Anyone know a tried and true tater tot dish? It sounds good, and will be easy tonite since we are looking forward to a 2hr idol special. Plus have company coming tomorrow nite, and would like to keep a clean kitchen if possible.
Funny you should ask...I was thinking I would use the Tater Tots I have in the freezer for dinner tonight.
Here is a recipe that someone posted here recently.
Tater-topped casserole
1 lb ground beef 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 can (103/4 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup 1/4 cup milk 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables 1 cup Shredded Cheddar cheese 1 lb (half of a 32-oz package) frozen bite-size seasoned potato nuggets
Heat oven to 375. Brown meat with onions in skillet, stirring occasionally; drain. Spoon into 8 inch square baking dish. Mix soup and milk; pour over meat mixture. Top with layers of vegetables, cheese and potatoes. Bake 45 minutes or until potatoes are golden brown and vegetables are heated through.
That was one of my favorite childhood and college dishes--easy to make and delicious. Mine, however, didn't have cheese or vegetables in it, other than onions. Enjoy!
Trin, you're welcome. Hope it turned out good and DH liked it.
Actually, I cheated and didn't make the casserole. I hadn't taken the ground beef out to thaw, so I ended up just browning the TTs in the convection oven and cooking the veggies in the microwave. Served the purpose.
DH really like it! He is not a big casserole fan, but he really enjoyed this. It was so easy, and a snap to clean up after. I will be making this again for sure!
I just made this last nite.We love it.Very easy to do.I double the recipe. The way I make my is a little different. All to their own. I brown the ground chuck/beef with chop onion. I drain it very well.I mix two cans of cream of mushroom soup with a 1/2 cup of milk.Place the meat first in casserole dish, add the mushroom soup.Than add the tater tots on top.Bake at 350* for 30 mins so that the tater tots gets done and brown. We love it.Again ever one to their own.
I make it similar to the way Judy does, brown the meat and onions. Put meat in casserole with a can of drained peas,(mix it up)Pour soup/milk mixture over meat and peas. I dont like cream of mushroom soup at all, so I use cream of chicken. I then put the tator tots on top and bake about 45 minutes. ....sometimes I have too much soup/milk mix (I just dump and should measure!) SO then I pour the rest over the top of the tots.
jel48, I used french green beans in mine too last nite. All I had handy. I didn't add any milk either...forgot. But it was good! Hope it is good leftover too. Funny caroline 1947 mentioned the Duggar family, as it was the very first time I saw it made and thought about making it then, but forgot about it. LOL
I make mine the same but use green string beans instead of mixed veggies. I don't put cheese in mine and I use the regular size tator tots. It is one of DH favorites.
We're having it tonight..can't wait! Just bought the ingredients today. While at the store, I found that the Deli had made a Mexican Tater Tot casserole today from a recipe they wanted to try. There wasn't anyone in the store at that time who had tried it, so I don't know how it was. Sure sounds good, though!!
Miss Glenda never has had tater tot casserole? With all your wonderful recipes, I could see you easily putting this together for one of your groups. It is a keeper in this house, along with a multitude of Glenda's recipes. I am so glad I got a chance to make it. Tonite is taco nite for the survivor crowd, and DH is the chef....yea!
I make a Mexican Tater Tot casserole and everyone here loves it!
Brown 1-1/2 lbs ground beef and put in a 9x13 pan. Layer the following on the beef: 1 large green pepper chopped 1 sweet onion chopped 1 lb sliced mushrooms 1 can sliced ripe olives 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 can chopped stewed tomatoes (mostly drained) 8 slices of American cheese frozen tater tots Pour 1 can of Cheddar Cheese soup over the potatoes.
Bake uncovered for 1 hour at 375. I serve it with salsa and sour cream and chopped green onion.
I make a mean tater tot caserole>:) Dh is not a veggie eater so I brown the hamburger, then layer that in the pan, add cream of chicken soup (he doesn't like mushreooms) and then chop up some water chesnuts which give it a little crunch. I top with tater tots sprinkled with seasoning salt and also some shredded chedder cheese. It is a favorite in our house, and with us having little ones, it can easily be heated up in the oven for lunch the next day. Funny, when ever my sis comes up to stay that is the meal that she wants me to fix for her:)
This is one of those "no recipe" dishes. It's something you can't really mess up. I always cook the meat first and get rid of the grease. I often will use sausage instead of hamburger or a mixture. I prefer my vegetable on the side but sometimes mix it in. Not a green bean fan so the "traditional" method is modified here. I too am not a mushroom fan so I use other cream soups, whatever I have. Cream of potato is great, celery, chicken, like I said, whatever I have. Sometimes I'll put in a can/jar of gravy instead of the cream soup if I'm tired of cream soups. Sometimes I'll use canned potatoes, fresh ones or whatever frozen potatoes I have. Large diced potatoes work great. After all, it's meat, potatoes, and a veg. How do you mess it up? It's GOT to be good! I'm moderate with seasonings these days, but I like some Louisiana Hot Sauce in it, garlic salt, onion, and if I'm short on hamburger or something I'll cut up some smokey hot dogs, use some frozen meatballs or something to put in for added meat. Depending on the flavor I desire, I might add some Worstechire sauce, Teriyaki, steak sauce or something too. I cook mine covered to get the potatoes cooked through, then turn up the oven a bit, pull the foil off and brown it up so the top is crisp. Ir reheats well either in the microwave, stove or oven although sometimes I do need to add a little water to steam it a bit to get a good reheat and then it's like when it was first made. In Minnesota, it's a "hotdish". And Tater Tot Hotdish is popular and simple. This is something that everyone should be able to make. It's really not difficult and truly is no-fail. Want more meat? Fine. Want more potatoes? No problem. Want more veggies? Go for it. No onion? Lots of onion? Half the pan with onion and veggies and the other half without? Simple. Few dishes are so simple and fool proof.
