today is a can't live with em day....

Denny wants me to make him some soup like he had in China...he thinks or was it Formosa...hummm or could it be Japan...he's not sure...

It was about 50 years ago...all he can remember that was in it was a very light chicken broth and real thin noodles...

That's it...that's all he can remember...He just called from the store...waiting for me to tell him the ingredients...that I was supposed to look up online...

I've got to go sit down and make a list of his tributes...so I can equal out this day....lol

Hehehe. What I love most about this story is the utter confidence he has in your ability to pull this off. He sounds like a keeper to me.

Maybe you could send him to the book store to look for a cookbook with the recipe in it. That should keep him busy. :+)

A lot of the fear of this is just cultural. I'm sure our ancestors prior to the discovery of the first pesticides, arsenic compounds in the 19th century, ate a LOT of wormy fruit, either directly or indirectly in processed form, and didn't give it much second thought. And, I'm sure that in many poor countries around the world, it's still the norm, not the exception, to have to eat things untreated with pesticides. Most of those people no doubt also just "eat around" the parts that are too damaged to be edible. They probably turn the bad stuff into food indirectly by feeding it to chickens, pigs, goats, or whatever which then provides a human food source. And, of course, there are many cultures around the world that directly eat and enjoy insects. Aborigines in Australia ate many, many kinds of insects. In Thailand, giant water bugs, dipped in batter and deep fried, are a gourmet delicacy and are becoming very expensive, the supply being limited due to overharvesting, pesticide runoff, etc. I also recently saw an episode of Rick Bayliss' PBS series 'Mexico One Plate at a Time' where he was in a very exclusive restaurant in Mexico city that was serving fried grasshoppers. Really, any time you eat most commercially processed foods of plant origin, such as breads, juices, etc., you are getting trace amounts of insect proteins. The federal government sets allowable levels of insect matter in all kinds of foodstuffs. "Zero" just isn't realistically attainable in a cost-effective way. Here is a link to an FDA publication which shows the allowable level of contamination of various types of things in certain foods. Some of it may be higher than many people know -- for example, 4% of cocoa beans can be infested and still be sold in the US food trade. Canned tomatoes can have no more than 2 fruit fly larvae per 500 gram (slightly larger than a pound) can. Ground nutmeg can have no more than 100 insect fragments per 10 grams. I wasn't much enamoured with singles but i planted dainty bess, goldenwings, sparrieshoop together on a whim. I have 3 db,1 sparrieshoop, 3 goldenwings(one was mistake). now i couldn't b without them. db is the only ht i have (is she really a ht?) that has eliminated any predjudice i had before. i am thinking about getting white wings which is a sport of db, not golden wings. they have done rather well in all the heat and humidity here.

I like annuals, but they don't like me :-( I don't know why, but I always have trouble raising annuals from seed - even those which are supposed to be super easy, like cosmos and zinnias. At the moment, I have zinnia seedlings sitting in the garden and doing nothing. As for cosmos, from the seeds I sowed, I see only two minute seedlings that look as if they are embarrassed... Snaps didn't even bother coming up. The plantings around them are happy enough, so I don't think the problem is lack of soil fertility. I do believe the issue is soil hardiness, as I garden in clay. I also find that our extremely hot dry Summers do annuals quickly in. I have never been able to grow lobelia, even if I start with a nursery pot. There are some annuals that do well for me, though, if they are kept in shade - begonias and impatiens, especially, but I buy these from the garden centre. My major success from seed is sweet allyssum and I have small clumps growing in different areas of the garden. Over the last couple of years, due to our seed swap, I have also grown poppies and they have done well. Petunias are iffy for me. Some will do very well and perform for months on end, others will simply linger there, look unhappy, shrivel and die. Go figure. I also notice that they require a high regular amount of fertilizer in order to perform well. All in all, I would not base a garden around them, or depend heavily on them for looks, but I do enjoy the burst of color annuals provide in a garden. Eduarda

