Tomato powder - organic?

Hi folks, I was going to bring up a previous tomato powder thread, but couldn't find it. I did buy a 17oz container of tomato powder from Emergency Essentials, kept it in the freezer, and just finished it. I have been trying to go organic since I had a cancer scare a little over a year ago, and I figure every little bit helps, but I don't think that company sells an organic version. I found one on-line, but it has guar gum, and I'd rather buy a pure product. Does anyone use/have a source for organic tomato powder? It is great stuff, I'm surprised it has never made its way into any stores.

Frontier makes a certified organic tomato powder that I've used in the past. Currently, we're growing our own organic heirloom tomatoes and dehydrating ourselves. But, Frontier is a very good product. Amazon sells it in one pound packages.

I agree with you - tomato powder is an awesome product that should be more widely available in regular grocery stores.

Thanks a lot triciae. That is actually the one I found as well. When I magnified the ingredients it lists organic tomato and guar gum. I get hives from some artificial ingredients - don't know exactly which ones except annatto color and natural flavor for sure, but was a little iffy about the guar gum?

I grow a mix of F1 hybrids and open pollinated varieties. Most are grown for production + flavor, some are grown because they stay small + production + flavor. simply selling something of little value just as the manufacturers of synthetic fertilzers do? OK kimmsr, we can get into a HUGE discussion here. How you can possibly come to the conclusion that synthetic fertilizers are of "little value"? They have been helping to feed an ever expanding global population for the last 70 years or so and doing a dang good job of it! I realize this is an organic gardening forum and I realize that you swear by the doctrine that compost should be the only source of plant nutrients one's garden will even need but that is simply not the way the world works. Plants do not care from what source their nutrients are derived - from compost, a packaged organic fertilizer, out of a MiracleGro sprayer or a bag of Scotts - it's all the same to them. YOU may deem kelp meal unnecessary but not everyone is exposed to the same sort of materials or has the same sort of gardening situation and many must obtain desired organic matter from whatever source is at their disposal. And whether YOU consider it 'hokum' or a 'magic elixar' or not is your choice (and I challenge you to present any reputable source that confirms that belief). There is certainly enough scientific evidence to support the nutritive value of kelp and it is a valuable organic soil amendment for those that choose to use it. No one is necessarily advocating it has any 'magic' properties - just that it is a rich, organic nutrient source and a great organic soil amendment.

There is an insect repellant you can make by whizzing one medium onion, 1 garlic bulb, and a tablespoon of hot pepper flakes with enough water to cover in your blender letting that steep for at least 24 hours and then straining that mixture and adding 1 cup of that to 1 gallon of water and spraying that around. That is an insect repellant not a pesticide, it does not kill insects. Garlic powder does not seem to work in this mixture. Some chili powders may, depending on how hot they are. Which pesticide you might think about using depends on which insect you need to control and at which stage of life they are. Some are effective in very early larval stages while others might be effective when used to control adults. However, any pesticide that will control adult insects are very broad spectrum poisons that will also kill beneficial insects.

So, basically what you guys are saying is potting soil is sterile and needs help with things like manure or compost. It sounds like next year I have make up my own planting soil mixture for containers then. You can certainly go that route if you wish and you'll find several recipes for container mixes over on the Container Gardening forum here. Since you are using containers rather than in-ground beds, that will be the best forum source for info for you. But none of those recipes will contain dirt (soil). Some compost and composted manure, fine but soil isn't used in containers because it compacts, drains poorly, and the roots rot. Not to mention that is can be a source of damp-off, pests, and disease problems. Experienced container gardeners use only soil-less mixes in containers to avoid those problems. And it isn't that those mixes are necessarily "sterile", they aren't. There are many good container mixes that come with mycorrhize added to them. Pro-Mix is one that is often recommended on several of the forums here. I use it myself. But that still isn't going to solve the problems of nutrient leach. Containers require frequent, regular supplemental nutrients, regardless of what you mix into the container to begin with since the roots are "contained" unlike in a garden and the nutrients wash out when you water unlike in a garden. That, plus maintaining consistent moisture levels, are the biggest drawback to growing in containers. How much of a problem it is all depends on the size of the container you are using and you didn't mention how large your container is. Take a look at Jaybo's pics linked below. -Once you open the container, especially if it's a #10 can, place it in smaller containers with airtight lids - pint and 1/2-pint canning jars work best for me. That way you aren't exposing large amounts to moisture each time you open the container to use it.

-I place moisture absorbing silica packets (from supplements I take) in the top of the container. The silica gel packets can also be purchased (check amazon.com) and you can top off each jar not in use with these packets.

-Avoid moisture. When using from the container, get in and get out as quickly as possible. Don't leave the lid off for any length of time.

-Store the in-use container in the dry confines of your refrigerator. Due to the frost-free feature on refrigerators, they maintain low humidity levels at all times. If you don't store it in a refrigerator, make sure the container has an air-tight lid and slip the container inside a zip-lock bag for another layer of moisture-proof storage.

-Store the in-use tomato powder in a container with very little air space. The more air space there is in the container, the more moisture it can harbor each time it's opened.

-If it does start to lump, you can grate the lumps on a box grater or a microplane.

No problem triciae - maybe I should order it from you! Thanks a lot olychick - 5 pounds is more than I wanted to order at one time, but since I keep it in the freezer, maybe I'll just get that one and divide it up as grainlady suggests - might last me a few years!
