Is the smaller, more difficult tumor of less consequence? I don't understand the order of surgeries.

Did the doctor tell you the name/type of tumors? Are they benign or does he know yet?

The smaller one has more potential for problems as it gets bigger, but more potential for complications upon removal. He said it cannot stay, but because it's not urgent, he can deal with the other, easier one. He said he wants to take the big one out first because it's so large. If it hasn't infiltrated my sinus cavity then removing it will prevent that from happening.

We were shocked at how big the hole he cuts in my head is going to be. He said it was because it has to be bigger than the tumour. I thought they would just suck it out somehow or cut it up and remove it. That part is icky.

Thanks for the update Susan. I was wondering where you were with this. As said before, We're pulling for you!

I hope all goes well. So they can't take the tumor out through the nasal cavity? I always thought the worst part of that would be the yards of packing they stuffed up your nose, I think I would feel like I was suffocating.

I've typed a message to you three times, but it never seems right. Keep us posted as to how you are feeling and exactly when the surgery will be. Know that you have the heartfelt good wishes, thoughts and prayers of all your friends at the KT. I'm very sorry you are facing all this trouble, but it sounds like you have a good doctor, one you like.

I hope that didn't sound blunt,, if so, it was totally unintended! I was multi-tasking when I wrote it. He said we can't go into this cavity that he's talking about because there is a high possibility it would lead to a fatal stroke.

Thanks for explaining the reason for doing the less complicated surgery first.

When will this take place? How many similar operations has this surgeon done? (Can you talk to any people who have had the same or similar procedures? Good old 'self-help group' concept!)

Side note: I had three sinus surgeries over a thirty year period. I know from 'packing'! First one helped a little, but it was so long ago that the procedure wasn't very technologically advanced. Second one, the MD was too timid and I had no improvement. Third one was 'the charm'; top man in this field, AND techniques/imaging had become precise. I hope this will give some small encouragement. I know sinus surgery is a nit compared to brain surgery.

Chisue, I meant to ask how many surgeries like this he has done, but I forgot to. I was thinking of calling the office and asking about that. I doubt he would put me in touch with anyone who has had the surgery, he's a man of few words and a little abrupt. Mind you, he's supposed to be an excellent surgeon and that's the main thing. I might try a forum- he thinks they're both meningiomas, but he won't know for sure until the biopsy.

He said the surgery would take place in about two months, but I'm going to try to make sure it's after Easter. I always have the family here for Easter and I don't want to miss out on doing that, with all of this going on...

I don't envy you, having sinus troubles for 30 plus years. That must have been an ordeal! I get what you're saying about improved techniques and imaging. They can do a lot now that they couldn't do years ago.

I see on the Mayo Clinic website that there is an American Brain Tumor Association. Sounds very active. Maybe some leads to groups near you, or a way to provide online chat?

I was reminded of the sinus surgeries because they, too, have risk of optical impairment. Glad to read that your tumors are likely NOT glimoa's.

While I'm pleased to hear of the good news, I'm sad that you have this major problem to deal with.

It's a good thing that your doctor is fairly forthcoming in dealing with the various aspects of the situation with you. I hope that it helps your feelings of satisfaction as you approach the issue.

I think that I'm inclined to the view that if there may be an opening for the surgery before Easter, that you take it, unless their guidance leads you to feel that there's little additional risk in the delay.
