I'd much rather do without my cell phone than my computer!

Have had my cellphone for about three years and have only made about 6 calls - so it is obvious which I could do without!

You can have my cellphone. Carrying it around is a lot like being on a chain.

Definitely would get rid of the cell phone.

I never even remember to turn my cell phone on. The other day it was ringing and I was wondering where the music was coming from! I guess that means the computer.

Cell phone, mainly given by son and friend a while ago, mainly for my security for a senior living alone, hasn't been activated.

So - neither is working ... but I'm not borrowing a cellphone like I am this (library) computer.

I've had a computer for a good ten years (so have become something of an addict, I fear) ... and a cellphone for less than a couple of months.

Sometimes when I see someone with cellphone dangling from their belt, I comment that I see that they're on their leash today.

When they look at me quizzically, or ask what I'm talking about ... when I point to their cellphone, often I don't need to say anything, and they get the message quite quickly: so I figure that it's lying just slightly under the surface of their consciousness ... (waiting to be roused?). But, being talkative, I usually respond that I see that they're carrying their cellphone. The same game used to work with pagers, as well.

You don't suppose that "cell phone" has anything to do with jail, do you?

I love them both. My phone is connected to the internet and I access my email, facebook, etc on it. So I guess I could do without my computer for a week.

Dee is right, the cellphone is important for emergencies when you are out. It has been extremely helpful to me on more than one occasion. Otherwise, I find it a nuisance.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would be lost without the computer. The few times it has been "down" over the years was awful! What an important resource it is.

I only take my cellphone when we go out of town. The rest of the time it sits in my kitchen junk drawer. I charge it once in a while, just in case.

I rarely use my cell phone.....maybe 3 times this last year. I'm certainly not one who has a cell phone glued to my ear by any means.

I would have to say my computer. Maybe a week without it would break my addiction. The cell phone I'd love to get rid of, but that's the way I stay in touch with all my family that live out of state.

Given that it's possible to have internet access on a cellphone, it makes a rhetorical question easy to answer. Clearly the cellphone w/internet would be the preference.

However my TracFone doesn't have web access. And I don't intend to pay the price for a phone that does. I use my computer for work purposes, although I guess there's other alternatives should it go down. My cell is primarily for safety and convenience. So in a way, it's kind of like asking whether you'd give up a work tool or a winter coat for a week? I can live without a cell. I can live without a computer. But I'm pragmatic and enjoy both. So the computer in the end wins out.

Now Joyful, your leash joke is outdated. That was well-taken in the days of pagers, but not with a cell.

Cell phones have a purpose and a good purpose for most people since today the cost can easily be under $10/mo. I don't advocate a cells for everyone type society that we've become, but to not have one by a person like you is inexcusable. And I mean a WORKING ONE! If you pointed to my cell and suggested I'm on a "leash" I'd set you straight quickly. My cell is for MY convenience, safety and protection, not others. It's not for access by anyone and everyone either. Few people have my cell number and that's how it will stay. I block my number when I call someone I don't want to have my number. But in a manner of speaking it can be considered a weapon, a shield or whatever type of protection you want. If I'm in a bad neighborhood and am attacked, I can call for help. If I fall on the ice and break something, the "leash" can help me get help. And it can also (and BTW DOES) save me MONEY. I've said several times how I call ahead if I'm making a surprise visit to someone to make sure that it's not a wasted trip, aka wasted gas. If I'm going somewhere I have called and found out they're not open yet so I rerouted and saved wasted time and money. Is it enough to offset the few dollars a month cost? Probably not, no, I'm sure it's not but it's nice to have costs defrayed, isn't it? A few weeks ago I came upon an overturned SUV in the road. I was able to call for assistance. The people were still in there. There's been a couple times I've had trouble finding a place and was able to call, rather than go all the way home, call, get better directions and try again, possibly even to no avail. OK, enough examples. But you know these are all realistic possibilities with you so don't let your stubbornness override common sense.

I fought getting a cell phone for years. Didn't want to spend the money. Couldn't justify it. Plus I don't like just talking on a phone. Finally, there were enough situations where a cell would have been very handy and common sense slapped me in the face enough times to get me to at least try one out, and the cheapest way to go was prepaid and it's been a great success. No, I won't get a contract phone. I won't buy new phones every year. But it's time for me to have one for my convenience, safety and protection and it's time for you to quit fighting it and give in. You're alone in a vehicle often, like me, have some physical limitations, though not as much as me and you have reason to protect your health and well-being. Don't let a worn-out joke keep you from realizing common sense my friend. Having an unactivated cell phone is worthless. You know that. If you break down, get in an accident or something, you can't use an unactivated cell to call for help and I shouldn't have to tell you that. I was glad to hear the kids got you a phone. I thought you'd find out that there's use for them and the cost is insignificant. But to not even activate it.... come on! My dad died with a closet full of new clothes that he wouldn't wear and died wearing rags. I don't want you to die in a blizzard with an unactivated cell phone in your hand. It's not some kind of trophy to frugalness. There. Lecture over, but it needed to be said.

