Paul Anater posted a video of the new Gaggenau induction cooktop, not yet available in the states, over at Kitchen and Residential Design. I was panting and drooling a bit while watching the video - and I'm a diehard gas range girl. The new cooktop has 48 micro induction units vs hobs. You can place your pan anywhere and it'll detect it and start up just the units under your pan.

Next kitchen, this will be mine.

I want it NOW!!! Okay, maybe not right now since I just bought a new stove. It does look fantastic though.

For a bathroom of your size, a 110 cfm fan should be sufficient, providing it's actually exhausting 70 to 80 cfm. A part of your problem could be that the flex ducting is causing an increase in static pressure, which reduces the ability of the fan to move air. Changing the flex to smooth metal ducting might improve the fan's performance. You don't mention the type of roofjack or termination you have on the roof. Does it allow the exhaust stream to exit unimpeded? Does it have a back-draft flap? If so, is the flap opening properly? If it's stuck or doesn't open properly, that could be the source of your problem. Barring that, is the roofjack sized properly? If it's too small it could be constricting the air flow, which also increases static pressure, further reducing the efficiency of the fan. If you want to read a bit more about properly sizing a bathroom exhaust system, I recommend the Fantech website. It contains a great deal of good information for properly sizing and installing an effective bath exhaust system (be sure to check out the downloadable PDF files). The information you'll find there would apply in any setting, regardless of the exhaust fan brand you're considering or have installed. That being said, I have Fantech bath exhaust systems in all of my bathrooms. Not only do they operate in almost total silence, they are extremely effective. I never have a build-up of steam in my bathrooms, regardless of how hot or how long showers or baths go on. I haven't had a foggy bathroom mirror or condensation on windows in years. DYH, I dont have an opinion on the Apple Watch but hope you don’t mind if I respond to Nini, about my Garmin Watch. Last year, the band on my old Garmin Foreunner 110, which I only used for running, broke. Because of the design, the band is actually part of the watch so I couldn’t just order a new band. I looked online and the replacement was something like $50! What?! The watch was fairly old so didn’t seem worth it to pay $50 for a band at that point. So I called and they said they could replace it for $25 but I still had to send the whole thing in. Before I got around to doing that, dh surprised me with a new one. While not an Apple Watch (I actually get asked that about my Garmin all the time), it does receive text messages and phone calls. I’m sure it does a few other things but that’s all Ive found convenient. I do wear it 90% of the time because I rarely get dressed up and I like all the exercise features. I use it for running but also like to see how many steps I take, how much I’m sleeping, etc. The nice thing about having it synced with my phone is that if my phone is in my purse or elsewhere in the house, etc, I know right away if someone is texting or calling me. If I’m talking with someone, I can discreetly look at my watch to see who it is and make a mental note to call or text later. It definitely doesn’t have all the features of an Apple Watch, and honestly I don’t need that. But if you aren’t keen on replacing yours (I would be annoyed too!), maybe look at the Garmin. Mine is the Forerunner 35.

My brother has an induction cooktop that I really hate. It's a 5+ year old Siemens/Bosch model. The touch interface is super annoying when cooking food that needs precise temperature control. I recently had the chance to try it extensively, and I always find myself furiously stabbing at the controls trying to make adjustments that inevitably take way too long. And while it has 17 or 18 power levels, that still doesn't feel sufficiently fine grained. Nonetheless, for his upcoming kitchen remodel, I am recommending he get another induction range. Overall, induction has a lot going for it and the lack of a good user interface isn't an intrinsic problem with the heating technology as such. There certainly are manufacturers that make ranges with knobs. In my brother's case, it's likely going to be a LaCanche, as that range overall is a great fit for him. There is one remaining issue though, that would keep me (but not my brother) from buying induction. I have now had the chance to use a wok on his current induction top. And despite trying to give it the benefit of the doubt, I have come to the conclusion that flat-bottom woks simply don't work. The heat distribution is all wrong, and the wok spetula can't follow the shape of the wok. While it certainly is nice that the induction top has plenty of power, I either burn food in the wok or sauté instead of stir fry; often I do both at the same time. A round-bottom wok handles very differently and has a much saner heat distribution with the hot spot in the center. As a result, I much prefer my Bluestar gas range for wok cooking. It's effortless with a good burner and a good wok. Supposedly, there now are special induction burners compatible with round-bottom woks. But I don't have any first-hand experience, yet. So, maybe, that would change my opinion. I am also a little concerned that some of these burners are only compatible with one manufacturer-provided wok. That could be rather limiting. Until these things have been sorted out, if you need wok cooking, stick with gas. For everything else, induction is a serious contender.

I remember reading an article about ten years or so ago about Martha Stewart going to MIT and seeing a countertop surface that essentially was what Gaggenau is now making. I tried to find the article but couldn't locate it online.

How do you tell it what temp for the area that the pan is on?

Definitely watch the video. It's unbelievable. Set down a rectangular griddle pan on the right of the surface, and a rectangular control button appears on the right side of the control screen. Set down a round pot in the upper left, and yes, suddenly a round control button appears. Move the round pot to the other side of the cooktop, and the control button moves with it.

eandhl, I'm pretty sure the 36hrs would have to drop way down to somewhere around 5 and I just don't have the energy for that.

I read the post and thought, "well, that's neat," then watched the video and all other thoughts were pushed aside. It's that cool.

If you had relatives with a pacemaker would you be at all apprehensive about using induction around them? I have heard that supposedly you would have to practically lay on the surface to experience ill effects, but I sure wouldn't want to find out otherwise the hard way!

Drats. We are just starting to plan a kitchen remodel and could incorporate one of these if it were available in the U.S. Now I'm pissed off at the idea of settling for what is available here when better technology is available. We can't afford to buy the U.S. version now and swap it out in a few years - that would be so wasteful.

macybaby, should we have a pity party? I almost went with the Kenmore slide in last year but Sears has two prices. Regular price and $800 off. I gave up, bought my gas stove which I love (mostly) and I'm cooking and baking stuff I haven't made in YEARS. Maybe by the time these are mainstream I will have one. and maybe by that time my electricity will be dependable anough that I won't care if I don't have a gas stove in the house. Or maybe I will keep the gas stove and put it in the basement. Or maybe I will be in the Home by then and someone else will be doing my cooking. Oh, I hope not. I've eaten there before... YUK!

--sigh-- I wish I could get my hands on an induction stove for a week, then I'd know if I wanted one. We are electric-not-gas here, but I am all about knobs and simplicity, and the sight of that touch pad reminds me a little too much of my i.p.o.d. Fine for surfing the net, but to me it doesn't seem intuitive for cooking. I would probably hate it at first, that's why I need one for a week.

But the zoneless (or whatever you call it) feature is TOO cool! Gah, it probably costs as much as all my appliances put together. But if I'm going to eventually get induction, might as well wait for one like this; makes much more sense than the ones with circles if you ask me.
