Just returned from a tawdry evening, where we scarfed ribs with our fingers and drank ever-descending grades of scotch. Culminating at the vintage our host saw fit to use as lighter fluid when the fire needed a-rekindling.
When we get together, conversation ever turns to food. This night being as it was, slurring turned to jello shots.
Jello shots, I hardly knew ye. Those of my youth were the highest proof and cheapest liquor we had - think private label version of Bacardi 151 - coagulated in a pallid, thick-skinned from-a-box jello, usually some sickly variant of lime.
Disabused, and soon, was I. Apparently while I was poisoning myself with cheap jello shots and pitchers of beer, as a below-average Cal student, others were educating themselves in the finer sort of jello shot. Often as sorority sisters in Southern universities, learning the proper way to smoke a cigarette, wield silverware, and sip currant-flavored jello shots filled with mascarpone cheese. What! You heard me, they intoned, showing flashes of their haughty Sigma Kappa Zappa selves. "Gourmet jello shots."
I didn't get any recipes, because I was busy making silly faces at our hostess sampling her cigar. But I'm sure there are some party grrrls and guys in our midst. Do you have any favorites in the Ludicrous Libations department? Ways to get a party going, besides spiking the punch?
Hey, what was that thing with the watermelon and the rum?
