First things first, caulk around the window. Pull the trim off caulk any gaps, put the trim back on.

I'd like to see the bed the long way on the short wall, set up like a daybed. I'd look for an older iron-type bedframe on craigslist. Lots of pillows on the window side will both help with drafts and give it that daybed feel. I'd use that header to do a romantic drapey thing enveloping the daybed.

When you say shoe & clothes storage, how much exactly? Could you put a closet organizing system into the closet to maximize the space in there? I think the dresser my be to bulky of a piece for the room. I'd like to see it replaced with an older antiquey desk/vanity with drawer stacks on either side for storage and maybe a storage ottoman.

A full sized mattress is 54" x 75", which is only 15" wider than a twin. The room is 99" wide so if a full sized bed were put about 24" from the window, across the room, you would have 24" at the end of the bed to walk around it to the far side.

24" for a table and lamp near the window + 54" for width of mattress (Add a few inches for clearance, so make it 66") 24+66 =90 (8-1/2 feet) 175" (14'7")-90 = 85 inches or about 7 feet at the closet end of the room for a dresser on the wall opposite the door. You would probably have enough room for a small chair on the door wall of the room.

Thanks for the replies. Should note that this is a rental. Can you say major downsize? LOL Tiny apartment living at its finest! Rough guesstimate on number of shoes: Currently shoes are sitting on floor in closet, leaving no floor space in there. I agree the triple dresser is too large for the room, things were pretty much just put anywhere on moving day to make it livable. There is a rod and shelf above that go the length of the closet and the rod is full of hanging clothes. Even with the triple dresser, there is some overflow and no place for sweaters and sweatshirts yet. Also, I'm into beach style, if you have any beach style suggestions or for the pieces I may need to acquire along those lines that would be great. Thanks for your input!

If you painted that piece, it wouldn't look so massive. You may not be able to go much smaller if you have overflow.

From what I see the dresser/nightstand don't look that efficient for storage in comparision to their bulk. There seems to be wasted space between the drawers for the dresser front and the center cabinet most likely doesn't work so well as drawers. I am all about living on a budget and have found Craigslist a great source for buying and reselling furniture so that you can get what you want with a minimal outlay of cash. As you say you are interested in a beach theme, you can look for vintage or antique pieces and whitewash or paint them which will also help a lot to reduce the visual bulk.

I would first seriously consider the suggestion to upgrade to a full mattress. I just priced a brandnew fullsized Sealy at Costco for $399 as I'm considering upgrading my teenaged son's (soon to be college student) room. He also has a small room (10'x12'). Once you've finalized your bedsize, I would look for a bedframe. If you are sticking with the twin I second the recommendation for a daybed; if fullsize, I would stick with a headboard only, no footboard. I would also suggest utilizing under the bed for added storage. You can purchase inexpensive underbed storage boxes at places like Target or Walmart; which is great to store out of season clothes--esp. bulky sweaters. As my closets are also not that large, I also find the need to rotate my (and my 3 children's) clothes with the seasons instead of trying to cram everything in. Put a wall rack on the wall behind the door or side of closet to hang up extra jackets, purses, etc. Extra storage can also be utilized from a vanity or desk. It will add more interest to the room, but there is nothing to say you cannot store other items there.

Use graph paper to sketch out your plan and consider items through estate sales, Craigs list and IKEA to stay within your budget. Resell what you don't need on Craigslist. Talk to your landlord about the drafty window and see if he can send someone in to fix it. Perhaps if he realizes it's wasting heat (esp. if he is paying the electric bill), he may feel more motivated to get it caulked. If you can, thermal drapes are a good option to keep out the drafts. JC Penneys have many good quality and reasonably priced ones.

To reduce the hallway look, consider adding a chair in a corner and look for wall art to balance things out further.

If you're sticking with the twin bed, although I'd give serious consideration to Palimpsest's ideas, try centering one long side of the bed on the wall opposite the door wall. Then find two dressers or cabinets or bookcases to act as headboard and footboard. It's another way of getting the daybed look. I'd have identical dressers or bookcases, but you could get an interesting look with mismatched ones as well.

Put the dressers perpendicular to the wall at the head and foot of the bed. Now you have storage in the dressers and instant nightstands, as the top of the dressers can hold your lamp and alarm clock and whatever else you need. You can pad the backs of the dressers with foam and cover that with some nice fabric. Now you have upholstered sides to your daybed that are comfy to sit against during the day and nice to rest against while reading in bed at night. I'd have either the bed or the dressers on casters so as to be able to move the bed to make changing the sheets easier.

With that arrangement, there should be room for a small desk and chair, or a comfortable reading chair up by the window.

This room is a bit over 9 by 14. You can see that with 8'4" you couldn't have furniture directly across like here, but that there is plenty of room to walk around the end with the bed turned.

Even though it's a rental, you can still get closet organizers to increase the effective storage space in your closet. You can get freestanding hanging and shelf space for the closet in the room. You can probably remove the existing hanging bar and plunk in the freestanding closet fixture with little effort.

Thanks for sharing that photo! Helps to visualize. I realize one could get around the end of the bed if it were perpendicular to the wall (if you turn sideways a bit), but I'm not sure I could put anything else on the opposite wall and still have room to navigate or have a workable flow. The closet essentially reduces the room to 12' instead of 14'.

Assuming the draft issue could be resolved maintenance wise or with heavier curtains or something, elevating the bed against the window in combination with some curtains along the header would create a cool effect, but I was thinking it may block a lot of the window, as would any other furniture placed there.

Will have to try some things on paper with other furniture that I have and see what happens!

You're not using the vertical space in the room. Consider getting an armoire that will be narrower than the dresser, but a whole lot higher, and will store as much or more than the dresser in less floor space.
