Mustard Yellow and Dozen Roses help

My husband and I are building a new home and are trying to decide on paint colors. I hate yellow, but for some reason have fallen in love with this Mustard Yellow color! We've matched this mustard yellow to our floors and cabinets (chocolate brown) and it looks terrific. We also loved this Red (Behr, Dozen Roses).

Our living room has 10 ft ceilings and flows right into the kitchen/dining room (one big room). Both of these are very bold colors. Can we do one color in the living room and one in the dining/kitchen?

I love bold colors but am afraid it's going to be just too much!

We love bold colors too, our house has a very open floor plan and the LR is BM Pine Grove (brown toned green), entry is BM Med-evil Green (kind of an acid green) and the kitchen is a F&B yellow that is too darn timid for our taste, so I think we're going to repaint it BM Myan Gold. I think bold colors do best together, so I say go for it.

Here's a pic of our red hutch, C2 Fez and the F&B gold (recall the name, sorry). The Myan Gold is the spoltches on the wall. Our kitchen has 10' ceilings too, and I think the height helps to lower the intensity of bold colors. Also consider what kind of light you're going to have, we have windows on 3 sides in the kitchen and LR.

I would be cautious. Couple things pop forward as concerns.

1) Color association. You may not see it now or maybe not ever, but I'd have to ask you if at some point it might feel a lil like McDonald's and not the mrsgordo's residence.

2) Intensity. Those are two intense colors. To a point, they will balance each other and no doubt *go* together but will you be able to live with it. The more area yellow covers it grows more intense exponentially. People err when choosing yellow more than any other color.

Wonder if a toned down version of mustard would be a better choice for the walls. Or could you find another way to incorporate Mustard besides wall color.

have you looked done a search on helpmefind for yellow and yellow blend climbers. I don't know of such a root stock--my guess is that it "reverted." Sometimes, for instance, a pink rose will throw out a red bloom (vice versa). Maybe something in the soil/amount of light/water, etc. changed.

Is that ketchup&mustard? I don't like the name at all. It's nota rose I grow called half time ( not a favorite name either ) 1/2 time is more thorny than this is but every bit as beautiful. Vintage has a virus free version listed. I put pictures of my 1/2 time up in the rose gallery recently around thanksgiving. Not the best bloomer, but the blooms I get are wonderful.

Hey Kate, I finally SP'd Ketchup & Mustard this year. I know others really like this one, but I was not a fan. Harsh coloring just didn't seem to go with its bloom form, and it was a BS magnet here in the land of heat & humidity. George Burns is my only other red/yellow combo. It took a couple of years in my garden for George to grow on me, but I am rather fond of him now. He's grown into a profuse bloomer; blooms last a long time on the bush; he stays rather short, but full; average disease resistance here...not the best or the worst for BS (but I do spray him here and there). GB didn't seem to have much fragrance to me when he was young, but that has improved over time...still not what I would describe as strong, though. In cool weather, the yellow is much more pronounced, but still fades to mostly red/white over time. Warning...he is armed with big thorns...one of my thorniest roses. Thank you, Leo. I am thrilled that you have joined the forum. We actually met a couple of years ago and you graciously gave my friend and me a tour of this fantastic rose garden. You are not only a knowledgable and dedicated curator but also a gracious person. I mentioned you in my comment up on this thread. I posted the photo of this gorgeous rose on helpmefind.com and a couple of rosarians, as it were from Australia, contested that it's Mme de Watteville. I eventually had to remove the photo I posted there because I didn't want to cause any controversy and one HMF member felt very strongly that it was not Mme de Watteville. Either way it's gorgeous. I think the short answer is "it depends".

Funcolors makes a great point that it's not so much just the colors you choose, but their value and intensity as well.

I happen to love mustard yellow with red too. We used BM Wilmington Tan, which is one of their historical colors. It is a muddy looking mustard color, which is what I wanted, and we used it in the main living area spaces in our home. Our kitchen/dining are is a brick red color (SW Flower Pot). And, this area is open and visible from the great room. I think it all works because both of these colors are toned down and muted from an all-out yellow and red appearance.
