Removing old backsplash mastic/tset. Prep for new tile. Help!

We've removed our old countertop tile (set in a thick mud base with lath) in preparation for granite coming on Monday. The backsplash tiles in the range area along with the single row of tile and wallpaper under cabinets are down.

Now I'm left with mastic/thinset that stayed behind when the tiles came down. Is there an easier way to get the stuff off than with a hammer and chisel? Lots of wallboard damage too as I chisel it away. Do I need to worry about this and do any sort of wall prep to the damaged and torn areas before retiling?

Trying to get this done before the new granite is in the way!
