Tip, Antique Floor, the cheap way

Use standard kiln dried spruce lumber of 2 X 6 or greater, plane one side, and lay face down, no underlay needed if max spacing is 2 ft. You can spline on the edge but not necessary.

Drawbacks.

Time for curing. You have to let it air dry in a cool shady place for at least a year to let it shrink width wise. It should be stacked on a level floor with 3/4in spacers at every 18inches between layers of board. Make sure you have spacers directly under the spacer above and ensure you have spacers at the very end of the planks. Place a load of very heavy cement blocks on a sheet of plwood on the top of the stack.

Advantages:

Stronger and harder than pine when dry, more pronounced lovely grain, and takes stain as well as pine. A floor of 1-1/2inches thick at 16inch centers makes a solid dance floor too, guaranteed no bounce. Reasonably well priced and 11 inch boards readily available.

When we did our floor, w/ deck screws plugged for added accent, our 2 X 6 boards came to 450$ for an 18 X 18ft living room.
