Claire, I saw your reference to Jonathan's Spoons in your post on spatulas and looked up the site. I have been keeping my eye open for utensils like these for a while.

Do you own others besides the cookie spatula that you would recommend?

Has anyone else tried them? Have favorites?

Yes, I have several others, and love them all. I have a ladle, some short wide serving spoons, a slotted spoon, folding tongs and folding salad tongs. (The cookie spatula is my new favorite for all the reasons I listed.) All of these are favorites...The short wide spoons are wonderful for serving, as are the folding tongs. The ladle is a most elegant solution for dipping soups, and they are the type of thing that feels so good in your hand, you don't want to put them down. I treasure every one. I've been collecting them for a while, and am currently looking at the 3 inch spoons for my next purchase.

I believe it's a Jonathan Spoons blackened ladle that Rachel Ray uses on her show (if you ever watch her); I know her silicone lazy spoons are modeled after Jonathan Spoons.

They ship immediately, and the customer service is great. Every one is well made, and I love that you can order them right or left handed. (IMHO, you'd be happy with any of them.) If you do decide to order, be sure to let me know what you think of them when they show up at your house, once you've held them in your hand. You're in for a real treat!

Moon Spoons are another line made by Jonathan. You can check them out; I really like their little serving spoons, and am fond of the K design or the Sunbeam.

Shambo, I normally use hominy grits, but I have also used polenta, which I think is corn grits. It's good either way, and I make this recipe a lot, which is why I have it memorized! I make it frequently because it's the best leftover breakfast that I make and it stores well. I only recently started adding sausage to it at the beginning. I used to add the sausage when I reheated it and then decided to add it at the beginning. Lars

No, I haven't needed to service the washer or dryer at all. (It probably helps that I bought Mieles, as they've been trouble-free little workhorses. I'm opinionated about buying as much quality you can afford at the outset, to avoid problems later on, which has served me very well in this instance.) As far as accessing the dryer vent, I haven't actually ever done that. It vents down through a crawl space and out the foundation of our house. (You make me wonder however if it's time to go check on that, to see how much build-up there might be.) I don't seem to get an overabundance of dust, and am pretty meticulous about keeping the mesh lint screen cleaned after every dryer load, so that's probably helped. The washer is a tight fit, but can be moved. We need two people to actually pick it up (a couple of inches) to move it out, but have only needed to move it once in the time it's been there. (That was in the beginning when I had the sheet metal pan made, which took some time to procure and set into place. I also went the extra mile and bought metal mesh supply lines for peace of mind, knowing that moving the washer or dryer would take some planning!) The turn-off valve is at the back of the washer (behind the laundry basket) and rather hard for me to access as I'm short and don't have long arms. The Mieles are deep, rather than wide and because of this, I keep a step ladder (just in case) at that end of my home in my closet, so I can reach it quickly if the need ever arises. Hopefully it never will, but I did plan for the eventuality. This is absolutely some of the best space planning I've ever done. I can't tell you how easy it is to deal with laundry at this stage of my life...you'll just have to experience it yourself! If I ever have to move from here, I would repeat every detail exactly as is, in a heartbeat. Good luck!

Ginger25 and jenhp: "Blizzard" is warmer than the pure white or organic white from Caesarstone. I think it works better with the rusty Danby marble than those purer whites. Here are some closeups of the Caesarstone, as requested (these are in artificial light): You have to get REALLY close up (3 inches in this case) to see the fine speckles. From farther back but as close as a foot, it reads solid white: Elba1, the uppers are 37 inches tall. The trim between the cabinets and ceiling is under 2 inches, just enough to tie the cabinets to a little bit of a crooked ceiling. There is also a 1 inch light rail underneath the uppers, to hide the under cabinet lights. The ceiling is 8 feet. I thought about incorporating some glass, but I wanted to avoid breaking up the space, for a more contemporary look. If my ceilings were higher, I would have considered a top glass section as well!

WOW, maydl, I decided to pop into Kitchens and was surprised to see my name! I only put the information together as it was created by everyone, but I can see you have taken it to a completely new level! Congratulations on turning out such a well-planned temporary kitchen...I pray that you don't need it for months on end like we did. It helps immensely that you have a sink, so you're ahead of the curve when it comes to that! I'm impressed with your lineup of small appliances; can you use more than one at a time? Whenever I tried to use more than one, I would flip the breaker every time and my well-laid meal plans were lost. (BTW, my screenname is my beloved Golden's as well!) We started calling our temp kitchen The Break Room, as with the fridge, microwave, table and clothes rack, it looked like the break room in any office USA. Julie, it looks like you're functioning well and even have counter space. I'm so impressed by all of you...I remember the day my sink and faucet was installed in the kitchen and I had water for the first time in months. I"M GRATEFUL EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR MY KITCHEN! There was a nice selection of Hardwood Utensils.
Spatula's, Spoons , etc.

They were very nicely Crafted, at a good price.

I don't know if they can be Googled ?

I first learned about Jonathan's spoons 12 years ago or so when I bought a pottery soup tureen at a local pottery shop. The tureen, which is beautiful, was $55 and the owner said "That's a great deal as it comes with a Jonathan Spoon".

I bought it for the beauty of the tureen but it's nice to have a lovely carved cherry ladle to go with it- which I see now is over forty dollars so I guess I did get a deal.

Claire, I'm going to place an order. I'd love to try a ladle and a spatula..but before I do, I wonder if you have any of the blackened pieces. If so, do you like them as well/better?

DS & fiancee are coming to visit soon and I was thinking of getting the black ladle for them.

amck, I don't have any of the blackened pieces, but am lusting a little over their wide ladle. The ladle I have has the holes, so I wouldn't mind having one without them. I'm certain the quality is very good across the board, for any of their pieces. Enjoy your new utensils, and don't forget to let us know how you like them!

Carol, are you left handed? I know you'll like them as well. They have some of the fastest shipping I've ever experienced.

Wait till you hold them in your hand. You won't want to put them down!

Absolutely I'm left-handed (and darned awkward sometimes in the kitchen).

I have a left-handed set of spoons and spatulas my DH made me out of our own cherry from the farm, but they've been used so much they're cracking. Since DH has medical issues, Jonathan's spoons are a wonderful option. I can't wait to receive them. I was pleasantly surprised at the shipping cost, very minimal.

Beautiful! I love the butter board. Given Lou's woodcarving skills, he could go into the spoon carving business too.

I just bought yesterday a beautiful hand crafted spoon made from an Olive Tree Wood from Italy...found at Marshall's its so pretty I hate to put it in a Gravy (sauce) pot !
