DD1 will be working there for 4 days. Can you'll recommend places to see and places to eat. Thanks.

Be prepared for rain--everyday. Look for a tour the first day. Ask the local people also

Thanks for your suggestions, bamboo and fruitnut. Given the accolades, I'm very, very anxious to try Sweetcrisp. I should have bought one last year, but better late than never. I've seen a lot of praise for Jewel's flavor, but, based on your description, fruitnut, I might be happier with another variety. I had my eye on Star and Windsor, so I might go with one or both of those. Have either of you (or anyone else) tried Palmetto? From what I can read, it gets very high marks for flavor. As for your question, rayrose, I do have a couple of potted SHB (O'Neal and Southmoon). The lower chill varieties like Sweetcrisp worry me a little bit because of early bloom times, but I can't resist trying them. I already have to protect some of my early bloomers (mostly rabbiteyes), though, so it shouldn't be too much trouble. Thank you so much for the offer to come and see your pool. I would have loved to, but we started getting impatient. I wish I found your posts a week earlier.... Based on your pictures (they are great because they show the color at different times of the day:shade/sunshine), I went ahead and chose prism blue without actually seeing it! They are starting on the pebble sheen tomorrow. I could have waited till next week and visited your pool over the weekend, but really think we can't go wrong with the color. It seems like a very nice blue color: even in the shade. I just want to get our pool finished so that we can swim before the weather turns "cold". Thank you again for your pictures and last comment..it really helped our decision.

Almost nothing looks good about that lawn. Need a picture taken from 3 inches away from the blades on a cloudy day (or in the shade) without the flash to see if it might be a disease. Try this, dig up one square foot of grass in the bad area and see if there are any grubs. If you see fewer than a dozen grubs, then don't do anything. If you have more than a dozen, at this time of year they have stopped feeding, so killing them would be a waste of time and money. They have done their damage and that would be what you see at the surface. The damage was done months ago. Check your insecticide to see if it works on caterpillars. The best thing for caterpillars is a product called BT Worm Killer. It only kills caterpillars. It takes about 48 hours, but it stops them from feeding immediately.

If there is active disease in the soil, the new grass will die in 2 weeks. Ask me how I know about that. You have to use the corn meal or cracked corn to get out of this situation. As I mentioned cornmeal is a biological control for certain fungal diseases in certain grasses. It seems to work in St Augustine all the time but other grass owners do not get the same success. Corn meal decomposes by a fungal action. Whatever the fungus is attracts a beneficial, predatory fungus to decompose the initial decomposer. That secondary fungus is called Trichoderma (try koh DER mah or trick oh DER mah). The population of the Trichoderma fungus increases on the corn meal. Once it devours the corn meal fungi, all that population of Trichoderma finds other pathogenic fungi in the soil and on the plants. It continues to work until the bad fungus is gone. After the disease is gone, the population of Trichoderma declines but never disappears in the soil. Since this biological control requires at least a minimal population of beneficial fungi in the soil, if you apply a chemical fungicide first, that kills off the beneficial fungi rendering corn meal ineffective as an anti fungal agent. However, corn meal also is a medium grade organic fertilizer. If you apply it at 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet, it will supply all the fertilizer you need for many weeks. If you apply corn meal, and you should so as to not waste money on the new sod, then you should not need more fertilizer until the 4th of July. With the 4th of July being the hottest part of the year, you might want to use an organic fertilizer again at that time to take you through to Labor Day. Then you could restart chemical fertilizer if you want to do that. Organic fertilizers take 3 full weeks to show the improvement. This, too, is due to the biological process that have to happen before the grass gets the plant food. I can reconfirm that because I fertilized with alfalfa pellets just 3 weeks ago and "all of a sudden" my lawn looks dark green. It's always interesting to me how sudden the effect appears - just don't expect it to be sudden over night.

Not necessarily rain every day. The weather is beautiful now...in the 70's...sunny and mild.

Depends on what you want to do. Houston is a nice city. Many wonderful places to eat. That also depends on what part of the city you will be staying in. It's the 4th largest city in the nation.

They have a nice zoo and all nearby is the museum district.
Across from the zoo is the Museum of Natural Science and Butterfly house...and not far from there the Museum of Fine Art, Contemporary Art Museum, Holocaust Museum, and others.

Do you know what part of Houston she will be staying in?

I recently came across this service (read it in the local paper, north of Houston) but haven't tried it yet. Also, if you Google Houston+tours, a whole lot comes up. We've been here (in the Woodlands) 2 yrs and love Memorial Park, Kemah, beaches (Crystal Beach to Surfside, they're all differant) Museum district, the Zoo, taking the ferry across the bay, etc., etc., etc. There's a LOT of so much variety here -- what are her interests? As far as restaurants, Cadillac Grill in Kemah, Casey's in Galveston, etc. Where will she be staying?

Different Areas of Houston have totally different atmosphere's. Downtown Area, the most interesting is the Houston Theater District and underground tunnels.

The West "U" area, you will find incredible shopping in The Village, if you are into "high end" shopping.

The Heights of Houston is a great place to shop for Antiques.

The Galleria Area is a great place to stay and shop. Great Restaurants in the Area.

NASA is off 45 South at NASA Rd 1.
