Asafoetida?

I'm contemplating making a new recipe for potato/cauliflower curry that is in this month's Appeal magazine. (For my fellow British Columbians, this is the free magazine that Save-On Foods sends out.)The base of the curry is a puree of garlic, ginger and onions, which would be very flavourful. It calls for an spice/herb called asafoetida. When I googled it, this is the definition I got:

"Asafoetida's English and scientific name is derived from the Persian word for resin (asa) and Latin foetida, which refers to its strong sulfurous odor. Its pungent odor has resulted in its being called by many unpleasant names; thus in French it is known (among other names) as Merde du Diable (Devil's Sh*t); in some dialects of English too it was known as Devil's Dung, and equivalent names can be found in most Germanic languages."

Is this something that you want the taste of in your dish?

Has anyone used it? The definition certainly makes me leary of using it, but now I'm curious. Tell me about your asafoetida experiences!

Jane
