15' Deep Dishwasher for shallow cabinet

I was thinking of trying to put a dishwasher in my basement kitchenette, but I also wanted shallow cabinets down there to save money on countertops and to save space since I don't need a lot of storage down there. Does anyone know of a 15" DEEP dishwasher? I've heard of the 15" wide, but never deep. I am worried that such a custom item will actually make it MORE expensive to go small (isn't it funny how that works?).

There isn't such a thing. You would also have trouble with a useful sink in those dimension. I would plan for standard depth cabinets as much as possible since they are the least expensive. The savings you would get from the smaller countertop would be eradicated by expenditures elsewhere on customizing.

I wonder if you truly would save on countertops. You might use less raw materials, but the main cost is in fabrication and small jobs tend to run into minimum charges or higher cost per sq ft anyway. You might save $25-50 on materials and then run into a job minimum and pay just as much for less. I agree that you will be very limited on a sink.

Make sure things would really price out as you are thinking. The standards are usually less expensive, have a certain functionality, and there are probably better ways to keep your costs down.

I have one of those. 2 shelves, but only 8 inches wide. It might have been good for cookie sheets and pizza pans had it not been for the other shelf. Shortly after we moved in (10+ years ago) I took a heavy cardboard dishpack box and folded/taped 2 shallow box/trays that fit in that space. We store spices and such things in there. Several people have questioned if the heat from the dishwasher affects that cabinet, but it must be well insulated, because it does not. When I need something, I slide the box out far enough to get it (most commonly used items are generally in the front), or just take the whole box out of the cabinet. They are deep enough that things do not fall out. The cardboard is still holding up after more than 10 years. I have a set of slide out shelves in another cabinet for pots and love them. If you can afford to do a slide out shelf, that might be nice, but if yours is as narrow as mine, you might lose way too much room on the sides. I'd thought about having DH build a couple of boxes out of 1/4 ply, but then realized that would cost just enough room that the bulk sized spice bottles would no longer fit 2 by 2.

you don't think it will look strange if the 2 ends don't match? Since that side of the island doesn't face an open space, I think you'll seldom see the whole side at once. Therefore, not matching is irrelevant. The countertop already won't match, and I think that will be far more visible, so I wouldn't worry at all about the underneath part not matching. I would suggest making the shallow drawer a little wider (same as the butcher block) and lose the other drawer completely. That way, you would scoot the stools down a bit and have some more roominess created by the overhang continuing around the corner. We have three stools in a 7.5' opening, and with elbows and legs, I can't imagine being truly comfortable with four stools and only six more inches. We have 18" deep drawers on our pantry wall, and we find them tremendously useful. I think 15" could be quite useful, too.

What do you plan to store in the drawers in the island? If the items will fit in a 12" deep drawer, front to back or side to side, no problem. One of the homes on the Remodeled Home Tour a few years ago had a wall of cabs that were only 15" deep that included drawers. The designer said that the homeowners loved the cabs, adding that they felt they were the perfect depth for their needs. Salex, I knew I recognized your name. I believe you commented on one of my earlier posts about building cabinets yourself. When we first moved in we were just going to add an island and DH was going to build it, which I was fine with but we've had some big changes since then. He was laid off suddenly shortly after we bought the house and I had to go back to work (the timing worked out as my son just entered kindergarten).. He did find more work and we are much better off then we were before with me working as well, however our kitchen is extremely dysfunctional and he doesn't help with any cooking or cleaning. Working and trying to hand wash dishes for my family and deal with the wonky space with no storage and I am at the end of my rope. I do not have patience for DIY right now when it comes to this major source of angst in my life. There are so many things in our house that he could work on and build for and I would welcome everyone one of them but I just can't get excited about him doing the kitchen. I think he has most of the tools you mentioned but does not have a good source of wood. He also really isn't "in practice" with woodworking. He knows it, but hasn't honestly done much in the 10 years we've been married (think he did more when he was younger) so I'm not confident in him doing this. I do think he's capable of figuring it out, I just don't know what we'll have to go through to get to the end result. I think I'm about to find out though. He's insistent on doing it and as much as I am against it I can't just go drop $8K on cabinets if he's not in agreement with me. I thought I'd gotten him open to at least considering buying if I found something decent at a decent price but I guess not. I'm sorry, I'm feeling very disappointed right now. If there is a 15" wide model, you might be able to design your layout to have it go into the END of the counter run instead of into the front of it. Buuuutttt...I have to agree with the above comments. I think the dishwasher will be the least of your issues!

I agree with the above posters and your understanding is correct - 15" wide, but nothing 15" deep. There are counter-top dishwashers but I have no idea how well they clean.

Another thing you need to consider is how frequently one might be used. A dishwasher has seals which need periodic use to remain functional. I've heard weekly. For this reason, we decided against both a dishwasher and compactor for our basement kitchen. Instead, we have a large laundry basin (out-of-sight) which we use for clean-up.

Unless you're planning on granite, stock countertops are relatively inexpensive and are 25" deep which is what standard-depth cabinets require.
