How do you store your scarves????

Wondering how others store their scarves.

I am talking about the large ones, not the smallish, thinner summery ones!

I have a wooden hanger that has holes in it that I thread my lighter scarves thru just like this one below ~ see link :)

However my larger thicker, winter scarves that need to preferably be folded (to minimize creasing) seem to end up messy in drawers.

Interested to hear how you store them.

I use those stacking decorative hat boxes. Scarves go in the largest ones, hats in the middle, gloves and mittens on the top.

I live in Iowa -- those are necessities -- and lots of them!!

I actually use those scarves for table runners, and because I don't want to iron them every time before I use them, I put them on open pants hangars which are hung in my front hall coat closet.

I use a lot of linen placemats and it is very vexing to want the kind that's on the bottom of the stack. No matter how careful you are, you can easily wrinkle a whole pile of them. My solution was to design a cabinet with doors that open to reveal a bank of very close together pullout shelves, so each kind is stored in its own stack and I can peel off what I need in a jiff. Below that I have several deeper (meaning the sides are higher) pullouts which are for napkins. I have some dividers on those to keep those stacks from falling over. As we only use cloth napkins, I need a lot of storage for them. HTH, Molly

Everyone, thanks for these useful ideas and insights. You guys are really creative. Pretty much every bit of my jewelry is costume; I only have one nice ring and it's already in the safety deposit box across town. So no theft worries. I'd be sad to lose my costume stuff, but none of it is irreplaceable. Les, your suggestions are just so spot-on re my style: would you please come out to visit and just redo my entire house while you're here? (Bring me some Frango Mints, too?) I hadn't even known those plain, mirrored jewelry cabinets existed. What a great idea. Anyone seen one with Art Nouveau or Lloyd Wright -style detailing? (: (well, a girl can dream...) Igloo, if I see any antique silverware boxes out here in the sticks, I'll emulate you. Love that idea too. You guys are great!

[Bellaflora, that's my bed under the window. It's a walnut Empire-style daybed with scrolled ends from about 1830, and it's only 24 inches wide, but I've been sleeping on it since 1977. I was just out of college & just starting my first job when I spotted it at an antique show, and the $240 it cost me seemed like a fortune. I had to eat macaroni-&-cheese for weeks to repair the damage to my bank account, but, hey, it was worth it. The brand-new furniture that my pals were buying during the same period all went to Goodwill--or a landfill--a long time ago, but I figure my bed has at least another 50 years left to go. Anyway, the writer who came to my apartment to interview me for the O at Home article had the same question you did--"Where's your bed?" When I told her I was sitting on it, she paused, glanced at her hands, and then said, "Well, it's a really nice piece. But...what do you do... how do...what if you sometimes want to...um...have...a guest?" I just laughed & told her "I don't have those kind of guests."]

If you want a glass cloche, Libbey has one with a wood base (picture from Amazon). I have a similar one with a glass pedestal for cakes. The advantage to Libbey is a truly clear glass dome (i.e., color adjusted) of good quality (not too thin or thick) and decent price. I'd think you could cut on the base, if you didn't go wild. Or you could add a round of plywood skin. That said, I have a fancy British enamelled bread tin that matches my cookie tin and cake tin. The latter two are lovely. The bread doesn't keep well in the bread box. At all. So I hope this works for you as well as it does for Birdstalker.

I have one of those plastic shoe holders hanging on my coat closet door & keep those woolen scarves in the pockets. The really big ones are in a plastic zipper bag like mattress pads come in & are on the shelf in the coat closet.

A hanger thing in the closet. The top is a conventional hook that goes over the closet pole, then there is a straight down rod with "arms" sticking out to each side every four inches or so. If I'm feeling precise I can fold the scarf neatly over an arm, or just sling it over an arm if not. Only takes up an inch of the closet and holds a lot of scarves.

clink ~ I love the idea of the hat boxes! Sounds very organized! Living in Iowa you would certainly need them handy :) I am 'down under' and it gets cold (admittedly not for a great length of time!), enough to need coats, scarves & gloves.

clair ~ I too had thought of using them as a table runner!!! They are so pretty with gorgeous colors that it would be nice to display them! I have those open pants hangers in dh & ds wardrobes!! May have to 'borrow' a couple ;-)

marti8a ~ I like your idea about the over the door shoe organizer! We dont have coat closets 'down under', yet could easily hang them over a bedroom door!
Have only recently discovered these wonderful organizers!!
I have one hanging on my dd door holding her hair things, socks, underwear, perfume etc, all easy to see and reach for in the morning when time is precious!
