pendant lighting question??

Hello!!! I just hung a beautiful fixture over my kitchen table. LOVE it! My problem is my island. My table is only 3x5 oval and fixture is fairly large (26 in) but works because of its visual weight and my open floor plan. I have a small island, 3x4 that is right next to the table. I'm trying to decide if hanging 2 matching 8 inch pendants from the same collection is way too many fixtures in one space? Would love opinions!! Thanks so much!

It might be helpful to post a photo that better shows the spacial relationship between the island and table (like maybe from the other side of the half wall).

That said, I will offer that in my former house I had pendants over the island and a light over the breakfast table that were from the same collection. If you're concerned that the pendants you're considering are too busy, you could certainly go with a very simple stick pendant with glass bowl as long as the stick is in the same finish as your light.

There will be 8" wall space available on each side of the mirror, so yes there is room for a narrow sconce. However, the sconces would be 62" apart! My thought was that if I used pendants I could also have one hanging in the middle so that the 3 pendants would be only 30" apart and both sinks would have side lighting. Not sure if I should use pendants with CFL bulbs or ???

Welcome, Bellejack! I'm no expert, but we have a kitchen island that is 6 feet long with a seating area on one side, all the same level because I wanted lots of workspace. Over the island we have 3 low-voltage pendants: one centered and the other two split the difference...in other words, 18 inches apart. Don't know if that's what a lighting designer would spec, but it's what our architect planned in our lighting layout. Sorry, no pics. You will need to think about what height to place those lights, eventually, with the two different levels on the bar. Also, consider whether you have other pendants in the adjacent rooms...too many hanging "things" can be distracting, IMHO.

I can't speak to how it will look, but I do know that when you have pendants near a fan, if they are on a cord, as opposed to a rod, they will sway in the breeze the fan creates. Just something to think about. Also, the remodeling forum gets more traffic than lighting so you may want to cross-post.

Thanks for all of the input!!! It sounds like a pendant may not be in my future. I loved the idea of it but as I was looking at it more, I was worried that there might be too much going on there. I was having second thoughts and wanted to get opinions from all of you. Holly-Kay: we are planning on changing out the chandelier above the table to a bronze finish to tie in with the darker wood and fireplace things. But I see how a pendant above the sink might be too much. Snookums2: we removed the dark screens and it looks much better. I can't wait for everything to get started! I thought about tiling to the ceiling but wasn't sure since our cabs don't go to the ceiling. We are going to add a taller crown but nowhere near ceiling height. That may be the subject of another post. Nosoccermom: great idea about hanging a balloon. I don't have photoshop but maybe I could cut and paste something there and post again. Thanks for the suggestions!
