sharp OTC microwave (R1214) owners - help

Hi, I just installed my microwave and noticed there is a

hole without a screw in it, can you check yours and let me know if you have that screw on yours?

I will also call Sharp but that is not until monday.

Take one of the other screws out to check for length.
They are usually around 1/2 inch long self tapping sheet metal screws.

Any hardware store should have them.
Since it is on the back the style does not really matter.

Mine too! I'd never checked it until reading your post (ours has been installed and used on a multiple-times-daily basis since last May), but there is no screw in the exact same spot. I assume it's fine because it was installed by the (authorized) people from whom we purchased it, and they were pretty fastidious about the installation of the appliances.

I'm not worried about it, but I'm not telling you to not worry about it. I just want you to know mine is the same and mine is okay. I trust the people who installed it (they've taken good care of us).

Somewhere (at least in 2007) there was an application guide on Sharp's website that described various ways the unit could be mounted. That information is worth reading. In my case the cabinet above is 15 inches deep and the amount of the microwave oven that protrudes is about the same as the amount of a nearby Wolf wall oven that overlays its (deeper) cabinet. I recall using a wood spacer at the back to adjust the exact exposure. I see no reason why a 12-inch cabinet won't work; the screws that hold the front up that mount through the cabinet above are less than 12 inches from the wall. If your sheetrock is removed for renovation I would advise adding some blocking back there to maximize the mounting strength. I bought mine from AJ Madison, as I recall, and the only minor issue was a side screw that had stripped its hole leading to a rattle when the unit ran. As I didn't notice this over the year it ran sitting on blocks in my family room until I had mounted the unit for the "final" time, I just pushed some Styrofoam up between the side and the next cabinet wall and eliminated the noise. The unit mounts to a metal panel that is attached to the wall. The shipping carton is cut in a designated way and this helps one position the (heavy) unit so it can hook onto the metal panel. Then it is necessary to fix the front screws that mount in the bottom of the cabinet. Do not try to use these screws to pull up the unit into position. They are strong enough to hold it, but their thread form is not strong enough to work against that weight dynamically. Instead, using books or preferably a cabinet jack (not too expensive if you hunt for it on the web), hold the front up against the cabinet and then insert the screws. Preferably use a bit of heat resistant (non dripping is the point) lube such a NeverSieze. The unit works as expected for a microwave oven. Like most microwave ovens, it loses its clock setting during power drops. The MW manufacturers, like those who manufactured VCRs, should have planned for longer time periods to keep the clock up. (Oh wait; those are the same manufacturers.) I have noticed that sometimes when I set the cook time hurriedly and move on, it turns out to be set way too high. I have learned to double check. It might be some button bounce, once an issue for personal computer on/off buttons, or it might be me. The bottom lighting onto black soapstone is a bit dim for any detail work compared to LED strip lighting, but OK as a nighttime aid. I have a toaster oven on the counter below it. This eventually caused the adhesive that holds on the bottom front trim to release. Use of an automotive emblem neoprene adhesive strip cured that issue, but in general I would recommend that if such positioning is used, the oven door be closed after removing the toast. I certainly wouldn't suggest using the toaster oven as an open broiler below the unit. Otherwise it should be fine. The outlet for its power should be in the cabinet above it. It is best if you provide it its own circuit. The door hinges on the left. Overall, a nice unit for its specific niche. Integration results are best with careful planning. kas

As an update, I should note that my original ca. 2010 Sharp 1214 OTC developed an issue this past Spring with a stuck microswitch among the three that are actuated by the door closing. The symptom was apparent failure to stop when the door was opened. This would, of course, be a problem with a microwave source, but in actuality, only the lamp and fan kept running. The MW source (magnetron) has more redundant safeguards. While waiting for parts I obtained a new model of the same unit and installed it. I have repaired the old unit and kept it for a spare. As it turned out, the microswitch was only a tad gummy, and once freed worked normally. I replaced it anyway, and cleaned the interior spaces (lightly greasy) and venting paths. I think the new model has a brighter display, so the old model's display may have faded some (lost contrast). I don't think the display would be cost-effective to replace due to being buried in the door. Although I tore the unit apart to get to everything (other than the door interior), the microswitches are fairly accessible with just the cover removed. Dissassembly manuals are available on the Internet, and parts still available from Sharp's designated distributor. I also obtained an example of the recommended microwave leakage test meter, and checked out the old MW. No measurable leakage relative to Sharp's standard of 1 mW/cm2, much less the US Government's limit of 5 mW/cm2. I could only get a reading inside the MW's shell next to the magnetron output, so I think the design maintains a safe environment even after significant age.

