Score! or 'How do I get it all into the freezer?'

I ran to the local Safeway/Dominicks yesterday morning to grab some round steak for $1.47/# for Swiss steak and while I was checking the reduced meat section, the butcher came out with a new cart full.

Oh, boy! $50+ later I had:

10 pounds of oxtails for .99/#

6 filet/tenderloin steaks for $3/#

2 porterhouse steaks for $5.00 total and they are thick ones.

6 chicken breast pre-marinated for $2 total.

1 1/2 pounds of turkey cutlets for $2

6 trays of brats

2 trays of italian sausage

Plus one thick round steak and 3 thin cuts for roulade.

The foodsaver was busy, and I jammed it all into the already overstuffed freezer and locked the door.

My favorite buy was the oxtails, those bones are selling for $5/# and up around here. Does anyone know if oxtail stew can be pressure canned or are they too fatty?

I do love a bargain.

What a haul, Peppi! I would definitely think you could pressure cook the oxtails. Can you trim off some of the fat? Or maybe brown the pieces in the PC before cooking under pressure? I've got a good oxtail soup in an English book here if you want a recipe. #1 Son and I love oxtail soup!

You lucky duck! That 50 bucks is going to last a long time! Eat hearty!

I don't know how to can, but we love oxtail soup around here. Good luck.

Fire ants make mounds and not holes. The mounds start out small and become larger as the colony population increases. These mounds look rather innocent until you disturb them, and ALL of the ants boil out of the mound all at once. Again, there is never a discernible hole. I never worry about ants in my yard and garden, other than fire ants. Fire ants can be a problem for humans, pets, bird nests, beneficial insect eggs and larvae, and such.

I wrote in this forum seven years ago about the Frigidaire all-freezer and all-refrigerator combo. We installed them as past of a major condo remodel - and have been TOTALLY happy with our choice. They are cabinet depth with zero clearance - a big deal for us. We find the refrigerator space "adequate," though a hidden benefit of the less-deep shelves is that we have no biology experiments molding away undiscovered in the back! The freezer space is awesome! Not to mention the jaw-dropping looks we get when visitors first enter our kitchen! Again, it's seven years later, and we have not had one single issue with the pair. If we build a new house, the kitchen will be planned around this same Frigidaire combo. Not sure the Electrolux-branded pair are worth the extra $$$, as they also make the Frigidaire units

Getting Emails Sent To You...3-step Process There are three things you have to do to get emails sent to you when someone posts to a thread you started: Be sure you have a valid/current email address in your profile Again in your profile, be sure you have the "Allow other users to send you email via forms at our site." box checked (at the bottom of the profile page) Be sure to check the box labeled "Check here if you would like copies of follow-ups to your message emailed to you" when you submit your post. If you still don't get emails, check with your internet service provider and be sure emails from GW are not being filtered out as junk before they get to you.

To avoid scratching flooring, 1/4-inch hardwood plywood (available as 4 x 4 foot squares) can be laid down as a temporary covering. Wow, what a deal. How come everything was so cheap? I'd be excited about the oxtails too. I love oxtails.

I'm so jealous..I always check the mark down section for meat too..my husband prefers 'aged' beef steaks..LOL

Peppi, I'd probably make the soup, skim some of the fat when it cools, then reheat it and pressure can it just like beef chunks.

You sure made a good haul, good for you. Right now my freezer is stuffed full of wedding party food: dinner rolls, italian sausage for the pasta, cookies, shredded pork for the sandwiches. I have a couple of packages of oxtails in there, I've not been very impressed so far when I've made them, I was considering making them into stock and just canning stock and tossing the oxtails! Maybe I'll try another recipe for oxtail soup first....

I used oxtails in the last batch of beef broth I canned. Wonderful stuff.

I also like oxtails braised.

Karen, come on up. It looks like Ike is going to hit you on Friday. That invitation is always open.

Annie, I will type up my recipe for oxtails and post it. Then you and Carol can vette it for me for pressure canning. It includes red wine, so I think I would be safe.

Ann, this store is not high traffic and Safeway here is know as higher priced, competing with Whole Foods. All the items had a sale by date of 9/8. Go figure.
