I wonder if it had the clear noodles? Theya are thin. Maybe was it Vietnamese soup? I get a soup from the local Vietnamese restaurant which has shrimp, crab--then veggies are added at the last minute (lettuce, bean srpouts, green onions, some peppers). It's my comfort food.

Anyway, be flattered that he thinks you can just reproduce anything he can remember!

Could he be thinking of yaki soba? I know that probably isn't spelled right. When I lived in Okinawa I was just crazy about it. It's noodles with very little broth and I don't know what else, but it was delicious.

I love Asian soups! Our Thai restaurant makes yummy soups. I love the plain broth soup you get at Japanese restaurants. Mmmmmm

In the 1950s my grandfather was constantly telling my grandmother how fabulous his mother's suet pudding had been and complained that she never made it for him. Finally one day he gave her the recipe and she made it. Well, of course he hated it - and couldn't imagine he had ever liked it. According to his brother it tasted just their like Mom's had. Good luck with the soup.

A good friend of ouors loved pineapple upside down cake, so his wife, when a new bride, made one. He told her it was "almost as good" as his mother's. Guess who never got any pineapple upside down cake ever again in his married life. She forgave him, but never forgot.
Pattico, don't bother with the soup. If he hasn't thought about it in 50 years, it ain't that important, and it's likely he'll forget about it in a day or two.

The nation of Formosa is now called Tiawan. (sp?)

Tom was over in Formosa about the same time. I think it was the USS Bradford that he was on. I didn't know him yet at that time. DH keeps remembering the wonderful "favorite" foods he had back then too. I wonder if that was the first time he was out on his own, so everything was GREAT. I swear he must be the only one from the Navy who braggs about the great food! It makes me wonder about my own cooking ability.

heyjud...Denny always says the Navy feeds their guys better than any other branch of the service. He went from 120 to 180 while he was in the Navy...(yes he was a scrawny little runt when he went in...I didn't know him then either but I've seen pictures...)

There is a very different take around here about the Navy guys Patti...LOL (I live in a town with a Navy Base.) The guys around here get fatter..because they are lazy...so says the Few Marines, Army and Air Force guys also attached to this base...Quite frankly as soon as they make Chief ...there bellies swell...LOL But many of my friends husbands come back off a ship deployment having lost weight...there is nothing to do but work out....within a month or so of returning home they are back to their "comfy" weight..

Um he could actually be thinking of an Egg Drop soup..when done right..the egg does appear to be thin noodles...and it's basically a chicken broth.

What he ended up buying...chicken broth, chives, garlic, angel hair speg. and parsley.

What it tasted like was Weight Watchers ....lol...or kind of like egg drop soup ....I made mine with bouillon and he used canned chicken broth...which I don't like. I made him taste mine to see who's was best...mine was.

He said it wasn't what he remembered.

I said yeah...I'm not what you remembered 45 years ago either...lol

I'm still trying to find Popovers just like his Mother used to make. Only Mama died in 2005. and her daughters "have no idea". Grrr....

Patti, you are so funny, I'm in that age group too, 63, and everything happened so long ago.
I made egg drop soup with Liptons chicken broth soup mix, drizzling egg and flour mixture in. Still not the real thing.
