Well, why would you want to change the sink, anyway? I WOULD wash on the side with the GD so any food washed off the plates goes down the GD, but almost everything goes in the DW for me. But if its not convenient for you why not have the GD changed to the left side of the sink? It CAN go on either side. It shouldn't be too expensive to have a plumber do it if you are not up to the task. Cheaper than buying and installing a new sink, that is for sure. But even if you changed the sink, it still could go on either side. The sink doesn't really matter unless you are talking about changing to a single bowl sink with only one place to put it. A GD can go where ever there is a drain. Move it.

jrzgurl, I am a lefty also. I scrape on the right side and wash on the left. Dish strainer is on the left side of the sink. Dishwasher is on the right side of the sink.

I like the disposer in the bowl that's on the same side of the countertop where I prep veggies. That way you just shove the peelings or whatevers (if you don't compost them) into that bowl and disposer them away.

Hand washing of dishes I do in the bowl without the disposer. I like to have disposer side empty and available for scraping junkies off plates/bowls/pans before I put them in my soapy water (don't want food scraps messing up my good soapy water).

There's more than one preferred or best way. Whatever works for you IS best. Like Sue said above, if you find that you prefer the disposer in the opposite bowl from where it is now, it's not a biggee to change it.

In my old kitchen my GD was on the right and I am also a lefty and I washed by hand in the left bowl for the same reasons the others have said, I scraped into the GD first and then plunked into the wash water on the left, rinsed on the right and then set down on the counter on the right, which was my only counter LOL.

Any little bits of food that were left got caught in the strainer in the left sink anyway when I was done and dumped into the right sink. No biggie.

In my new kitchen I'm reveresed. Deep bowl on Right, GD on the left, counter on left.

We have a 2 bowl SS sink w/out a GD. Never had one and don't really see the need to ever have one. I compost all raw peelings and there is so little else that can't just go into the regular trash.

I wash on the left and a SS dish drainer lives in the right. When empty the drainer works as a wonderful surface to hold the washed produce before I prepare it. Love that it blends into the SS of the sink and my counters are always clear for other things.

I've worked at single bowl sinks in other kitchens and will never, ever have one for myself.

This can be a very emotional issue for some! Just work around your current arrangement for a while and see what works for you. Moving the GD to the other side is not a hugely expensive deal if you decide you just can't work w/ it the way it is.

I have a double sink with equal size bowls and a disposer on the left. When i first moved into the house, i realized how much i hate to clean out that little strainer in the right bowl. I went to the home depot and bought another disposer and had it installed under the other bowl. Works like magic and leaves no issues.

We have had both single and double sinks over the years. We have a double one now, which we selected when we renovated, one large basin on the right and a small basin on the left. The small basin has a waste disposal.

Instead of asking whether to get one or two sinks, the more important things, in my opinion, are: (1) the size of the sink. I'd much prefer one LARGE sink to 2 medium sinks because sooner or later you'll have to wash something big. (2) Make sure the sink drain is set toward the rear of the sink, not the dead center, so you have more storage room in the cabinet under the sink. (3) We have a really powerful food waste disposer. I see it as a minor convenience. If it broke, I probably wouldn't bother to fix it.

So if you're on a tight budget, get one sink, as large as possible with a drain that is set toward the rear. Later, if you want a waste disposal system, you can always add one. Good luck.

Thanks to the great people at this site, I just got a Ticor two bowl SS sink that is about the same size as the Kohler cast iron I have had for many years. I love it because it's pretty large on one side (at least large enough for a Calphalon roaster) and smaller, but still a good size on the right. We love it because we can use whatever side we need for the job at hand. Most of the time I use the large side for washing and the right side for rinsing.
