I just finished Richard North Patterson's "Balance of Power" a couple of days ago.... a very interesting book and today I started David Baldacci's " Last Man Standing"

I think I'll read "Gone Girl" next. How do you like it, Raven?

I got the following book from the library:

"John Wayne: The Genuine Article"

It's just great, lots and lots of pictures. If you have a JW fan in the family, they would love this book. Would be a good Father's Day gift. I think it's $35 on Amazon, but it's a large book (not thick, but scrapbook size).

Well, tropical storm Lee has passed by and this morning when I walked outside at six, I turned right back around and grabbed a jacket! It's suppoed to be down in the low fifties tonight. That is unheard of and a good 10 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of year. Not complainting, though! I spent the morning tying up tomatoes. Sometime in the night after the heavy rain and wind, my Texas Tomato cages fell over with heavily loaded bushes. There doesn't appear to be any permanent damage though. It also knocked over my heavy wrought iron arbor/bench, which I would never have thought would happen. I guess the wind got under the Purple Hyacinth Bean vines and used it as a parachute. Again, no real harm done. I was reading over on the Vegetable Forum that parts of Michigan got frost last night. Oh, my. I think I'll stay with the ferocious heat we have here in the summer in payment for summer vegetables until Thanksgiving or so. Will be spending the day tomorrow planting pansy seeds!

I've decided to go with Prestige 54" to go over new 48" Capital Culinarian. That will be paired with a 1600CFM remote (roof mounted) blower). That's a bit over powered but I'd rather go over than under since I do a lot of stir-fry and saute. Also plan to do some grilling on the new range.

Just finished The daughters of Juarez by Teresa Rodriguez - true crime story of serial murder in Mexico - reccommended by a book buddy of mine and most interesting, I'm now almost finished another of a series of books written Jane Austen style (if you like Jane A., try one of the books written by Elizabeth Aston). The one I'm almost done is called "The Darcy Connection". I've enjoyed Aston's books and would say give them a try for anyone else who loves Austen. Then also in the process of reading pile are: Consuelo and Alva Vanderbilt by Amanda Stuart (an interesting read thus far), King, Kaiser, Tsar by Catrine Clay (another bio but a good rendering of the triangle between these powerful cousins)and finally just began "All the way Home" by David Giffels - I don't know what attracted me to this book, maybe the love of rebuilding falling down old houses and all the trials and problems solved with great industry and little expense. I formally only read one book at a time but now I find I have several on the go at all times just so I have a choice of what I'm in the mood for reading. DH who is a somewhat more picky reader finished "A spy at the heart of the third reich" by Lucas Delattre last night and said it was interesting but rather long winded in parts. Like most of you, I have a pile of reading to wade through and yet more books on request at the local library......so many books so little time - the story of my life. Budster.

We have a foolish Phoebe who persists in building her nest on the front porch every year. We have cats who sit on the porch most of the day. They pretty much ignore the Phoebe nest, which is up under the porch roof, about 8' above the porch floor, but when a baby bird falls from the nest, a cat gets it. Despite this, the Phoebe stubbornly insists on putting the nest in the same place every year. Every single time we open the front door, she flies away. I don't know how she ever sits on the eggs enough to hatch them. This has gone on for years. She is one stubborn Phoebe. Congrats on the SunGolds. Any tomato you grow yourself is going to be delicious and so worth the wait. We're still getting tomatoes from the first few early plants I bought on Feb. 1st. Our first ripe fruit from plants I raised from seed will be SunGolds but they are just barely beginning to turn, so it will be a few more days. After that, it seems likely the next ripe tomatoes will be Black Cherry, followed by a full-sized black tomato variety called Vorlon. The tomato plants purchased February 1st have done a great job of producing early fruit---we've harvested and eaten about 50 large tomatoes so far, which is the best early crop we've ever had. These plants have done so well that I didn't even get in a big hurry to put our home-grown tomato plants in the ground. There was no need to rush since the early plants were doing so well. I noticed today we have a jalapeno that is about ready to pick. It is pretty comical. It is on a Mucho Nacho plant I planted in the bed with those early purchased tomato plants in March. The plants have not necessarily grown very quickly, but did flower early and set fruit early. The one large jalapeno pepper is one-third the length of the entire plant. I saw it today and just shook my head---the plant kinda reminds me of a Charlie Brown christmas tree with its one lovely 'ornament' of a pepper that is just about big enough to pull the plant over onto its side. I'm tempted to go ahead and harvest the pepper just to relieve the plant from the burden of holding up a pepper that likely weighs more than the plant itself does.

