Sounds like you may be similar or a bit cooler than "my" zone 5. I've successfully grown cowpeas. Southerners may laugh, but starting indoors on a heat mat in the north and then setting them out at the time that it's warm enough for melons will give you added assurance that the crop will mature. Maybe not a good option for a big planting, but it works well for my small row. Also, if you have any microclimates with more heat, use them for your cowpeas. An area along a south facing dark wall gives me a hotter area that bakes some plants during the summmer, but cowpeas thrive in those conditions.

There are a couple of people on the bean and legume forum who have successfully used a shelling machine. Also, some who shell by hand. Ask there and you probably will get some help. I shell by hand, but I don't have a large quantity and have no special method. Jim

Great Question - two reasons really. #1 - Aesthetically there are no other curved lines on the entire front elevation and we were attempting to keep with that theme and remove any radius from a curved copper radius. #2 - Neither my wife nor I are big fans of the color of copper when it's new (for this application) or when it ages and creates a new patina (you can't really control the color nor the end product appearance) so we'd rather go with a spot-on color match to the windows/flashing/gutters, etc. because over time the color scheme of the front house stays just like it was when we first build it. In the ones you want to use for shells, let the pods fill out with lumps (peas) fully formed inside. The ones you use for snap peas should be about 6 to 8 inches long max. with smooth sides. I usually allow the peas to fully form and use those for shell and pick the others at the same time that are about half grown and use those for snaps. Mix about 90% shells and 10%snaps. They freeze well, no need to blanch. Just put in a ziplock bag and freeze. If using for shells, they should zip on one side and should come out without a milky film. It the film is still present and the peas do not come out easily, you picked a little too early. If using them for snap beans you might be able to get a crop for harvest. It would be cutting it close. If they do not make it they will still help improve the soil as long as they are inoculated. I like purple hull peas better than blackeye peas. They have a better flavor and are pretty productive as well.

Glenda....that is a doozy!!! I don't know how it happened, but think of a clever made-up response if some one asks. LOL
I had company visiting once, I had to go to work, so was trying to quickly fix lunch for them before I left. I was reaching up in the cupboard for the jar of ice tea and accedentally knocked a jar of P.butter off the shelf. It hit me just over my eye and I saw stars for a few seconds, but I finished getting lunch made and went off to my job in a clothing store in the mall. I couldn't figure out why people were lookin gat me sort of strange, when I was closing the store and was checking the fitting rooms and happened to look in the mirror. To my horror, there I was with a doozy of a shiner. People didn't want to believe about the jar of P.butter, so I said my husband hit me, but they should see his eyes. LOL Hope you heal up real fast. One thing I discovered is, make-up doesnt cover a black eye very well. Dottie

What you see is a poorly done makeup job!

Lol, pb butter. THERE IS NONE OF THAT STUFF IN MY PLACE OR TRUNK OF CAR!

Maybe my FIVE new boyfriends did it!

Just think I rubbed my eye too hard as it was itching, last nite. Yeah!

arnica cream

that's what you need--it's amazing at "erasing" bruises.

I found it at my local drug store, in the "first-aid ointment" section. Or you can get it at a health-food store.

"Arnica Cream is a non-greasy cream with a smooth texture. This cream is great for masaging sore muscles. Arnica Cream is also suitable for use on the face. Arnica montana is used for trauma, discoloration from bruises, falls, blows, overexertion as well as stiffness due to minor injuries."

I was going to suggest the arnica also. DD swears by it. You will probably need to go the the health food store for it.

Seriously. It looks like a spontaneous rupture to me. Are you taking any medication that may thin your blood? Anticoagulants,aspirin,high doses of some vitamins or even natural things like ginko or garlic tabs can act as blood thinners.
