Storage of pot lids on the wall

I have some copper pots and I'd like to store the lids where they can be seen and are easy to grab. I don't like slipping them onto the handles because I don't use the lids as often as I use the pots. Hanging them off a pot rack means they would be hard to get. I was thinking of making a narrow shelf with edges along the front and sides where the lids would go, their tops resting against the wall. Has anybody done this or seen it?

Pottery Barn has a shelf that is similar to this idea but doesn't have closed ends and is deeper than I imagined.

As long as you have the wall space, I think that would work nicely. A carpenter or DIYer could make a shelf for a lot less than the one at Pottery Barn. It would only have to be 3 or 4 " deep unless you put the lids in a double row. Make sure to show us pictures if you go ahead.

You could also just pad out a finished piece of wood (about a 1x2) with standoffs so the gap behind the piece was about 1 to 1.5".

The problem with your idea and my idea is THE WALL where the lids are leaning and/or sliding. If you tile it, or perhaps put a metal plate on the wall behind it?

Individual plate holders? The only other thought is wire baskets attached to the wall. So you can see the lids, but they can't hit the wall.

I think that the one Birkie refers to will work for me. I have pot drawers to the right of the cook top, but under the cooktop is just a sink base that is not very organized. I like the low tech solution from IKEA because its easy to reach the lids if its attached to the inside of the cabinet door. Today we are trying out a lid organizer from BBand B which I placed in the pot drawer off to one side and that might work also.

It could still have been used to cover up an old flue not used anymore. My house is nearly two hundred years old, and not much was found in the walls, as they're solid brick, lol, but over the fireplace in the kitchen, up near the ceiling where there was lathe and plaster a bunch of corn cobs fell out when we were remodeling. Yes, this is an old farmhouse, and no.....I don't think humans stuck them up over the plaster ceiling. I have a hunch it was rodents, and extremely large ones. Also the lids may have just slid there and not really been placed in the wall, if for any reason a way had been opened at one time for repairs. I found a castor oil bottle from a company I know went out of business in 1871 in the dirt under my kitchen when we yanked out the floors to replace the joists. This was in the days before central heat or electric and the only thing I can think of opening into the floorboards would have been a pipe from the spring to a pump in the kitchen.

laughable - I'm not Chicago Bob, but we had considered something like that at one point when it looked like I might not be able to have my 3rd (top) drawer under my induction cooktop at a usable height...we would have had the front represent as the two drawers, but part of the front would have been covering an area of the cooktop clearance, then the drawer in a drawer would have been just below that...putting the drawer within a drawer would have yielded me the storage area that I needed, even if it was a bit less convenient. If you have a choice though, I would be less likely to do the drawer in a drawer. As it is, my top drawer front for my cooktop cabinet is 6" high (lining up with the rest of the top drawers in the kitchen) and will have a drawer depth of about 2 1/2"...enough for me to put flatter utensils (or some people would put lids) in that area.

Mine are stored as Lars said. The lid is on the pan upside down, And they are stacked. Always have the right lid for the pan that way. My Corning ware is stored the same way. Can't say as I've had any problems with breakage, either. So Dcarch must be right, about them being made of tempered glass. I happen to like glass lids. Have never had a problem seeing through them. Even when they are covered with water droplets, One can still tell how well the contents are simmering, Or sizzling, as the case may be. Rusty

I have a stainless backsplash over my range with a copper bar/rod (actually just copper plumbing pipe) mounted horizontally about 1'' in front of the b/s. You place the lid behind the rod & the handle acts as a stop & keeps the lid suspended in place - and they're always close to where you need them. You could also do this along other areas of your backsplach.

I DIYed a rack for displaying antique plates that would work fine for this use. The key is to make it very narrow, with a front tall enough so that the plates can't tip forward and out of the rack [I actually made the front short, with a gap then a dowel so more of the plate face would show].

The plates are still easy to access, they come right up and out. But they're perfectly secure, they've been through a couple earthquakes without falling.

I have an Ikea lid rack that mounts on the wall. Very cheap, very effective, surprisingly sturdy and not terribly unattractive once it's full of lids. Link shows one similar to what I have, although I think mine holds fewer lids. I also use it to hold round cork hotpads.
