This just can't be happening again~

My brother was admitted to the hospital this afternoon with something wrong with his heart and can't get his breath....oh God, not again in my family~~~ I don't think I can even bring myself to walk back into a hospital right now, let alone see him hooked up to so many wires, etc.

My skimmer is totally different. So don't know if what I do would work for you. I know it works for me, but there will be bunches of people here on the forum that will disagree. I removed the door and in the slot where the door would go I put a piece of the black (coarsest) Matala mat Then I have 3 baskets that hold filter mats and then the pump is in the rear. My skimmer pulls anything that is floating in the pond and it catches in the Matala Mat, I just take it out and hose it off. I also take the baskets out with the other filter media and hose them off at least once a week sometimes more if I need to. With all the gunk I wash out of the mats, it has to be working. Then after the water goes through all this media it goes to the waterfall. I was having a problem with fish getting in the skimmer. And I actually cut a hole in the top of the skimmer so the frogs can get in there. A frog could never go through my pump and go through to the waterfall. My pump has a filter on it and nothing gets through there unless it is miniscule.And when I remove the baskets of filter media to wash it, I can see the bottom of the skimmer and if there was anything in there I could see it. Patti, In your first post you said the water goes in around a small opening around the skimmer pipe coming into the box. In one of my pump boxes I have 10 pipes coming in or going out. It is a fiberglass box that has been in the ground for 19 years. I could have used bulkhead fittings to go through the box walls but I did not. What I did was to take a small piece of plywood and put a hole that is little larger then the OD of the pipe. Then took a piece of liner about the same size of the plywood. Then on the outside of the box I silicone caulked the liner to the box over the pipe hole and put the plywood over that and ran bolts through the assembly in each corner of the plywood to clamp the liner to the box. Then ran the pipe through a small hole in the center of the liner and used a hose clamp to seal the liner to the pipe. After 19 years not one of the connections leak a drop of water. But I still have had that box flood 4 times. One time was when we had a freak storm and we got 16 inches of rain in 24 hours in a small area. The first 8 inches was not a problem but the last 8 inches caused flooding and I had a stream 4 inches deep running over the box. One time was when a lid on a primer pot broke and came off which drained about 2000 gallons of pond water in and out of the box. The other two times were caused by power failures and the small sump pump that I have in a 4" pipe connected to the bottom of box as a sump pit did not run. Mike

Jodie, I truly sympathize. I was in moving hell for two years as we made the move south for DH's work. It involved selling my house and wintersown gardens, moving first to a trailer in one state, then to a one-bedroom apartment in another state, and finally, to a new (to us) property. Here's what I did to take some of the sting out - first, I took cuttings of some of my favorite plants and rooted them. If you can do that, or better yet, pot up a few divisions into pots - think smallish here, but you can fit a lot of pots in a car (you don't need clothes. Clothes are replaceable). Seeds, of course, travel easily. Gather as many as you can from your gardens now - depending upon where you are moving from and to, you may be able to start a lot of the plants you have loved again. Container gardening is your modus operandi until you have a new 'permanent' place. For your personal self - adopt regular exercise if you haven't already. I was miserable during this time, and exercise is the #1 help for situational (as opposed to clinical) depression. To get some mojo back: if you can't face putting those babies in the ground, give them away! Or have a charity sale! I still have very few friends in my new place, but just a couple of days ago I took a pile of WS seedlings to my neighbor, and scored 3 lovely calla lilies that were overflow from her garden, and a good gardening conversation. Try as we might not to do it, we tend to base a lot of our security around home base - it was amazing to me how fast I felt better as soon as we bought a house. Yet I will never have the same sense of security as I did before, and that's actually a good thing. Besides, I have twice the yard to wintersow! :)(at least, for now...)

Bobby, you should let that lady know that she needs to keep her dog on a leash when outside her apartment - for his own protection. When I first moved in to my townhome, I had the garage door opened and was doing something in there, when an unleashed neighbor cocker spaniel charged my 6'4" husband INTO our garage! Husband looked down in amusement at this charging fluff ball, and told the neighbor dryly to keep her dog leashed. Which she did from then on. I laugh at it now, but what if there had been a child involved? Sheesh. Good thing neither the dog nor Jasper was harmed.

I'm so sorry, Phoggie. I sure hope you have some good news for us in the morning. It would be really hard for you to go to the hospital, but if you could go and see that he will be okay, it may make you feel better. But you would have to go with a positive attitude so you don't make him and family feel bad. Know what I'm trying to say? Whatever you decide, your brother is in my prayers.

I'm so, so sorry. I know you don't feel strong enough to deal with all this but it's amazing what we can do when we have to. The strength seems to come out of nowhere. ((((Mary)))).

Mary, I don't know what to say except I'm praying for you and your family. I truly hope that your brother will be o.k. You will get through this. Like others have said, it's amazing what we can actually do when we have to.

maybe making a quick trip, so bro know you're there, then go home, and rest...at least you'll have seen him for yourself, and won't worry as much...

or do like i do and take an extra long shower and pretend the water is washing away all the stress...now that works wonders...water has been my stress reducer for years...

I just visited with my SIL and she said that DB is resting now that they have taken off some of the tubes they had him connected to. He has A-fib and a rapid heart rate...they are increasing some meds and hoping it will stay stable. He is in good spirits....but laughing and kidding are his way of coping.

I have not gone down....it is a 2 hour drive each way...and he is trying to get all the rest he can....but as everyone knows, the hospital is not the place to get any rest~~

Thanks for your good wishes....but at the time it happened, all I could think of was that it was my DH all over again....and that is still so fresh in my mind.

I get along pretty well during the week, but oh my the week-ends are so terribly lonely....but grief is something that everyone has to work through at their own pace.

Gosh, I'm so sorry you have to deal with this emotional difficulty right on top of your husband's passing. Are you trying to stay fairly busy (especially on the weekends,) or is it still too difficult? Each in her/his own time. I'm glad to see they have a handle on your db's condition--sounds like it's not as dire as it first was and you can bet they won't let him go until he's very stable and on the right meds. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

DH did not get to come home as they hoped...they are taking more tests. He is in a "small town hospital" and a cardiologist comes from over 100 miles away ONCE a week. He doesn't want to go to a different hospital....stubborn man! Personally, I do think he had a heart attack...maybe only a mild one, but he had all of the symptoms that DH had when he had his, only not nearly as severe.
