How do you organize your DVDs?

Hubby has several hundred DVDs and his collection just keeps on growing. They're currently stored in different rooms but we want to bring all of them together in one location, and organize them so we can find a movie efficiently.

We'll need to categorize them, but what categories do we use, and how do we determine WHICH category a movie belongs in? For instance, I'm sure as soon as "300" is released on DVD hubby will run out and buy it, but which category does it belong in? Action-adventure, epic, fantasy?

I would really appreciate any and all ideas. Thank you!

We just do ours alphabetically.

I store my seeds in a bread loaf tupperware type container in alphabetical order. I used 3 x 5 index cards that I write the name on and staple the seed packs to the card. I try and staple above the ziplock with the bags and if very small seeds not in the ziplock, I put in a seed ziplock and staple. I keep all of the different types stapled to the index card. For example, I have a card with hollyhocks, stapled to it are 4 different types of hollyhocks. When the card if full, I start another and put a #2 Hollyhock on it. All seeds are logged into a spreadsheet with sowing, growing, germinating, who I got it from and planting info. I sort by sow month and pull out all the seeds I need to plant. When finished sowing, I re-staple to the card and re-file. All finished packs are put in a pile and I add a "DONE" to the spreadsheet and next year remove all the "DONE" seeds and start over. I use a staple remover when sowing and a little dixi cup to collect the staples BYW, all my seeds are stored together except for the ones that need to be stored in the fridge. I started stapling because those little ziplock seed packets get so unruly and some of the folded seed packets get lost on the bottom. Good luck! Andrea Appaloosa909

I organize mine by genre so if I feel like action I don't have to remember the title of all the actions films I have and search alphabetically. Genre is so much eaiser because it puts all the same type movies in one place. Of course for those actors that I am in love with like Dolph Lungren, Vin Diesel they have their own section or the what I call the eye candy section. The tv section just has all the tv shows together and then the crime shows together, scifi shows etc. As for whether or not something would be considered drama or action etc. I make that call. I put it in the section I most relate the movie with.

You could actually do a couple different things. You could have one rod and use hangers. You would have to fold them a bit to fit on the hanger and not drag on the floor, but that's usually how they come from the cleaners. For heavy cloths, use two hangers together for added strength. You could also hang multiple rods at slightly different heights and depths. If you have a walk in closet this works great, but will still work with a reach in. Hang the highest rod the farthest back, then one a bit lower and closer and even a third lower and closer than the second. Then you can hang the cloths right on the rod instead of on a hanger. I like the rod because of it's larger diameter it doesn't leave creases in the cloths. You can also overlap them on these rods. For optimum use of space, you'd need to use multiple rods and overlap. Is that totally confusing?!

I type all the printed recipes I tear out of disposable periodicals, as well as anything given to me and ones from my books which I want to use a lot. I store them in my computer. Most are in Word. Some in Notepad (basic text editor). I also copy over and save ones I find online. I have a Recipes file on the computer with a whole bunch of categories that make it easier to find what I'm looking for because the titles are totally ad hoc and can start with the name of whose recipe it is. I also have subfolders in many categories for Traditional Home, which are for family recipes. I also have a couple of binders, one for cooking and one for baking, where I put recipes I've printed out and expect to use again. They're in page protectors, and easy to pop out and set on the counter when I want to use one. If it gets too messy, I recycle and print a new one when I need it. If someone wants the recipe, I hand it off and print a new one when I need it, so as not to kill a party by going to sit at the computer. It's great being able to adjust the arrangement and print in an easy to read way. Having the recipes in the computer also makes it a lot easier to make shopping lists, especially while entertaining. The first time I make a recipe from a book, unless it's hard to read, I just use the book. Same if I'm making a lot of recipes out of the same book, like Local Breads. The other great thing about having them in the computer is that I can customize them for friends who don't really know how to cook and put in all the little directions and tips that it's assumed you know. I don't do brevity well enough for cards. :) My recipes don't fit!

I have maybe three DVDs, so no worries there. But I have almost 300 CDs. Those are arranged roughly by classical/pop/jazz and then alphabetical by artist/group and then alphabetical by title. Keeps it pretty manageable. If I had 300 DVDs, I probably would keep them alphabetical.

I make the kids come back into the living room, and pick them up off the floor, and put them BACK in the corner cabinet under the TV.

Seriously though, it is my great preference not to own many DVDs--the kids have movies they'll watch more than once, but there are very few adult movies I want to see often enough to justify having space for them.

Like Steve, I only have a couple DVDs. No problem there.

But hundreds and hundreds of CDs. And they are divided (randomly) between the main and lower level of the house. migrating on whim. Upstairs there is a sort of categorical system - but what is, say, Lyle Lovett (and his large band)? Country? Pop? Swing? What is that anyway?

Menwhile down in Guyland, chaos reigns. DH is eclectic - one day it is the Anonymous 4 (ancient chanting), the next Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme. He has tons of blues and I just don't "get" the subtleties between Mississippi delta and St. Louis and Chicago schools. I alphabetized several hundred down there couple years ago, then it all went to heck.

Down the road I will bring order to these CDs somehow.

How do you store mass quantities, physically? These are all over the place, having way outgrown racks, towers, etc. Whatever I design/build, I'm thinking it has to be more horizontal than vertical and mostly eyelevel (My ankles can't see well).

DH also have many, many CD's. We own 2 CD players, one that holds 300 CD's, the other holds 400. We've decided to keep the original cases and they're in boxes.

The way we finally organized the rest was for DH to alphabetize them by first letter only. DH knows the name of each group and I have no clue. Besides, there are many that don't even give the name. They are put into the CD cabinet in ABC order and it's been easy to keep up because each CD taken out doesn't have to find the exact spot back, just the shelf it's on. And it really doesn't take that long to scan a row of CD's looking for the one you want.

Most are on the shelves vertically because it would be too difficult to pull out one from the bottom if they were stacked on top of each other.

DH has also transferred many to a couple of IPOD's. Before the IPOD came into fashion, he had recorded his own mixes of many of his CD's. Then, he finally sold off a bunch.

We have both, hundreds of CDs and hundreds of DVDs. We used the leather binders for a while. However, we find these to be quite inefficient. The disks fall out, and are hard to keep straight. So, we are making the switchover to media boxes. Using the Columbian cd/dvd envelopes and just alphabetizing the DVDs. Ikea and BestBuy are the only places i have been able to locate the boxes relatively inexpensively.

Just label the envelopes and keep them sorted by letter.

I actually, haven't given any thought to how to sort out the CDs. But, the DVD sorting is going well.

The boxes come with lids and a label site. So, they are stackable too.
