Redoing exterior cedar shingles

We recently moved into a New England Shingle style home built in 1896. It has a blue/gray painted cedar shingle exterior, that shows peeling in spots and other spots where it appears shingles have been recently replaced. I think I would prefer the look of stained or naturally aged shingles over painted shingles, (especially painted, peeling shingles). I assume natural shingles are less expense and last longer than painted shingles. What are the plusses/ minuses of painted vs. natural cedar? What should it run me to have this done by a contractor? How hard is it to do it myself?
