You might try to add a citrus juice - like lime, and fresh herbs.

Lemon or lime juice, even some orange juice is good. I usually put a shot of Louisiana Hot Sauce in there, some Italian Seasoning and some garlic powder or salt and sometimes some Worsteshire or Teriyaki sauce. And of course fresh ground black pepper or at least lemon pepper on the salad.

Question for Al mix for a lemon tree
Q

I found I can get all the ingredients on ebay individually. Then I found a place that will mix stuff for you, and they don't have the granite however, but the turface and fir bark they have. Now, I wonder what would be most ideal for a lemon tree, now I can see this huge menu of choices. I would like it if they would screen it for me, as long as I am spending big bucks to have someone else mix it for me. I bet I could have saved my tropical Cristo Rey Rhododendron if I had potted it up the winter we got snow in San Francisco. But, I was afraid to pot it up, since it did so poorly in traditional potting soils. It needed good drainage. Here is a link that might be useful: orchid things

Tomato Lovers

Jan, a really good way to eat tomatoes is in panzanella..an old country Tuscan salad. It's a meal in itself and is really good on a hot summer's day. We have it all the time. Just take a loaf of Italian bread that's a day old. Tear it up into bite sized pieces and toss that with some olive oil, salt and pepper and minced garlic. Put that on a baking sheet in the oven for a few minutes until the bread gets crisp. Cut up 4 or 5 tomatoes into wedges into a large bowl, slice a red onion, and add that plus some basil and chunks of fresh mozzerella ( I've made it without the cheese and it's good too) and black olives if you like them. Add the bread and mix all that together with about a 1/4 cup olive oil and a couple of tablespoons of balsamic vinegar. Let it sit for awhile and the bread will start to soak up the tomato juices. It's sooooo good. The Italians sure know what to do with tomatoes.

Any Rope Maintenance Recipes ?Help?
Q
Comments (6)
Why wait till they break? it's alot easier to replace them before they break Plus rope is cheap. I suggest routinely replace them. real ease with rope still intact. Just remove you front cover. Pull rope out clamp down the spool, cut knot on old rope, remove handle. Measure new rope lenght, install handle, thread through spool winder. tie knot and release holding clamp. Wait too long and the coil spring could come unwind when the rope breaks. Now, if that happens it's really hard and only a few can fix it on some models. Better IMO not to wait for disaster.

potting medium recipes needed

My mix, and I use the word "my" loosely, as it just means the mix I've concocted and use, it 2 parts #2 cherry stone grit, 1 part turface, and 1 part red lava pebbles. They are all sifted at 1/16" on the low end. For tropicals i use different ratios, but for succulents, this mix is producing some very healthy feeder roots, like I've never experienced. If I were to add compost or standard peat potting mix, it would simply fill in the space between the particles, and eventually break down and plug up the mix. Right now I have a mix that lasts forever and maintains it's structure as long as the plant's roots take to fill the pot to capacity. In my experiences, organic ingredients in pots only work short term, due to decomposition. As they break down, the overall structure changes, so you have no type of consistency, and eventually you get a total collapse. This can work ok for annuals in the north with our short growing season, but is not good for long term plants. Some ingredients are better/worse than others, for example, pine bark. While organic, it takes a long time to break down compared to peat moss, so it works good in the gritty mix, assuming it's screened correctly. I guess it comes down to personal preference and trial & error. My trials and errors have steered my away from organic anything in containers, and since doing so, I finally feel like I am in complete control, and not at the mercy of Mother Nature, at least in regard to my potting mix. The general rule is three parts oil, one part vinegar(or lemon juice). I have one of those Good Seasons shaker bottles. I don't bother buying the seasoning packets anymore, just add salt and pepper and any other spices I like-gaerlic, oregano, basil, etc.

Doesn't it depend too on the type of vinegar you use??? Just wondering.

Mustard's important to use, too. Not just for flavor, but because it's an emulsifier

Here is the Italian dressing recipe I use.
I package of Good Seasons Salad dressing mix
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
3 Tbs. water
Shake these together
Add 1/2 cup olive oil.
Shake, refrigerate and serve.
You just substitute balsamic vinegar for plain vinegar and olive oil for regular vegetable oil

Are you using Virgin Olive oil? Makes a big difference.

Also, Balsamic or red wine vinegar .

Try red wine, but the biggest hint is try adding some sugar... makes a huge difference and tastes great!

I use jannies recipe of 3 to 1 oil & vinegar. I prefer balsamic vinegar and evoo. Whisk it together just before pouring over salad. I like it plain but you can add the spices you like. This also makes a great dipping sauce for bread sticks.

Or use cider vinegar, but don't use white vinegar. Here is a honey mustard dressing I make for DH

Honey Mustard Dressing

1/3 cider vinegar
2/3 c. oil (safflower, olive, veg, canola is what I have used
1 1/2 T. mustard
1 1/2 T. honey
1 T. parmesean cheese
1 t. oregano

Optional: horseraddish to taste! With what we just made, I think I will be cutting back on how much I use. Last batch of horseraddish wasn't very hot. This new batch, started 45 minutes ago, is POTENT!!!! My eyes are still burning!

use a bit of honey...If I use balsamic...I don't use a sweetener because the kind I use is naturally a bit sweet.

I like fresh garlic well minced or shallot.

And I agree..a bit of mustard especially grainy or dijon goes a long way for flavor and mouth feel.
