I feel your pain. My DH is the same way. Come to think of it, my father was the same way too! DH gets a burr in his saddle and decides to "declutter". The problem is he throws away everybody's stuff. I have reasons for my "things". Just because it doesn't make any sense to you doesn't mean it's useless to me. Sometimes the boys and I have stuff we are saving for a REASON.

Cynic - I like the that "junk/stuff" saying. I never asked him to clean up. He is a Neat Freak and is always cleaning up and reorganizing things. But this time it was MY things, I just want my things to be left alone. There is a method to my madness. Also he is Felix and I am Oscar.

I always tell Denny....don't throw anything of mine away...I don't care what it looks like...

And don't clean up my messes...I know exactly where things are in my mess...Just leave my things alone.

I get a little testy when my things get moved or tossed.

I know I sound crabby..but I'm good to him..we laugh and smile , hug and kiss a lot....LOL

I once asked DSIL to throw away, or burn, some old boards I had in the garage. Yep, he hauled away my cold frame and burned it! Must be a man thing.

Well, Clare....I have the opposite problem! Since October, my DH has been home, and from that time until today, he has not done ONE thing around the house. I still work full time, come home, clean, do laundry, make dinner, etc.
I think I would rather have your problem!!!!

My DH couldn't find my stuff if he had to step over it. He is oblivious to stuff. Anybody's stuff.
In fact one night I was so tired of a huge, year old pile in our bedroom, that I put it all in a bag, put it in the garage, and it is still there 6 months later unopened.
Should be interesting when I clean the garage to see what is in there. (note: I did not throw it away)
I feel for you, I would be livid if DH tossed any of my "stuff"

My DH saw a bowl of my crocus bulbs sitting out. He thought vthey were potatoes (???!!!) so he proceeded to cut off all the "sprouts" and cut the potatoes in pieces for boiling. I caught him in the act. He was mortified and offered to buy me new bulbs, at a cost of about $36. I told him, no, just plant what's left. He did and we shall see in spring if anything survives! I agree, we can't kill 'em. He THOUGHT he was doing something good. $%^&*!

Oh Clare. You're not alone: I am planning a 50th wedding anniversary party for good friends. She asked if she could come by herself. LOL.

DH has tried cleaning up my things and laundering my clothes, all in the name of "helping!" So I sure do know what you're going through, Clare. :(

I don't get them (DH's) sometimes. Saturday, I told my son I would pay a cab for his friend to come over. I put $30 on the bench by the door. We were at the door greeting other people, and DH says "why is MY money on the bench"? I looked at him and said "WHAT are you talking about? I got that money out of my purse a few minutes ago". He just shook his head and laughed because he realized how silly he'd been. I don't know why on earth he thought someone went and got his money.

And the weird thing is.... my DH is unbelievably generous and spends all of his money on everybody else. Had he known Mike's friend needed a ride to town, he would have offered to pay for the cab himself. I just don't know where his head was.

But this time it was MY things, I just want my things to be left alone. There is a method to my madness. Also he is Felix and I am Oscar.
It's little things (well maybe they really aren't that little) that make me glad to be an old maid. BF has his place, an hour away, and I have mine. He is an Felix, and I am an Oscar.

Jannie, I remember you posting about the crocus blunder. I thought how on earth would anyone think they were potatoes.

I gotta add here. I just talked to BF, and he said he had just baked a cake. He sounded really proud of himself, as he does very little cake baking.

My DH decided to trim the shrubs around our propane tank, Something he never does. Before I left I reminded him not to cut them to close..
When I returned you could have heard me screaming for miles. He had cut them down to the ground, not only the ones around the tank but the ones across from the tank on the fence row. Shrubs I had grown for 20 years. They were so tall I put my storage building behind them to hide it. Now all I see is a big red building and the sun reflecting off the tin roof. This I see out my bathroom window a dozen times a day....I could still kill him!!

Today I ask him to take a bag of trash I had outside my flower bed (from weeding). Later I ask if he had and said "I got 2 bags from inside your garden". He walked by the bag I wanted him to get and got my bags of mulch..Luckily the trash hadn't run so I was able to retrieve them..Yep, the one I wanted him to take is still there...MEN!!! Grrrrr

LOL. At first, I thought that you were talking about roaches based on the title of your post.

Clare, I'd swear you were me posting under a different name, 'cept my hubs is still employed. He keeps saying that I have an unnatural affinity for horizontal surfaces. If there is a free, uncovered, horizontal surface around, it won't be free and uncovered for very long! I'm a packrat and I admit it. I come by it honestly -- my dad was a packrat, too.

lindsey_ca - DH says the same thing about me. I haven't met a horizonal surface that I couldn't cover with several inches of stuff. It always amazes me what I find when I do an archeological dig. I got it from my Mom.

When DH decided to turn the garage into his shop I lost a food processor that I had sitting on a shelf out there and we lost ALL of our outdoor Christmas decorations. I still can't even fathom how he managed to do that since he is the one who insists on all the Christmas lights and outdoor decorations and rushes to put them up every year. It's February and they're still out there (yes, he went out and replaced all of the lights).

I agree, you can't live with them, and that's why I don't and never will again. I'm too old to go to prison for murder. ;)

He mistook crocus bulbs for potatoes, Jannie? OMG, that's a riot! And the best part is catching him in the act! lolol

Mine doesn't throw my stuff away but he puts it away WHILE I'm using it or before I'm done with it. It's not like I leave stuff lying around. For example, the other night I was making a pasta dish. I put the colander in the sink so I could drain the angel hair. Went to get the pot about 2 minutes later and the colander was gone! Gone! Where's the colander? Oh, he says- I thought you were done with it so I washed it and put it away. (Oh, I know what you're thinking, "Isn't he helpful! And look, he washes dishes!) Yeah, yeah..... it's not helpful to wash a perfectly clean item and move it as I'm preparing to dump boiling hot water in it! I asked him if he noticed the pasta boiling on the stove and he said he didn't, but he can spot a standing colander from 50 paces! He puts away salad fixings, too, before I've made the salad. It's ridiculous, I pull them out, he puts them away. I ask where's my lettuce and he says "I thought you were done with it." Um, see any bowls of lettuce anywhere, Einstein? lol

Men. Grrrrr. Don't EVER let him retire, Clare! Find him a job. Give him a honey-do list that won't quit. Anything, but keep him busy outside!

Oh, and how come Mr. "Place For Everything and Everything In Its Place" can't close the closet door in the LR? I close that bi-fold door about 20 times a day but if I say anything, I'm a nag.

Flamingo, My MIL is the Mrs. "Place for everything and everything in its place" that is soooo not me. My mom couldn't figure out why I was so upset about what my MIL had done until she was up here when I was in the hospital. She went to vaccuum and couldn't find the vaccuum. My MIL put it in the garage along with the carpet cleaner and other things WTH. She even told me that now she sees why I was upset. DH has to put up with my mess and doesn't touch things, on the other hand I can't get him to help because I have to watch everything he tosses, my treasures might not be much to some people but they are important to me.

I love him but I so wish he would find a job. He is not officially retired but might as well be. Speaking of washing dishes, he HATES dishes in the sink (which I leave all the time) so he has been putting them in the dishwasher if I just leave them there. But then he started branching out and looking for them everywhere. I hadn't even finished my coffee when nature called. I went to the bathroom and when I returned my 1/2 finished cup of coffee was gone. He had dumped it and put it in the dishwasher. It was sitting next to my place on the sofa while I watch the morning news. He also shuts off the TV whenever I leave the room if he is not watching too, like when nature calls. I guess I am going to have to cross my legs and hold it forever. I don't dare leave the room or everything changes.
