Porch Pillar Base Trim Keeps Shrinking

Arapaho-Rd

A carpenter built a front porch pillar for me that sits atop a stone base that is about waist high. The pillar is made of natural wood and is trimmed at the top and bottom with cove molding. It shrunk the first time he installed it - gaps at the corners of the molding where the ends meet. He used caulk, but it pulled apart from that. He just came two weeks ago and re-did the entire trim. It is shrinking again and splitting apart at the corners of the molding. What is the problem and how do I fix it? Is he using the wrong materials? Thank you.