I can do without my cell phone, didn't have one for years and when I finally broke down and got one it was for my convenience and safety. My kids have the number but I don't give it out to others.

My DH kept trying for me to get one when I was working for the health dept. and spent a lot to time on the road but I kept putting it off as I didn't want to get tied into a contract or pay their high prices.

I managed to always find a phone someway when I was out and having troubles. I finally broke down several years ago and got a Tracfone and rarely use it. About the only time it rings is when I'm on the computer and one of our kids is trying to contact us.

Now the computer I have to have. lol. DH is always asking questions about something and I look up the answers for him, look up knitting and crocheting patterns and just lots of things to take up my time. Hey, I'm retired I can do as I darn well please now.

Don't have a cell phone, don't want one.

Obviously, it is nice to have in case of emergency, but seriously, very few things that happen are real emergencies. I've made it all these years so far and the only emergency happened while I was at home in bed and had to call my DD to take me to the hospital in the night. Used my bedside phone.

Recently I was asked which I would keep if I had to give up either my PC or the TV. The TV would be gone in a heartbeat. And it may come to that if TV continues to spew out more trash like they are doing now.

But that's just me. :>)

Here are the facts..................

An unactivated phone WILL call 911 in the US. I checked and it looks like that is the policy in Canada also. You may want to double check and verify.

Also make sure you do not have one of the very old analog phones as they will not function for 911.

Per FCC rules:

If a provider declines to reactivate a handset that is not location-capable, the FCC requires the provider to still deliver a 911 call from that handset to the appropriate PSAP.

I gave my parents an old unactivated phone and car charger for their use in case of emergencies. As long as they keep it on the charger so that it works it will dial 911.

This is a good time to remind people to consider creating a contact in your wireless phones memory with the name "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) listing the phone numbers of people you want to be notified if there is an emergency. This can help one not only in an emergency if you are unconscious but also useful for contacting the owner of a lost phone.

I love both my cell phone and and computer. I seldom use the home phone for calls coming and going. I only pay $10 a month for my cell phone with one of the kid's plan. I probably use my cell phone 6 to 8 times a day maybe more. But for a week I would give it up and keep my computer. If I didn't need my home phone for my computer, I would give up my home phone.

No cell,have one,hardly use it,do take it with me when i go out.I was out and about one time and finished my errands sooner than i thought i would.Thought oh,i'll call my friend and ee if she's home and stop by~~~~~~~guess what?? I didn't have the phone with me,and couldn't find a phone booth anywhere,so i came on home,and after that i made sre i take it with me.I don't go out alot anymore~~~~~my choice,so it doesn't get a lot of use.
My computor,that's another story,have to have it.

I have never had a cell phone.

the only time I use the phone is to phone for appointments here and there and the odd reservation to a restaurant.

and yes, the times when my computer was gone I freaked out, missed it too much.

I can do without my cell phone but not my computer. Being that I work from home, I rarely use my cell anyway. But, I'm on the computer all the time doing research, work, etc.

Besides, if I call someone, I use my home phone anyway.

My Iphone is a computer, well almost. I do about 90% of all my Internet activities from my phone. I'm on it now. If I still had my generic Motorola, I'd say get rid of the phone. But now...? Hard to answer.

Computer. I can get download the web on my cell phone if I really need to but I don't make calls on my computer.

It would be hard, but I'd give up the computer. I wouldn't want to be without a phone, and we gave up landlines years ago.

I do have a Windows Mobile smartphone and use it for web access, so I wouldn't be without the internet. It would just be a bit slower than on my computer.

I would have to buy a cell phone so I would have one to give up. Does that answer your question?

I checked and double checked and yes, deactivated phones must provide 911 service in Canada but.............from what I have read some of the remote areas in Canada that are sparsely populated do not have 911 service at all. Make sure you are covered by checking with your local government to know if 911 service is in your area.

Having a deactivated phone handy for 911 emergencies is both frugal and smart. Make sure the battery stays charged or it will not work. And speaking of batteries..........make sure your flashlight batteries stay charged for emergencies. Everyone should have a flashlight in their auto and one on each floor of their home. I have kicked myself for not doing this, finding dead flashlights or flashlights with leaking batteries during a power outage.

Definitely the cell phone. I don't even know half the things it does. I've had one since 1998 but this new one has too many features and i don't use it. With Verizon FIOS I can call anywhere in the country free, calls I used to use the cell for. I'm on the computer many different times all day.

The cell phone can go. Not as likely to let go of the computer.