Sharp designed the drawer to put the movement in the cooking pattern rather than a turntable -- I suspect that is part of the reason for the price (new technology) rather than just the drawer mechanism. I can put a frozen item in or leftovers and loosen the top (so steam gets out and the sensor works), push sensor reheat and start and not have to tend to whatever it is. If I smell it cooking a lot, I may stop it 30 seconds early (maybe enough steam didn't escape?). Love mine, although I would get the taller one if I had to replace it (do you still have a choice - or is that old stock vs new stock?). I know there is room for a plug and cord in back, but I don't remember the exact shape. I sympathize -- I picked the only warming drawer that would fit in a 21" base (Dacor, which can go outdoors or in a bathroom, so it fits vanity cabinets) and there is no wiggle room on the plug with that one. You get it in the right spot or the drawer won't close flush. ;-) I don't remember the miccro drawer feeling that tight (23-1/2 would be fairly tight in a 24" deep cabinet minus the depth of the back). My warming drawer specs and installation guide showed a notch in one corner of the back where the outlet had to be placed. I don't remember anything that exacting for the micro, and I couldn't tell from the specs either. I suspect it has clearance for that plug across the back -- which could be up to 2" depth (just measured my mixer and toaster plugs LOL). Worst case, you might be able to place the plug above or below the drawer itself and create the clearance you need. Can you find a place that has one on display that would pull it out and let you measure and see and measure exactly what you would need to work with?

In looking at the specs online, it would appear the lower fascia of the MW is ~ 2.5". You could use masking tape or blue painter's tape to mask a line across your existing cabinets 2.5" above their current bottom edge (assuming you have 16-18" height from countertop to cabinet) . A couple of issues to consider: 1) as zorro pointed out, the you would need a cabinet above the MW that is 14" shorter than the surrounding cabinets to offset the height of the MW. 2) standard wall cabinet depth = 12". This MW is 15" deep. So you might consider going with 15" deep cabinets for the entire run that the MW sits on. Hi RMKitchen, I see, it's not part of the installation hardware. I guess it's been assembled correctly if yours is also the same.

Can I ask you if your MW door tends to want to close on it's own, because the door doesn't swing pass 90 degrees, it tends to swing back and hit my arms. I may have to lower the level MW front screws. But maybe it's good it sort of auto closes so if I drop something and get down to pick it up, it won't hit my head when I get back up..

Yes! Yes! Yes! Exactly the same, poorowner. Won't open past ninety degrees and self-closes. Now that I did complain about to the installers and they said "that's the way it's designed -- the self-close[-ish -- doesn't close the whole way] is for safety reasons." I still think it's a pain, but I bet I'd find it even more of a pain if I hit my head on the corner of an open door! It is kinda annoying, though ....

Did you install it yourself? I am so impressed! Based on what I see, what I've experienced and what I've been told by our installers, you must have done it perfectly because you're having the same issues as we!

I'm not kidding, I really am impressed.

Yes RMKitchen, I installed it myself with my wife helping.. it was a bit of a pain. There is a slight issue with the template vs the actual thing. It was hard to get it onto the bracket and took several tries, let's just say it was "exciting" and we are glad we didn't drop it, and installed without a scratch. It turned out really well just perfectly centered under my cabinet.

However, I installed too high, I planned everything based on measurement specs but it is 1" higher than my other cabinetry as planned. I should have added a 1" spacer on the bottom of my cabinet but I am not sure if that would have helped a whole lot, and I would not want it lower than that for appearance's sake. I didn't realize the bottom of the microwave is so thick. That's OK, I just have to stand a bit closer to it I suppose, just worried about the wife using it. It's really too late to fix that just for 1-inch of height.

My OTR microwave before was LOWER than the cabinets so that was very easy to use, but it would get in the way of cooking sometimes.

Things I didn't like are the plasticy door and the pathetic dim lights under (the "task light" is a joke) and a little dim inside too. For the relatively high price, but I really like how it looks -- it seems fairly powerful for the size so far.
(BTW, factory has 20W bulbs but it does say you can use 30W max bulbs I suppose it would be small a boost in brightness)

I took some pictures.. my lens have a fisheye effect and the install is more plumb than the picture shows :)

I don't have an up-close shot (I can take one later), but:

Our cabinetmaker designed the cabinet atop the microwave so that the bottom of the microwave would fall in line with the light rail.

We agree about the lighting! Why they differentiate between accent & task is beyond me (they're clearly both "accent"!).

My biggest issue with this microwave, however, is how far out is protrudes. As soon as it went in I didn't like it, but I couldn't justify having a hole cut in the drywall and some possible reframing so the microwave could be recessed an inch or so. If any of us had noticed that in the beginning, then while the drywall guys were here, the electricians, no big deal. After everyone was done? No.

While it no longer "jumps out at me" (visually), I confess I still do notice it .... Live and learn! I was telling someone earlier today that I'm the sort of person who needed to have a practice remodel so I could do the "real" one right. Guess what? Can only afford to do it once, so this'll be my lesson.

I love your cabinets! What a beautiful door style and that color is rich. I look forward to seeing more of your kitchen.

Rmkitchen I know this is an old post. I’m curious how deep you cabinets are? How deep do you recommend to be still able to open the door?
