the symbol in the title is from the Character Map and I made by by holding down the Alt key and keying in 0176. It comes up as the degree symbol, but when I preview it changes to a little square thingee and when I post it comes up really wierd...
I know it has shown up in several posts ... is it when you use the character map?
Things go all goofy when you copy/paste from other websites too, at times. The software behind this site doesn't like some of the Word embedded stuff either...that is why you sometimes see a post with all the commas replaced by some strange symbol.
If you want to use symbols on this board, use plain old HTML.
Degree symbol is & # 176 ; but all run together.
Gives you this: 100 degrees comes out as 100ð
(You need degrees of heat in cooking, so is too!!!)
i didn't notice this happening prior to the recent shut down which they said would get rid of those "garden gnomes" .... looks like another one slipped in.
This is some new bug. I think I noticed it for the first time yesterday. Everybody's accent marks and fractions are messed up. Years ago I used to see this in my own posts from Firefox, but not from Safari. Now they both look the same.
What browsers are the rest of you seeing it in?
In general, if you see weird marks on any page you can go to "View" (that's what it's called in the Mac, at least) and change the "character encoding" for that page. Usually that clears it up. But not now.
It depends too on the character encoding. Go up to the top of your page and click on VIEW and from the drop down menu try changing between UNICODE and WESTERN or other options. If a page has been written in a different encoding, the symbols will change.
It is a new bug that showed up in the last couple of days. I have not changed anything on my end, yet recipes I have posted many many times over the last decade now show up with problems.
I've always had problems copying and pasting recipes from here with the fractions showing up as question marks when I paste them into my word processor. But, I have a strange word processing system - Appleworks, which I hate, but we can't afford Microsoft Word, and I don't know that I really want it. I used to wish people would just type out the fractions, but I did that the other day at work on the pc there, which has word, and it automatically changed the typed out fraction to one that looked more, well, like a real fraction. Oh, well, the machines seem to think they know what we want better than we do.
As for the recent problems, I've noticed them too, and been confused by them. I've also noticed in some threads, (not this one, though) a blank space between the last post and the box to type in our message. What's up with that?
As I said above, the changing the character encoding did not work last night. But since it worked today for Pam, I tried again, and .... very strange results.
Changing from Western to Unicode fixed Deb's post about Annie, but the chocolate thread still was messed up. I had to change that back to Unicode to make "Hermès" and other accents right! P.S. And back again, to make it look right in preview! So Garden Web is no longer imposing a uniform encoding on everything, I guess?
I had that happen to a recipe that I copied off of one thread and pasted onto another Forum. And, of course, it only showed up once I actually submitted it to the new thread and not on the preview. Weird!
