Before and after pictures of my old house

Hello all,

I want to thank you all for your advice, and share some pictures of my old house. I finally shot AFTER pictures, 2 years after my renovation work began. They are on my flickr site:

Your bathroom absolutely wonderful! I have a small bathroom too (6x6) and it is setup just like your old one. I wish i could talk my family in to giveing up the tub for a corner shower like that. Any chance of posting a few more of the bathroom?

Its such a small bathroom that wide angle is all I could get! A cast iron tub (the kind with the iron "skirt") took up a full half of the space, leaving very little room for a sink and toilet. It was fun to remove that 800 pound tub. Yeah, that corner shower really opened up the space, but please don;t use the pre-fab plastic enclosure, though, cause tile is much nicer!

I agree with oakleyok regarding the window treatment. Is there anything you can do to completely cover the white that shows along the top and both sides of the windows? Perhaps panels that hang straight down on the ends and a valance that goes across the whole top of the window.

I love the new wall color--it definitely warms up the space! I also think the picture looks much better lowered--less like it's "floating in space." However, because the picture is small in relation to the wall above your sofa, I think you could improve that space even more if you put something on either side of the picture, such as wall sconces with candles, dried floral arrangements (similar to the one you had to the right of the picture originally), some pretty plates on sconces, etc. Also, the pillows are very pretty, but to me, they have an "elegant" look with their silkiness that clashes with the more "country" look you have going with your nice plaid sofa, oak end table, etc. Some textured pillows in the same color would look great, especially with a nubby throw over one side of the sofa. That would just say warmth and would be so cozy, just right for fall. You have a great start.

Thank you all for your comments! It was a 5 year complete down-to-studs home renovation of an old 80's house of redwood walls. We've turned it into an Italian lake villa. So happy it's finished and very pleased how it turned out.

Nice turn around, wombat. Great growing. Studied up, paid attention and followed the advice of the more experienced & knowledgeable contributors on this forum. It can be difficult to tell them from the wannabes sometimes. Congrats on the successful navigation. Your plants are lovely.

I love your bathroom, too. We're in the same boat with a tiny one, 5 1/2 x 6 but our window is in the middle of the wall, above the tub. 2009 is going to be our bathroom remodel year and I've already planted the seed in DH's head about moving the window to the corner of the room so that we can have a stand up shower. Question for you salami - do you have a tub anywhere in your house and did not having a tub/resale enter your thoughts when deciding what to do in your remodel? Your house is great!

I don't think NOT having a tub affects resale, when you replace it with a quality shower enclosure. In my house I wasn't too worried about that because there is a second bathroom with a clawfoot tub. Good luck with your bathroom project.

You just certainly have to feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment. That is a really first class renovation and the end results look as if you put more than a little thought into appearance and function.

I love to read about people who have the ability to dream and use their imaginations to salvage and preserve precious history, and homes are one item our society has been pretty heartless about. I'd be very proud to live in a home like that. It's just lovely.

Love, love, love what you've done!! Congratulations! Would you mind sharing with me what kind and color paint you used on your hot water radiators? Is it a special paint for radiators?

Its just plain old Rustoleum, gloss black. Each radiator took about an hour of steel wool/brush cleaning, and then mask REALLY well because the overspray goes farther than you think!
