My doc appt yesterday and iron pill ?.....

Okay she said that they are blood clots that have formed and that they are going down but to me they ar enot but she said since I see them everyday I probably don't think that they are....also I have had some bleeding and 2 days ago terrible lower back pain ( now remember even though I was a mess inside) I didn't suffer from pain before my periods....now I get pain...she said taht is from a blood clot in my tummy dissolving and she is suprised that I have just now started to feel pain from it....she also said taht as it dissolves that it will gush out after walking around a bit...so back to pads til this part is over...dang it...but know their is a light at the end of this tunnel.......Okay now to my iron ? I forgot to ask yesterday and she was off today...so will call back tomorrow...but anyways since my blood was soooo great the last time (a week ago yesterday) do you all think I can cut back on my iron pills...??? I am taking...4 pills aday....1 Niferex-150 a day and 3 times aday taking Ferrous Sufl 325 mg. I think I can cut back to just the Niferex..which is the 1st iron they had me on til the hospital stay......Thanks Stacy

Stacy, please don't make any changes until you talk to your doctor. Probably would not be a problem, but you don't want it to be your fault if something did occur. You know how docs CYA, you need to do the same. lol

Sue is right - the medical team has you on a plan of recovery, and you should check with the doctor before adding or removing any medication or supplement.

If you are questioning the need for any of your medications, please just give them a call - I hope you are able to get off all your meds and get your vitamins and minerals from your food.

I am so glad this discussion is on here! I am 52, and was just told to go off the combo pill in August, after being on it nearly continuously since 17 when I picked it up in college. My blood pressure had started to go up last year, so we figured this was the cause. I had never had high blood pressure before - usually the opposite. I tried reducing salt and increasing exercise for a bit, but it had little impact. So, I was recommended going off or switching to the mini-pill progesterone-only. The first two weeks were fine, then I had a couple of weeks of constant overheating(no 'flashes', just constant hot). I read about how sometimes when you go off the combo pill, your insulin levels can be weird as your other systems take over estrogen and general thermostat regulation, so I cut out all the high spiky insulin foods(think sugar and white rice along with the rest of the online lists of foods to avoid) and reduced some caffeine, and the heat problem turned off completely. Now it has been three months of progesterone only, and I can see my skin aging, and hair growth slowing. I had been having a lot of brain-fog issues the past few years, and those have not changed, sadly. It's very annoying, and I hope that part at least sorts itself out by 60. Bonus and unexpected - my internal base stress level has gone down. It's just easier to cope. I have added rice and sugar back with no problems, and overheating is completely gone. I am sleeping better, although now I have weird little dreams, when I have never been one to remember dreams much at all. I do not have more energy, and some of my hand strength is just gone. Also, mentally, I find I am more detached from things and people, but not in a depressed or destructive way. More the feeling of having a choice about being involved or not, rather than having an immediate reaction (like wanting to scream at the grocery clerk that eye-rolled when asking a valid question). Hoping I am just done, but it's too soon to tell. I get mild cramping with no period, and some spotting during the week I would have normally had one in the '4th week off' time. But it's too soon to write off periods altogether. I am hoping most of the worst of it was masked during the past 5 years. But...I do have female relatives that didn't hit menopause until 56-65. One would have thought with half the planet going through this in their lives that there would be more medical study and progress on this in the last 50 years, but apparently no. lol I think starting a better workout routine and nutrition plan is next on the agenda. Wondering how much of my personality and priority-setting is hormone related. Will be interesting to see who I become now. Maybe my ten year old self has a chance again. :) She was fun.

If I remember correctly (that's a problem in itself!), the test for estrogen level was pretty definitive - I was below the level that I was supposed to be, and I think the doc tested me again in about 6 months without an improvement. By then, I knew without them telling me that the remaining ovary wasn't working and that I was going in to menopause. My mother also did not provide any info. She, in fact, said it wasn't that bad. For me, it's been 10 years of hell. I started with hot flashes about every 1/2 hour, and now I'm about every 1.5-2 hours. That's a lot (or not much) of disturbed sleep. I do remember something that my doc told me, but I haven't really researched it - women who have less body fat have more severe menopausal symptoms because they don't have any or have less stored estrogen. Not that that will make you feel any better! Still, my exercise kind of keeps me sane and out of the "poor me" mindframe. Hopefully, this isn't really menopause for you. I have seen some comments about hot flashes from women going off the pill - maybe doc can answer whether that's common.

Leslie I will do that...Susan...that is what is so bad in the hospital no one even wanted to take my blood cuz my veins are just so bad.....Inever get blood drawn with just one poke.....I wish I could...Brian had to get his done yesterday and one poke and man his blood comes flying into the tube....not mine....dang it! Hi all. Well I made it through the appt yesterday and am doing ok. Not much pain at all and the swelling is going down nicely. For some reason I have been sleeping alot both yesterday and today. Im not on any pain meds except an occasional tylenol. Im hoping to go out with a friend tomorrow just to see a movie and run an errand or two. Thanks for all the good thoughts.

Stacy, could your new problems be caused from you long ride home? I wouldn't change your iron until you talk to Dr. tomorrow.

Stacy, as I remember your hemoglobin was 10....that is still low....you need to be up around 12.5 at least.
Don't stop the iron pills! Eat iron rich foods, too.
And don't over do you activities.

The only thing I can tell you is don't quit taking those iron pills Stacy! Remember thats how my DSIL got into such big trouble, she thought she didn't need to take them anymore. Listen to the doc (even tho I know it sucks sometimes!)

i would continue until the doctor tells you it's ok to quit.

and a little teaching about taking iron pills, just in case your doctor didnt.

take on an empty stomach with juice preferably. the vitamin c in juice enhances the absorption rate of iron. dont take with tea/cola/milk.

HI guys and thanks....since the doc read off the pills and amounts she has me taking I am just guessing if I was to call today she would say no she wanted me to keep taking them..and in lite of what Carol said that my iron is still not as great as I thought it was...I will contiune them as bad as I hate taking them...
Gosh annette....I can'ttake them on a empty stomach when I do I get sooo sick...I have to have something in my stomach.....so I do take them with water though but about 30 mins of eating something.....And Leslie she told me it was from a blood clot not the riding and was suprised it was just now starting to bleed..(since it is old blood) but it sure is painfull....course she said it would be...and said itw ould be like when Ihad a period..I told her that it sucked because I didn't have pain with my periods..and now I am....okay no more whining I know that in a few more weeks and yearsto come I will be sooo grateful I had this done.....Stacy

The best way to take iron pills is on an empty stomach with a glass of orange juice. My hemoglobin goes up and down, I'm an expert on anemia. It can make you feel half-dead.

Jannie do you not feel sick taking them on a empty stomach? I have tried with like sunny delight but I get soooo nauses afterwards it is horrible! STacy

stacy, if the ferrous sulfate makes you nauseated, ask your doc if you can change to ferrous gluconate (fergon). i have had a lot of girls in maternity who couldnt handle the feso4, but did well on the fergon. the reason for taking it on an empty stomach has to do with the receptors in your stomach. if they are "busy" with food, they cant digest your iron.

I don't have any trouble swallowing iron pills with orange juice. I get up early, between 4 and 5 am, take my pill and go back to bed for a couple or three hours. Just my experience.