I am about to compost my Pineapple Upsidedown Cake. Every spring it gets bigger and bigger and shows all kinds of promiss, the it just seems to go limp. By the end of June it looks like it should be September if I gaged the seasons on PUSDC. Besides, even using its acronym it has more letters than June. I will be a defender of Ginko Craig. I have told this story in this forum often. So I will make it short. You can take GC, cut it up into single eye divisions and pot them, plant them the next spring, and the next year have a very nice compact variegated green with white margin, medium-small hosta that flowers profusely. How can one hate a hosta like that. I moved just one of about 50 I had propogated from 5 fall sale purchases I had in Arkansas to IL and it is lovely and maintains itself very nicely. Les

I wonder if it had the clear noodles? Theya are thin. Maybe was it Vietnamese soup? I get a soup from the local Vietnamese restaurant which has shrimp, crab--then veggies are added at the last minute (lettuce, bean srpouts, green onions, some peppers). It's my comfort food.

Anyway, be flattered that he thinks you can just reproduce anything he can remember!

I heard a saying like your title once: Husbands: can't live with them, can't shoot 'em!!

Oh well, what can we do? They probably say the same about us behind our backs (even tho' we're perfect!).

Could he be thinking of yaki soba? I know that probably isn't spelled right. When I lived in Okinawa I was just crazy about it. It's noodles with very little broth and I don't know what else, but it was delicious.

In the 1950s my grandfather was constantly telling my grandmother how fabulous his mother's suet pudding had been and complained that she never made it for him. Finally one day he gave her the recipe and she made it. Well, of course he hated it - and couldn't imagine he had ever liked it. According to his brother it tasted just their like Mom's had. Good luck with the soup.

A good friend of ouors loved pineapple upside down cake, so his wife, when a new bride, made one. He told her it was "almost as good" as his mother's. Guess who never got any pineapple upside down cake ever again in his married life. She forgave him, but never forgot.
Pattico, don't bother with the soup. If he hasn't thought about it in 50 years, it ain't that important, and it's likely he'll forget about it in a day or two.

The nation of Formosa is now called Tiawan. (sp?)

Tom was over in Formosa about the same time. I think it was the USS Bradford that he was on. I didn't know him yet at that time. DH keeps remembering the wonderful "favorite" foods he had back then too. I wonder if that was the first time he was out on his own, so everything was GREAT. I swear he must be the only one from the Navy who braggs about the great food! It makes me wonder about my own cooking ability.

That's sweet, he thinks that you can do anything!

heyjud...Denny always says the Navy feeds their guys better than any other branch of the service. He went from 120 to 180 while he was in the Navy...(yes he was a scrawny little runt when he went in...I didn't know him then either but I've seen pictures...)

There is a very different take around here about the Navy guys Patti...LOL (I live in a town with a Navy Base.) The guys around here get fatter..because they are lazy...so says the Few Marines, Army and Air Force guys also attached to this base...Quite frankly as soon as they make Chief ...there bellies swell...LOL But many of my friends husbands come back off a ship deployment having lost weight...there is nothing to do but work out....within a month or so of returning home they are back to their "comfy" weight..

Um he could actually be thinking of an Egg Drop soup..when done right..the egg does appear to be thin noodles...and it's basically a chicken broth.

What he ended up buying...chicken broth, chives, garlic, angel hair speg. and parsley.

What it tasted like was Weight Watchers ....lol...or kind of like egg drop soup ....I made mine with bouillon and he used canned chicken broth...which I don't like. I made him taste mine to see who's was best...mine was.

He said it wasn't what he remembered.

I said yeah...I'm not what you remembered 45 years ago either...lol

I'm still trying to find Popovers just like his Mother used to make. Only Mama died in 2005. and her daughters "have no idea". Grrr....

Patti, you are so funny, I'm in that age group too, 63, and everything happened so long ago.
I made egg drop soup with Liptons chicken broth soup mix, drizzling egg and flour mixture in. Still not the real thing.
