The LaPerm cat breed is "low maintenance", requiring minimum grooming because the coat does not easily mat. LaPerms' curls hold the hair, much like that of the Poodle, so shedding is minimal. Bath and towel drying is all that is required to maintain the curl. Blow drying tends to make the hair frizz. After the coat is totally dry, spritzing with a fine mist of plain water works well to achieve even more curl.

I'm not familiar with that breed, but here's a site that breeds cats that are supposed to be non-allergetic. I know nothing about them, other than they advertise all the time on the radio.

I would mention, though, that your son needs to consider the fact that if he gets a cat, even one his fiancee can tolerate, it's possible that his brother may never be able to come to visit. I, too, have a brother who is extremely allergic to cats. I cannot ever host a holiday family dinner at my house, he can't come to visit or even help us move furniture--at the risk of having an asthma attack because I have cats. It's something to consider, that young people don't always think through.

Hope he finds a solution that will work for all.

I was going to suggest a hairless cat then I read this.

"Contrary to what some people believe, Sphynxes are not hypoallergenic. These cats still produce the protein to which allergic people react and shed it in their saliva and dander. The lack of hair may help to reduce the reaction in some people, but others are just as allergic to Sphynxes as to other cats."

Yes, it's not a cat's fur that's the allergen, but their dried saliva. And I'm assuming all cats have saliva.

There's a product sold for people who are allergic to their pets. It's a spray.......I think it's called Allerpet. One for dogs and one for cats. I don't know anything about it, though.

Oh, and I meant to say cat allergy is a rather individual thing. I can bury my face in my black cats' fur, and my orange cat when I had one, and ditto our black & white cats and a Siamese. But I tend to be somewhat allergic to grey cats, and more strongly allergic to grey tabbies. I'm sure other people have different reactions to different types.

vi, I'll pass on to my son that they are not hypoallergenic, but that they do shed less. I think his fiancee will have to determine if it is the hair, saliva or dander that caused her problems. I will let him know that you said your experience with them is that they do indeed have very nice personalities.

A friend of mine wants a pet so badly but her lifestyle says no to dogs and her severe allergies say no to cats. She has spent weekends with her niece who has a Siberian and is now testing things out by borrowing hers for a few weeks. Things are going well so far. She is severely allergic, meaning hospital visit unable to breath allergic to my boys.

Truly Violet..where would one find a breeder for the LaPerm?
