Just bought a chest freezer..need to fill!

Hello everyone :)

We just bought a 15 cu. ft. chest freezer that will be delivered next week. How in the world do we fill it so that it will run efficiently without bankrupting our food budget? I know that eventually it will really help us save by stocking up and cooking ahead, but the thought of a half empty freezer wasting energy turns my stomach.

Thanks for you suggestions.

I made lots of soups, stews and chilis to stock in mine. Also great to buy bulk meat. Get a family pack of hamburger or chicken etc.. and break it down into meal size bags, if you are having company take out 2. Sometimes you can get deals at local meat plants on cases of sausage, hot dogs or chicken breasts.

I'm no expert and don't have a freezer myself but I think I read that they are more efficient when full, even if it's just ice in there. So if you can only fill it up half way, try jugs of water in there for ice. Can someone confirm this or set me straight?

Terry Flynn-did you have to move the electrical and water lines when switching over from the Viking to the Samsung? I have replaced the fan in my Viking (circa 2006, but not plugged in until 2010) and the freezer still too warm but now the alarm goes off every 15 to 24 hours. I can’t get a good estimate or diagnosis of the problem other than “maybe a slow leak” and “it will cost thousands to replace.” Living where I do, I am at the mercy of one repair company. Getting up at 3 am to turn an alarm off is getting old. Had planned to let it just operate to it’s death, but it would be nice to know if it could be repaired and last awhile longer. Otherwise looking at a counter depth Bosch with some rework of the cabinetry and as I said, electrical and plumbing. That alone will be close to $5000 and if I could repair this one with some guarantees…..oy

Lol, I know that picture of the bear. A poster on another forum I frequent has that as their avatar. I guess the Yeti is photoshopped as it does not have the same shadow as the bear. Cute any who. I think any group, political, social, even work related...at the office/workplace, will stomp their feet and if a perk is eliminated. My work eliminated all Starbucks and chain fast food receipts years ago. (except for ShakeShack). NYC mom and pop is encouraged, ...buy and support local. (I don't do 'Sitbucks' or any chain fast food) I do try and practice-what-i-preach. No plastics or p-towels within reason. Cloth and filtered home bottled. Do what seems right. Less waste and USA or local when possible. Coolers? I'm a sucker for good design/branding. I did more research than I care to admit a year ago. Thinking we should replace our two coolers that have served our needs for almost 20 years. 3 day road trip to our beach house. (2 days, 15 hour ferry, 3 hours to the home). Sometimes add a day for foul weather. I watched the ice test videos and never took the bait for the Yeti. It is, I bet, a lifetime investment, but maybe if our wheels and handles broke? or cracked and stopped performing we may jump?...not sure. I do like that you have it Lars. And the BGE. I would go that route as well but our old 20 year grill/smoker is still kicking and no longer babied being left out years round now. (so well built being so old unlike recent models I've noticed). I'm OCD about travel and packing so I know all the tricks for frozen to last 4-5 days. I would accept this as a gift, lol. A 40 dollar 5 gallon bucket...another 100 for a lid and accessories, : ) Ha ha, my dozen five gallon buckets are for utility and hauling poop and compost and stacked filthy, then hosed off and bleached occasionally....

(on the top. liming wax is mixed into the grain) here's the original two tone finish and how those handles are supposed to look! The 6 or 7 cu ft just looks so small but I'm not sure the 13 is too big. Sam's has a small one that may do for both of them starting out. Knowing the life span of appliances now, they could use a smaller one until their family grows (and the freezer dies) and then upgrade to a bigger upright. The 35 # per cu ft sounds reasonable if you are storing roasts, bulk items, etc. But if you have bags of chicken strips, fish, etc that seems a little heavy. We are all tall (5' 10" to 6'4") and have SxS fridges. The kids came with their houses and are regular depth with ice maker NOT in the door. Ours is counter depth with ice maker in the door and we have more storage space in the fridge than they do. The one DD mentioned that she can't even get a frozen pizza in hers. WE do not have that problem. Because of our height, I'm not sure any of us would like a bottom freezer.

Great idea! you are right they are more efficient when full so if there is too much space anything in it helps although a pain when you need something below.

Buy ice cream in bulk!

I also keep a platter from Pampered Chef that keeps things cold in my extra freezer. It needs to freeze for a few hours before using, and I always forget to do it when I need to, so now I just keep it in there. The same with the tub for my ice cream maker. Who wants to wait the 6+ hours for that thing to freeze up?

We have a big chest freezer. I raise vegetables in garden and we also raise beef and lamb so our freezer is, at times, full to the brim and other times, it may be half full. When I want to keep it full to run efficiently, I freeze the two ltr pop bottles full of ice tea or water. Coincidentally, this is usually during the summer which really works great as I can take out the frozen water/tea and put in cooler which helps keep the other items cold and it is great to drink. I also buy bread at the day old bakeries to keep in the freezer.

Hello everyone!
I'm enjoying reading all of your ideas! Please keep sending them along! I can't wait to get my freezer so I can start filling it! I've been longing to make things in advance to freeze in meal size portions, make baby food, and to try things like making homemade frozen pizzas, cookie dough, etc. I really like the frozen ice tea idea! We drink a lot of ice tea and water in my house and that will work great!

I do frozen pizzas all the time, they dont need cooking before freezing. I have also been making ahead and freezing sausage rolls, cabbage rolls, pirogies with all differnt fillings, lasagna, shepherds pie, chicken wings, burritos, they are all great for tired nights all you need is a day or 2 free for cooking non stop but it is worth it.

6' 2" even. No Problem. But you have to use a ramp out of 2 X 6 's to get "it" in there!! (Fold before rigor mortis sets in)
