I tried Ore Ida frozen hash brown potatoes and Pillsbury frozen biscuits last night for the first time. Oh, my. They were both good. I'll never go back ...

Oh, the frozen Pillsbury biscuits are WONDERFUL. So much better than the refrigerated ones. Thanks for reminding me I need to pick some up.

I wish I could find the cheddar garlic ones here. We only have the southern style or buttermilk.

She could fly a repair person in (and did fly the reno crew in when the home was restored a number of years ago, in fact), but wouldn't want to have to do it on a regular basis. This is a down to earth, practical person. She's wealthy, but she's not irrational. If a La Cornue crew had to come in and build an oven, that's doable. If maintenance persons need to come a regular intervals, that's doable. If repeated breakdowns of equipment that ought to be reliable occur, that won't be desirable. If random helicopter arrangements need to be made on an emergency basis, that would be a pita. I'm sure she'd rather avoid it. Just being able to afford something doesn't necessarily make it desirable. I am finding the various perspectives here intriguing. While I'm not a pro, I have cooked a lot, and even had a bit of real training, and from my modest perspective, it's much nicer to produce a meal on reliable equipment than not. Nicer still to be able to do it on downright lovely equipment. I haven't always lived luxuriously, but I guess I've always had pretty good cooking tools. I inadvertently tested this hypothesis at a dear relative's recently. It's her and her DH's first home, took every last sou to buy in the neighborhood they wanted, and I'm fairly convinced that Goodwill would reject the appliances they cook on every night. I produced a rather lovely meal, I'm told, but was exhausted nearly to the point of coma by the time I served it because I had to nurse every bit of it through faulty burners, irregular temperatures, etc., and did it all with downright crappy (sorry, no other description is as accurate) cookware. She gets knives and cookware for every gift now, BTW, regardless of what she requests. It's called enlightened self-interest. Anyway, the point is that it's difficult to imagine, after all the heated and enlightened debate on these threads, some from professional chefs, some from electrical engineers, some from people who routinely cook for huge families, some who entertain for huge groups, some who write cookbooks, et al, that when push comes to shove one ought to order the Sears package for reliability. I know the line is overused, but "I am shocked. Shocked." One young couple I know waited so long for Sears service, in Los Angeles yet (hardly rural), that by the time the repairman showed up, the wife was near her due date. The repairman wanted to leave because he said he needed help moving her refrigerator to get to the part he needed to repair. She put her hugely pregnant body in front of the door and refused to let him leave because she had waited so long for Sears to respond. He threatened to call the police and she said, "Fine. Go ahead. And while you're waiting for them to get here, repair my refrigerator." Made by GE by the way. Nevertheless, I do appreciate all the responses here. I have learned that there is a generator in the picture and it will have to be upgraded. Not a problem. Solar panels are out. The roof cannot be modified. A ground array would necessitate cutting down trees. Not going to happen. And fire ants are attracted to electrical current (something to think about as I, too, have looked into this for my place). The necessary KW, etc. I'll leave to the KD, engineer, and crew. Interestingly, to me anyway, even though she has natural gas available, and there is a propane tank on the grounds, the current generator is diesel. While some of what I'm reading confirms what I've already told my friend, e.g., redundancy, both gas and electric, the desirability of commercial and residential components, there are definitely things that never occurred to me, e.g. ovens with greater computer complexity like Mieles and Gaggs, which I always conceive of as big city ovens. I'll pass those ideas on, as well as this thread. Any and all suggestions welcome. Even the stuff about Sears. ;)

Sounds a bit like ... ... they give ya the car free ... ... and charge ya $10.00/gal. for gas (and they're the only purveyor of gas in the country). I think that those expensive cartridges stink. And printers preprogrammed to shoot themselves after so many thousand impressions ... even worse! Let's give 'em hell! How be we haul all the old printers to the headquarters and throw 'em through the windshield of the boss' car! One per week. Till his insurance co. won't cover him (her?) any more! Seventy years ago there were horse-drawn wagons in town hauling ice to put blocks into "ice-boxes" a couple of times a week. Farmers had to settle for a pan of cold water in the basement - or cut and store their own ice in sawdust (sawmills nearby), which some did. Sixty years ago they began building fridges. Fifty years ago they made fridges that lasted 40 years. No longer. It costs a good deal of money to mine ore, haul it to smelter, then to a factory to roll metal into sheets, then to another place to press the sheets into formed items, then haul them to the factory where they're assembled, and then to the store to sell to you. And all of that jiggledy-pokery costs a great deal of precious energy (plus smelters are energy hogs). And adds to the pollution of air and water. And land as well - I live within 2 miles of a landfill that was recently bought by a big city ($220 mill.). Not to mention the adding to global warming ... are there still people out there who claim that to be a fairy tale? So - they recycle the metal in the appliances/cars/ etc.?? It costs a lot to haul the junk to the smelter - and, like I said, it costs a lot to re-melt the flat steel, as well. Plus takes a lot of energy. Pollutes. Heats the atmosphere. Unnecessary - if they built them properly in the first place. I hope that these damn fools that are being so profligate with our precious resources don't have grandkids - cause there's a day of reckoning coming, and it isn't going to be fun for the inhabitants of the currently rich world. They don't need guns - just cheap labour. The Berlin Wall didn't work. The Israeli one won't, either. Same for the one along the Rio Grande. A major reason? People here are too uppity/lazy to do menial jobs, e.g. picking tomatoes, making beds. When you're busy diggin' your own grave ... the first/best thing that you can do is ... quit diggin'!! Not a fan. Most of them are too sweet, too salty, too SOMETHING. DH and DD prefer the convenience products over home made usually, *sigh*. I won't eat hydrogenated oils and try to stay away from as many additives as I can. I also avoid corn syrup and modified corn starch in products when I don't feel they belong there. They are by-products of the beef industry, and I think the "powers that be" are using the food chain to dispose of the waste - by feeding it to people! But really, most of the time I just don't like the taste or texture of whatever it is. DH buys these au gratin potatoes that smell like wet dog when they are cooking. Makes me gag. Plus he eats them from the pot (not baked). Everybody knows that the best part of au gratin is the browned bits around the edges and sides! Pringles coat my mouth with an odd waxy fat, Doritoes are disgusting the first time around, never mind the breath afterwards. Sour cream and onion anything....I can't bear the smell or the taste of that fake sour cream flavouring. Many cheese flavourings have it as well, plus a sweet aftertaste that just does not belong and actually makes my eyes tear up LOL. I will agree though, that there is a time and place for everything (even VELVEETA), so I am not a snob about it.