Just finished The Supremes at Earl's All You Can Eat. I thought it was good. Have just started The Husband's Secret. The start is a little disjointed so the jury is still out. I thought Gone Girl was very weird, but I must admit, I couldn't put it down.

Just finished Stephen King's "11/22/63", all 849 pages of it. It was good but too long.

Now I am reading The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout. She wrote Olive Kitteridge. It's our book club choice.

I couldn't stand Gone Girl. I did not finish it.

I'm reading The Secret Place. It is the fiction version of the 1955 murder of Emmett Till, a 13 year old black boy visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi. The names have been changed, but basically it is the same as the true story.

Just finished the newest novel by J.A. Jance called, Moving Target. I read the newest J.D. Robb mystery earlier in the week. In between, I've been reading the enhanced versions of the books about making the first three Star Wars movies. They are easy to dip in and out of while reading other books.

I just finished my first Lisa Unger book, Fragile. I liked it enough to read it all the way through, but I wasn't excited by it. I guess so far I'd say the same about my current book, Anita Shreve's The Pilot's Wife. I don't love it (yet), but it has captured my interest.

Enjoying it, can't wait to get back to it and finish. My husband read it a while ago and I have been wanting to get to it, he enjoyed it too.
It's written in a diary format which is not the best, but it works.

edit for update! I finished reading it and I must say I thought it was going to go a different way and was not as happy with the ending as I was with the rest of the book. However I am happy I read it the book was very hard to put down at times.

Right now I'm hooked on Deborah Crombie's series about Kincaid and Gemma. I had read one, but thought I would like to start at the beginning of the series, so I got the first four on line from AbeBooks, for about $14.00, no shipping. I am also reading Island, by Alistair MacLeod, but I'm spacing myself on that one, as I am just enjoying immensely. It is a group of short stories, taking place at Cape Breton, off the coast of Nova Scotia. It is so beautifully written that I weep when I read it!

I recently read THIS JUST IN by Bob Shieffer, the journalist.
Non-fiction published in 2003. Very interesting and it kept my interest longer than a lot of fiction I have been reading.
I bought it a long time ago at our library sales for a quarter and it got stuck away.

Alisande, I just started listening to the audio version of Fragile - I get a lot of reading done in the car. I've also started reading Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series. Last week I finally tried to get into Gone Girl but just couldn't. Spent about an hour on it and it was a struggle to get interested so I gave up. Life is too short and there are too many other books I want to read!

grams 33----Sarahs Key is also my favorite book...not sure how many people have read it. We had it as a selection for our book club. And then I rented the movie from the library (black and white and mostly foreign language) and I loved it too!!!!!

We are continuing our Kate Atkinson kick with "Started Early, Took My Dog". Got hooked by "When Will There Be Good News", but didn't care AS much for "Life After Life".

I'm supposed to be starting "A Cold and Lonely Place" because we liked "Learning To Swim" -- both by Sara Henry. DH didn't care for "Cold and Lonely" as much as the "Swim" book, so I'm dragging my heels.

Chisue, I'm sorry to hear that! I've been enjoying anticipating reading A Cold and Lonely Place.

Kimberly, when I was working I got a lot of my reading done with audio books too. And maybe I will again, as my son gave me a device that plays MP3 files through my car radio. The audio book files can be downloaded from the library.

I too enjoyed Schieffer's "This Just In". Some of his "in the right place at the right time" experiences, as with the Kennedy assassination, were quite interesting.

I recently read "Twelve Years a Slave" and found it incredibly moving. It should be required reading for all school kids, maybe at the middle school level. (the Frederick Douglass book was widely used at one time, this one delivers the necessary punch concerning racism without the unneeded baggage that Douglass brings). The story is known because of the movie, the tale (among other things) graphically describes the treatment and lives of slaves in 1840s Louisiana. It was gut wrenching and incredibly sad, but the story needs to be told again and again.

The books is so old that it's in the public domain. Free or very cheap ebook and audio book versions are available.
