richard had it done either..he also threatened her.

Moonie 57, I believe that Vera's death was originally reported as suicide by taking poison. Only later, after the police discovered that Bates had purchased the poison and had been in a physical fight with her, did the police decided it was murder.

Thanks for clarifying, Fun2BHere. My phone rings its busiest on Sunday nights and I always miss something.

I've been re-watching season 1 on Netflix today.

I understand distraction, Moonie 57. I can only watch recorded shows because I'm always having to pause or stop and go back to see the rest later. LOL!

I'm new to the show but last night's episode had me hooked! The one question I came away with was Mary's trist with the Turkish man. Evidently, he died--during sex? did she kill him? Was Mary guilty before William only because she slept with the Turkish man or because she did him in? Sorry for knowing so little: I'll try to catch up!

No, Mary didn't kill him, but he did die in flagranti.