Love both those plus the Country Crock mashed potatoes I get by the meat dept. of the store. Why mashed potatoes when you can buy the real thing (complete with some lumps). I like Stove Top stuffing, too.

I have a super simple recipe for bisquick biscuits that are cheesy/garlic, just like the ones at Red Lobster if you want it. They are SO easy to make and only 3 ingredients, I think.

I need to look into the frozen ones; I *hate* the refrigerator ones, I'll go without before I'll eat them.

I hope this isn't taken as "advertising", but about a year ago I found the most wonderful dinner rolls I have ever tasted. Everyone I have served them to loves them also. They are baked and sold online by an order of nuns in Wisconsin. The cost $3.00 per dozen, and you pay a little for shipping. I get 12 dozen each time I order, and put them in the freezer. I usually order a new batch every 4-6 months, and they are as good at the end as in the beginning. The trick is to heat them up in the oven before serving (not the microwave!) I turn the oven on to 400 degrees and put them in frozen on a baking sheet. When the oven beeps as it reaches 400, they are ready. I will post the website if anyone is interested. If this is a no-no, please let me know.

Garlic cheese biscuits
2 cups buttermilk baking mix (small box equals 2 cups, Bisquick or Jiffy Mix )
2/3 cup milk
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (extra sharp?)
1/4 cup butter
1/4-1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Directions
1Preheat oven to 450*.
2Combine mix, milk and cheese with a wooden spoon until soft dough forms.
3Beat vigorously 30 seconds.
4Drop dough by heaping tablespoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
5Bake 8-10 minutes until golden brown.
6Combine butter and garlic powder; brush over warm biscuits before removing from cookie sheet.
7Serve warm.
8Makes 10 large biscuits

Oh, yeah, those frozen Pillsbury biscuits are sooo good! I bake them at least once a week. I bake the whole package with dinner, and my kids will eat them the next morning for breakfast. Now I only use the tube ones for monkey bread. If Dough Boy adds crescent rolls to that frozen line, I'll probably bake a lot of those, too.

My favorite fake version of a home-cooked meal: country fried chicken w/gravy, potatoes, biscuits, corn. Frozen breaded chicken fillets and Pillsbury biscuits, Country Crock potatoes, envelope of country gravy mix and frozen corn. Comfort food without the work. ;o) That is my DS#1's favorite meal.

Sorry, but I gotta put in my 2 cents worth, because I am ABHORRED by what goes into "food." I picked up the "County Crock" mashed potatoes at the 99Cent store last week, thinking, "this would be easy. . ." But when I read the ingredients, I put it back on the shelf. My mashed potatoes are potatoes, H2O the taters were cooked in, S+P, butter, sour cream (lactose allergy, no milk/cream.) Read what's in that prepared stuff --it's scary! Fillers and additives and preservatives. . .. YUCK!

I'm with Drewsmaga. Ever since I started reading the content lists in some of these foods, I've been eating less of these "convenience" foods.

I also just finished reading "Fast Food Nation" and it's a fascinating read but it'll forever change the way you look at pre-packaged food items. Ick.

I love those " Almost Like Red Lobster " garlic, cheese biscuits. Since a man I worked with told me about how good frozen biscuits are the Red Lobster ones are the only ones I make from scratch anymore.

I'm gonna go stand over with Rose and Drewsmaga! Been reading labels for a year or so, and I won't touch the prepared stuff, no matter how good it tastes. It's a pain to have to cook everything from scratch, but SO much better healthwise, and I can tell a huge difference in the way I feel when I stay away from that bad stuff!
