Can you stand another post about paint (pic included!)

I'm going to get some paint samples today, but I'm wondering where to start. We will not have a backsplash. Floor will be wood. Perimeter is the QS oak cab w/ soapstone. Island is the slate blue w/ marble. We don't want our kitchen to have too many colors, so we were thinking something neutral or a color that pulls everything together. No backsplash, so the paint is important.

I think you are going to have a gorgeous kitchen and I keep watching your posts. You may be creating my inspiration kitchen. I'm not sure how dark or the tones of your soapstone - are you going to oil it? Also what colors are in adjoining rooms? Maybe a soft slate blue gray would tie things together if your soapstone is going to be dark - black. I'd take the blue door with me if I was you, but you probably already planned doing so. Also, have you looked at the myperfectcolor.com website?

thanks! i hope my kitchen doesn't disappoint (especially since our budget is completely busted).

I am definitely going to oil the soapstone.. it is a very dark variety with some white veining. I thought I'd buy some little BM samples and paint either the wall or poster board to see what works.

We love blue-grey... that might be a good idea.

So we finished our new raised vegetable beds and thought I would update this thread. We ended up having only enough soil from our old beds to fill two of the new raised beds. We also used all of our store of organic matter, which wasn't a lot and compost dug out of a passive compost pile that had been there for over a year which we used to fill the bottom half of those two beds with the soil from the old vegetable beds for the top half. Then we had three beds still to fill! I seriously considered making up a mix using pine bark fines etc., but reading along, what jumped out at me was the percentage of organic matter that is recommended in your native soil. In our old vegetable beds, I added a lot more organic matter, maybe up to 50% and the soil would shrink back and I'd have to keep adding more every year. So, in the end I decided to at least check to see if I could find some 'organic' native soil to purchase. I called around for recommendations and someone did direct me to someone who might have what I needed. And they did. They also added a small percentage of organic compost and had amended the soil with organic amendments, like alfalfa meal and worm castings etc. It sounded like just what I wanted. So we had them deliver it and filled the remaining beds. I will be interested to see how the produce does this year and compare the old soil we had, with the new soil. The new soil is also clay soil, and it doesn't drain as well as my own soil or the soil from the old vegetable beds with all the organic matter, that water just runs through. This new soil, the water puddles on the top for a little bit, but a layer of mulch slows it down enough. I hope to amend the new soil, either with cover crops or mixed lawn clippings and chopped leaves in the fall. So that's the end of that story. It's only Antique Rose Emporium that sends Otto as EvS. With ARE, it's not that they have mistakenly sent you the wrong rose, if they send you Otto for EvS, that's just what they call EvS. Some of us think they have those two roses mis-identified, that's all. I think too that it's probably a hybrid musk, like Cornelia, as lucretia has said a couple of times. It does look like Cornelia to me, too, assuming those first blooms are representative of the rose. It's not unusual for a vendor to pick up the wrong rose and send it, as they're probably all in alphabetical order in their greenhouses or storage areas. "C" - "E" Also, the cane growth doesn't look like what I remember Otto being. The leaves are sure not EvS.

My Francee is huge. It's probably 48" wide in a pot! I got it in 2009 as a mistake. It was supposed to be Wide Brim, so they sent me another Wide Brim. It's an incredible, plain Jane hosta. It grows quickly, looks neat throughout the year, good substance and seems not to be susceptible to Anthracnose. I think it leaped again this year. Sometimes, newer is not necessarily better. bk My Francee last year

:D (my big happy grin!!) Okay, so can I email somebody pictures to post for me? I just use FB as my picture hosting site now. No more photobucket. We had a great time in Boston for the long Labor Day weekend. It was too short notice to find somebody to watch 6 kids while they're in 5 different schools, so we'll take a real honeymoon in the Spring (thinking Costa Rica!) Still living separately for another month or so until the house is done (it ain't easy! lol)

Really the best thing to do is borrow a fan book from Benjamin Moore or some other top brand. Bring it home, go through it, and write down every color that you love for the space. If you have more than, say, five, go through the ones you love again and edit out the ones you love less than the best.

Bring home samples or quarts, paint large patches on your walls, and live with them for a week, checking them in different lights: overcast, bright sun, twilight, lots of electric lights, dim electric lights, etc.

You can also make your own color if you find a color you like that's too dark or intense. If you want to mix a color you like better than any on the cards, count how many spoonfuls (disposable spoon) of each color you're combining, and be sure to paint a bit of it on a paint sample card (get them at the paint store--they have a true white finish similar to primed drywall). Take your sample card to a good paint store and they can use a computer to analyze and reproduce it. The formula is a backup, to know what you did if the store version isn't 100% right.

Having said all that, I'd go with a slightly buttery cream color. The yellowish undertone will make the blue island pop, marry well with the warm tones of the wood, and will be fresher and less stark than browner or grayer neutrals.

BTW, once you have your color sample you can get it made in any paint formulation (i.e., any brand). In your case, however, with no backsplashes, I'd recommend you invest in the best quality paint you can get. The big difference between paints is the binder. Poor quality paints, and paints mixed with water, don't bond as well to the wall. That could be important if you're wiping it often.
